Netflix's Jessica Jones And Punisher Canceled, But Marvel Gives Fans Hope For Return

"To be continued...!"

Netflix's Jessica Jones and Punisher series' have been canceled. Deadline reports that Season 3 of Jessica Jones will still air on the streaming service, but it will mark the end of her run. The Punisher, meanwhile, will not return, having had Season 2 release on Netflix in January 2019.

This seemingly brings Marvel and Netflix's relationship as it pertains to creating new shows to an end. The streaming service has already called time on its Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist shows, which means The Defenders are no more. Netflix has indicated that the shows will remain on Netflix for subscribers to watch, however.

Now Playing: Netflix's The Punisher And Jessica Jones Canceled, But Marvel Gives Fans Hope For Return - GameSpot Universe News Update

"Marvel's The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix," reads a statement issued to Deadline. "Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.

"In reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel's Jessica Jones. We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter, and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others."

Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb has also released a statement, saying that the company was thrilled by the stories it told with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Punisher. He went on to reflect on the achievement of bringing together the characters and talked up the talent that contributed to doing so.

"Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes. Take a moment and go online and look at the dazzling list of actors, writers, directors, and musicians who graced us with the very best of their craft. We loved each and every minute of it. And we did it all for you--the fans--who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it."

Interestingly, his statement also indicated that it was Netflix's decision to drop the shows, and suggested that Marvel isn't done with the characters. "Our network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters ... but you know Marvel better than that," he teased. "As Matthew Murdock's Dad once said, 'The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it's how he gets back up.' To be continued...!"

Of course, Marvel is owned by Disney and it has been speculated that these characters could have a future on Disney's own streaming service, which is called Disney+. The service will be home to Season 7 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and another new live-action Star Wars series called The Mandalorian. Disney has also confirmed TV shows based on "beloved superheroes" that may not have had their own spotlight on the big screen. One of these is a show based on fan-favorite character Loki.

Disney's Kevin Mayer, the chairman in charge of direct-to-consumer offers, previously said that migrating Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Punisher is a possibility.

@Sepewrath: Disney can't force anything and this is the thing you guys clearly don't seem to understand. If Disney can forcefully retake production rights, how come they can't make X-Men movies? How come they couldn't use Spider-Man, a Marvel property, in earlier Avengers movies? How come they can't make a HULK movie, but HULK can appear in their movies?

The answer: they don't have the rights for those properties. Fox owns the rights for X-Men (which is probably why Disney bought Fox; gives them access to a second superhero universe to work with). Sony owns the rights for Spider-Man movies, but they worked out a deal with Marvel so that they can use him. Universal owns the movie rights to the HULK, but Marvel owns the HULK itself, so they can use him in whatever they want, they just can't make a movie called "The HULK", or specifically about, the HULK.

The same scenario is likely true here. Netflix owns the television rights for the Defenders. They can do whatever they want until those rights expire for whatever reason. They stated the shows were very costly to produce. They stated viewership was way down. Marvel complained about working with them. Recipe for cancellation using actual facts? Sounds good to me.

@Barighm: Actually they cant do whatever they want. Its just like license video games, the owner of the license plays a large role in development because at the end of the day they retain the final say on what you can and cant do with their properties. All Disney had to do to get Marvel shows off Netflix before the license expired, was say no to every idea Netflix came up with, ultimately leaving them with two choices: keep paying the creative staff to produce something you now know Disney will never let see the light of day or cancel it.

@Barighm: You've taken what is likely a several hundred page contract for each of these things and attempted to reduce them to 2 pages by assuming it's merely a matter of one company having bought rights from the other and that's the end of it. There are so many contingencies, discretionary rights, conditions, triggered clauses and nuances in these things that they look like a couple of textbooks...each.

@Barighm: Both Jessica Jones and The Punisher are produced through some form of Marvel, and ABC (Disney owned)production companies. Netflix is not a production company on Jessica Jones or The Punisher, they are purely the distributors.

The deals made for Spider-Man, X-Men etc. with Sony and 20th Century Fox were pre-Disney buyout, and Marvel were foolish enough to sell the movie rights to the characters pretty much outright. The only way they could get the character rights back are for Fox (not anymore) or Sony decide to quit making films. That's how they got the rights to Daredevil back, and why Fox fast tracked the abysmal Fantastic Four movie. It's a similar situation to what Disney faced with Star Wars, when the bought Lucasfilm film, they owned episodes 1-3 and 5-6, but not 4. Because George Lucas had sold the rights to episode 4 to 20th Century Fox, while being smart enough to retain sequel rights. Even then the distribution rights to the films they now own remain with Fox until 2020. Unfortunately for Disney/Marvel they didn't have the same foresight when they sold their character rights to 20th Century Fox and Sony.

