New 3DS XL Review

Now you're playing with power.

Nintendo's always given people choices when it comes to handhelds, so it comes as no surprise to see new 3DS models on the horizon. Yet, the introduction of Nintendo's New 3DS and New 3DS XL feels different, probably because it's more than just a new form factor, or a stripped down value version. The new models have an improved processor, more buttons, and an extra camera that enhances the glasses-free 3D experience. They're practically the same size as the original 3DS and 3DS XL, but they're technically superior in every way. Where do New 3DS systems leave the old models? The answer: in their dust.

With so many improvements, the New 3DS is probably the best candidate for future 3DS customers, but what about people that have had a 3DS for years? Should they upgrade to a New 3DS and ride the portable wave with Nintendo, or, is it smarter to just accept that sometime down the road, there's a chance you'll potentially miss out on some really exciting games? The answer is easier than you think.

Super Stable 3D

Super Stable 3D made possible by the new camera above the screen.
Super Stable 3D made possible by the new camera above the screen.

For the first time since I started using a 3DS four years ago, I feel not just comfortable, but excited when using the stereoscopic 3D feature, and it's all thanks to one seemingly simple addition that makes a big difference. By installing a second camera above the New 3DS' top screen, the system detects your relative position and adjusts the 3D effect accordingly. Older 3DSs all had a fixed sweet spot, and if you weren't positioned correctly, the 3D effect would go out of focus all too easily, and more than likely, your finger would quickly put the 3D slider into the "off" position. Nintendo's camera-based solution works so well that you need to move the New 3DS into a nonsensical position to lose sight of the 3D effect. It's such a drastic improvement over previous models that once you see it in action, it's impossible to go back to the 3D of old. If you tended to turn off the 3D effect in the past because it was inconsistent and frustrating, you'll be amazed by how well the New 3DS handles the effect and how good games can look with 3D on full blast.

The New Inputs

All of the inputs from the Circle Pad Pro are built into New 3DS XL
All of the inputs from the Circle Pad Pro are built into New 3DS XL

Nintendo heard the cries years ago when it revealed the system with only a single analog stick, and made up for it in due time with the release of the Circle Pad Pro for 3DS and 3DS XL. These chunky, battery powered augmentations provided players with a second analog stick and two more shoulder buttons. It was a solution, but not a very elegant one. Thankfully, no such add-ons are needed for the New 3DS systems. There now sits two new buttons, ZL and ZR, between the standard L and R shoulder buttons, and Nintendo's crammed a small, stiff analog nub between the face buttons and the bottom screen. Though it looks uncomfortable and less flexible than the standard 3DS C-stick, it's surprisingly responsive. This addition will open the door for developers who need better camera controls in games, and give users a chance to experience what only Circle Pad Pro owners could before.

Improved Hardware

There's one reason that some future games will be exclusive to New 3DS: the improved CPU. The extra power within will allow developers to push the graphics hardware a little further without fear of bottlenecking performance. Having played Xenoblade Chronicles on New 3DS, it's not surprising that the game needs the extra oomph to run as well as it does, but realistically, it's also a modest bump in graphics compared to a game with a similar presentation, such as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. You're more likely to appreciate the effect it has on the 3DS at a system level. The operating system is snappier than before and games both download and load faster. The OS no longer feels sluggish or too demanding for the hardware. Now, it's just right.

Storage and Battery Life

Nintendo ushered in a lot of smart design decisions for New 3DS and New 3DS XL, but it's also changed a few things that aren't necessarily for the better. Up until now, 3DS stored data on SD cards, but New 3DS systems require Micro SD cards, which are much, much smaller. As a result, existing 3DS owners need to purchase a new card or settle for the included 4GB Micro SD card, which is enough to get you started but too small for long-term memory needs.

No Caption Provided

It's also much more difficult than before to access your memory card, at least for the XL model. In the past, the SD slot was readily available, but now you need to unscrew and dismantle the underside of New 3DS XLs to access the Micro SD slot. Granted, this isn't something you need to do maybe more than once or twice during the lifespan of your system, but when you do, you'll encounter stubborn screws and a panel that practically refuses to detach. It's inconvenient to say the least, but this setup allows for a great new feature: the ability to easily replace the system's internal battery. Charging, depleting, and recharging batteries can result in gradual degradation, so this will no doubt come in handy for some New 3DS owners down the road. Though New 3DS XL has only slightly better battery life than 3DS XL, roughly 30 minutes more per charge, this should also help curb the number of times you need to recharge your battery over time.