@Barighm: yep, this is the same reason Syfy dropped the expanse last year

these kind of programmes are very expensive to make due to the royalties/Ip rights, this is why netflix has been doubling down on its own original series

60% owned by Disney and not limited to Disney's PG 13+, so Disney+ might be more like (pure speculationon my part) about extra content, behind the scene's maybe and/or acces to premium series/movies or maybe the difference in how many times one can watch a serie/movie. As said I feel Hulu might play a big part of what will happen to many of the DC/Marvel/Netflix series.

@reklawm: Disney+ has been confirmed to be "family friendly" meaning the more grim Defenders style characters and stories won't be on it. However Disney owns 20% of Hulu, and FOX owns 40% of Hulu, so once FOX is bought by Disney, 60% will be owned by Disney... so it's been theorized that Hulu will be the location where Disney puts it's less family friendly series... and it appears like all the Netflix series will be migrated to Hulu, or at least that appears to be the hopes of everyone involved.

Sad as I loved "The Punisher!" I also really enjoyed the "Daredevil" show. I dunno what to like as anymore anything I dig gets canceled! I still do not believe the numbers as everyone I talked to loved these shows.

@Barzenak42: Don't be too sad just yet, Punisher and Daredevil, along with Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders, are all very likely to make their debut on the soon to be Disney owned Hulu. The facts are all of the Marvel Netflix shows did very well (even though people criticized Iron Fist and Luke Cage, as a whole they did very well in ratings and viewership counts) they however were very expensive to make since they had to pay large royalties to Disney for use of their characters... it will actually be considerably cheaper for Hulu to make episodes of those shows since they won't have to pay royalties to themselves as they already own the characters. Because of this it's unlikely Hulu wouldn't pick up all these amazing shows.

This may be a blessing in disguise Jessica Jones first season was great but second season sucked I couldn't even finish watching all of it. Same goes for the second season of the Punisher It's not as bad but still I'm finding it boring. For me I'm done with Marvel and superhero series and movies they are played out. Hopefully Netflix can create some better series or at least put money into releasing better third party movies.

@warmblur: Sorry to say it but luckily you're in the minority when it comes to that opinion. While season 2 of Jessica Jones wasn't as good as the groundbreaking season 1 was, it was still a well liked. As for Punisher, season 2 is widely considered to be superior to season 1 by the masses, not sure why you didn't like it but most did... and now that Netflix has cancelled all of the Marvel series, Disney is going to be free to pick up all the shows and put them on, the soon to be Disney owned, Hulu.

Here are the facts. Marvel Studios and Marvel Television don’t get along. Don’t believe me? Do some research.

Basically, Netflix owns these versions of the characters. The whole “we’ll see, it’s possible” b.s. is just that: b.s. There will not be any continuations on Hulu, that’s just wishful thinking. I assure you everyone involved in these shows have already moved on to other things.

The future is Disney+. Hopefully, Marvel Studios can reboot these characters either for Disney+ or the big screen. And, hopefully, Jeph Loeb can go back to writing comics for DC, since that’s what he’s best at. Everything he’s done for Marvel has been absolutely horrendous.

@bat725: Almost none of what you said is remotely true. Netflix cancelled the series, they're now free for any network to pick up willing to pay Marvel for the character rights, you should probably do research on what a network cancelling a series is compared to a network letting a show end... cancellation means the network has 0 rights over the property anymore unless the characters were original creations of the network... since these are Marvel characters, Netflix doesn't own any of them, meaning since Netflix cancelled all their series, they've lost all rights to those characters.

Hulu, which will soon be 60% owned by Disney, is almost guaranteed to pick up all the Marvel Netflix series. All the series, despite a few loud whining children about Iron Fist and Luke Cage, did very well... and the main reason they were cancelled is because, as Netflix has reported multiple times, those shows are very expensive to make since they have to pay massive royalties to Marvel/Disney for the use of their characters... guess what? A Disney own service, ie Hulu, doesn't have to pay that royalty... meaning Hulu can pick up these successful series, and produce them at a considerably cheaper price than Netflix could. Something that everyone involved is hoping gets done.

Also just so you know, Disney already announced and confirmed that Disney+ will be Family friendly content ONLY... they will almost guaranteed be using Hulu for their non-family oriented movies and series. So the future of most of the non-cartoon Marvel series, will be on Hulu, not Disney+.

@CaoSong: Netflix owns the seasons they produced. That’s why they assured viewers these episodes will be on Netflix “for many years to come.”

You really think Disney will continue producing rated R content for Marvel characters? You’re pretty naive.

Either way, I’m good, because, yeah, those shows sucked. Daredevil season one was awesome with a steep decline in quality with every season after. The ratings don’t lie. They dropped...badly.

But, hey, if you have time for bad television, more power to you. For me, it’s Marvel Studios or bust.