Ports, Lights, and Buttons

Apart from the additions I mentioned before, the primary 3DS controls have remained unchanged, but like the memory card slot, Nintendo remixed the layout of things such as lights, ports, and switches. Start and select are now discrete, circular buttons that live beneath the A, B, X, and Y buttons. Underneath the bottom screen, the home button sits alone. On the front of 3DS XL you'll find the game card slot, the headphone port, the stylus, and the power button, which have all been repositioned in some way. These changes are effectively harmless and inconsequential, but something's missing; the wireless radio switch that let you enable and disable Wi-Fi and Street Pass functionality without opening your 3DS. This was handy in cases where you wanted to save battery, or to make sure that you didn't miss Street Passes from other 3DS owners on your way to work or school. With New 3DSs, you need to press the home button and access the quick settings menu to turn the wireless radios on or off. It's a minor inconvenience.

Amiibo and NFC

There's a lot of buzz in the Nintendo world about Amiibo at the moment. Nintendo's NFC enabled figures are not just cute, but also functional, allowing you to carry your personal game data from one device to another. Wii U has NFC built into the GamePad, but New 3DS is the first portable from Nintendo with NFC built-in. Though Amiibo support in 3DS games is non-existent for the moment, expect that to change quickly. Nintendo's promised an external Amiibo reading add-on for existing 3DS hardware, but New 3DS owners will be ready for Amiibo right out of the box.

No Caption Provided

There's much to love about New 3DS XL's hardware, but Nintendo's made one decision that will prove to be an inconvenience for new 3DS owners: it decided not to include a charger in the box. This may have been done to cut costs, but it's going to burn uneducated customers that are picking up a 3DS for the first time if they miss the small note about the lack of an AC adapter on the box.

Like the oddly difficult back panel, the lack of an AC adapter isn't damning and shouldn't deter you from considering a New 3DS XL. With the extra controls, improved 3D, and a faster CPU, it's the most impressive 3DS to date. If you've been playing on a 3DS for years, the overall difference when you pick up a New 3DS XL is immediately apparent. After a week with the new system, I can't imagine going back.

Anyone who's picking up a 3DS for the first time should skip the other options and go right for a New 3DS or New 3DS XL, depending on what's available in their region. Picking up any other version is essentially setting yourself up for disappointment down the road when exclusive games start rolling out. If you care about Amiibo support, the choice is even easier. Existing 3DS owners should also consider an upgrade, if not now, perhaps when they're motivated by a certain game down the road. That said, if you spend a lot of time with your 3DS, but want a better experience overall, you won't be disappointed if you rush out on Feb. 13 to pick up the best handheld Nintendo's ever made.

My only issue with the New 3DS is that if you require more than 4 GB of storage for your downloads (and I do) then you will have to crack the device open in order to replace it.

I am NOT fond of that idea at all. I don't know why Nintendo designed their New 3DS this way, but it is DUMB.

<< LINK REMOVED >> New 3DS has wireless to PC backups, old 3DS doesn't. You don't "crack" it open. You take off two screws, take out sd card, put in new one..... it isnt that hard.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Considering how inexpensive a 32 GB microSD card is now (it isn't clear if Nintendo has gotten an exFAT license to support larger capacities and FAT32 above 32 GB is risky) I'd cut to the chase and install one immediately upon buying the New 3DS. You may never come close to using it all but the price is so minimal that the luxury is well worth it.

It would be nice if Nintendo simply offered a factory installed 32 GB card option.

Yes, I agree! A factory installed 32 GB card option would be great! And yes, I'll be having to install a new card on day one. I just don't like the fact that I'll have to literally open the device up to do it.

I'm an Aussie and have had a new 3ds since launch, I love it but it has a Major fault these guys missed. Your middle finger in your right hand is leaning right on the power button and when nudged the software closes instantly with no chance to resume and it doesn't save . I was playing persona q when this randomly happened you can't always be self aware especially in the heat of gaming so even now I get it ...... It's the most annoying thing ever .... You have been warned.