@Terminator95: What Netflix should do is make a more longer lasting partnership with DC and get more of those stories going. Titan's (not a Netlfix exclusive) Was an awesome example of what they can do given a more freeing platform. I want to see more of that.

@WingChopMasta: Flaw in your logic is... Titan's as a whole isn't very well liked. If Titans is your example, Netflix won't be impressed. On top of that I feel I must remind people that Netflix in 2017 bought Millarworld, the comic publisher behind Kingsman, Hit-Girl, Kick-Ass, and Wanted. And they have series planned already for American Jesus and Jupiter's Legacy as well as movies planned for Huck, Empress, Reborn, Prodigy, and Sharkey the Bounty Hunter. Netflix is trying to build up their own characters rather than having to pay royalties to a different company to use their characters.

Not only that, DC has their own streaming series, they wouldn't want their new content to come out on Netflix, a rival service.

@CaoSong: Actually everywhere but in the US the DC universe shows like Titans and future seasons of Young Justice, Doom Patrol etc. are on Netflix since the streaming service is only available in the US...so they already must have some kind of partnership going

You are of course right that Netflix is focussing way more on their own shows and movies...don't know what that means for future collaborations with DC and if they are going to keep putting out DC shows should their streaming service ever be released worldwide

@rodoxthedark: Or because of the reason Netflix gave: viewership decreased by 60 to 70% for all of the shows. That's an enormous loss. Maybe Disney said "with those numbers this ain't worth doing" but Netflix is like the Walmart of the streaming world, so I can see the decision being entirely theirs.

@Sepewrath: Choosing to stop the production of a collection of very costly shows for a rapidly declining viewer base is an...excuse? Buddy, that's just business common sense, and the simplest explanation is most often the right one.

It's much more likely Disney offered to buy the license back and Netflix, who complained about the cost of the shows, decided to accept the offer.

Ship Netflix is starting to lisp. Their terrible "Original" movies and constant loss of content from people pulling their IP's to make their own streaming service is starting to show. I'll give it maybe 6 months before I cancel it. Can't remember the last time I even watched it. Once I wean my daughter off of it, it's gone.

Punisher... Hell NO! Best of the Marvels shows with DD coming in a close 2nd

Anyways we all know this was coming, damn shame for punisher... If (and a big IF) Disney decide to bring back punisher...or any of the netflixs Marvel shows, one things for sure... DON'T REMOVE THE MA+ content (ESPECIALLY.... ESPECIALLY FOR THE PUNISHER) and bring my boi Jon back to reprise his role... DEFINTELY the best punisher to date, and the dude that plays DD, is hands down better than Ben Affleck... Poor Benny just can't catch a break lol.

@foghorn79: That's not true. They will continue to produce it on Hulu. Disney made the bold move stating Disney+, their streaming service, will be family friendly content only... however with all the acquisitions Disney has made the last few years, they own a LOT of popular characters and stories that just aren't family friendly, they will want to keep those successful properties going, and since Disney will soon own 60% of Hulu, they will almost certainly start using Hulu as their more mature streaming service. This allows them to keep Disney+ family friendly while also not losing revenue from their more adult properties.

@Barighm: I mean, its totally a coincidence that all of those shows suddenly disappeared right around when disney got their hands on marvel and announced their stream service.

Maybe you are right but im not so sure that viewership drop is the only reason. Shows are often inconsistent and last i heard punisher lost less viewers with S2 compared to the others . You don't just cancel like 5 shows one after another.

@uchihasilver: They cancelled them because viewership decreased from season to season by upwards of 70%. That's a major loss.

@Barighm: If that is what you believe, Disney owns the license and they pulled it so they can put it on thier Marvel channel. Netflix had no choice but too pull them. Disney is behind this and I do not them anyway.

@lonewolf1044: You don't know how production rights work.

Netflix owns the television/streaming/whatever rights for the Defenders. Disney/Marvel owns the IP, but Netflix got the license to create shows based on those characters. If they wanted to keep creating more shows, than they had the right to. The fact is Netflix has been complaining about the cost of the shows for a while now, and given the size of the viewership drop, and Disney likely increasing the price to license the shows, it's not hard to imagine Netflix deciding the rate of decline was not worth the additional cost (especially with Marvel complaining about their working relationship). Disney probably offered to buy the rights back and Netflix was all over it.

@Barighm:Notice you said Netflix got the license to create the shows however it is an license that can be revoked or brought out for the duration of the license if there was such an deal. Netflix yes can create more shows as long as they hold an license but once an license is pulled it is no longer the case. It like an RN that holds an license to practice nursing care in one state and if that Nurse gets her license revoked she can no longer practice nursing care. See the key word is license and Marvel/Disney does not need one as they are the parent company. But Netflix does require an license to use Marvel/Disney characters. Just like EA has an license to produce Star Wars games as long as that license is in play.