Other 3DS had power button right below other buttons on inside and people would accidently press sometimes. So Nintendo moved it out of the way.

I'm sorry but I also am starting to dislike nintendo. You guys need to go back to the controller and basic gaming. This motion and ipad for controller nonsense is terrible. Focus more on the gameplay than flash. This company used to have heart in their games/consoles and I feel like it's gone. I would much rather play smash bros on my n64 or gamecube that the wii u. I would much rather beat super mario brothers for the 1000th time than play mario brothers with a tablet for a controller. And for crying out loud, I just bought your 3ds, and not even a year later there's already a new one announced that I have to buy in order to play new games. I'm tired of waiting on a lost dream, but if this keeps up I think I am finished with your company and products.

If nintendo was about innovation, they wouldn't be using archaic hardware all the time, and relying on the same franchises to sell their games every year. They're serving you dead horse now, and you'll thank them for it. As for gameplay, that's a matter of opinion, I'll take a souls game over any nintendo ip, any day.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I love Dark Soul, but thats an old game. Until PS4 or Xbox One has a new Dark Soul then all they got is good old gen games that you can play on current Gen. Best ranked PS4 game was DA or Shadows of Mordor, and still neither are close to Nintendo's Top Wii U exclusives.

The next souls evolution is bloodbourne, please enjoy never playing it, due to your bias. This is a matter of perspective, I detest most nintendo games these days, but I won't tell you they s¥ck, because many other people do enjoy them, and they are good games. That's the difference between an objective person, and a raging fanboy like yourself. Now I've wasted enough time on talking to a corporate drone, enjoy having your head buried in the sand.

To each their own I suppose. I just figured I'd get a Wii U aaaannnd a PS4.

I'm not sure why people are still complaining about the tablet controller though. Personally, it feels fine to me and i enjoy playing on it while other people are watching the tv.

The wii u is a niche console. Yes there are some exclusives in that console that I really like however there is absolutely no third party support. In my country, where games are only priced at $40-$45, it is really hard to get a wii u since Nintendo continues to peg their games for almost $60 and the price never drops.

"you will never get gameplay as good as Nintendo"

I do really enjoy some Nintendo games but I have to completely disagree with this statement. I enjoy some Mario games at times, I pick up Pokemon here or there, and I have played and beat almost every Zelda game that has ever released. In spite of all that, Nintendo exclusives cannot touch the experience that I've gotten out of games like The Last of Us (my #1 game for it's single player story alone), Farcry series, or the Diablo series.

Nintendo used to have one of the best story games out there (Final Fantasy) but now that's being released for other consoles so, to be honest, Zelda is the only thing that keeps me hanging on to Nintendo. If they ever make those games non-exclusive (probably never gonna happen), I doubt I'd ever buy another Nintendo console (besides possibly their hand-helds).

Well you definitely are entitled to your opinion. I even agree with your opinion on the handheld. But you are trying to state a fact when you say "Nintendo...never lets people down." The WiiU (granted has gotten better in the past year) let a ton of people down during the first several months of release.

To add my opinion:

Besides handhelds, Nintendo hasn't had a console worthy of purchasing for core gamers since the N64. The original Wii was decent for the young and the old...but not for what I would call the "average gamer".

New Smash Bros some say best ever, New Mario Kart i say best ever, soo many awesome new innovated games. PS4 and Xbox One still have barely ANY good games yet, that is a let down. Sony sold almost 20 million copies...can you name their highest rated game? Nintendo is boss, people just dont know it yet.

So Nintendo didn't let down any of the 9 mil who own one...boy could I prove that wrong probably 10-15 times. Imagine what the stats are out of 9 mil then?

BTW...Sony's highest rated game atm is Infamous: Second Son. So how's that game of the year, Dragon Age: Inquisition going for Nintendo?...oh wait...they never got that game. That's the point. Yes, Smash Bros is kind of fun...Mario Kart is decent though I'd never buy it...Nintendo isn't a "throw away"...but they are still out matched by XB1, PS4, PC. I'd even call them strong because they can still hang in the market with these big guys....mainly because of their exclusives.

And PS4 and Xbox have several great games out now...you might've had an argument with that a year ago, but not anymore. Dragon Age, Diablo 3, Sunset Overdrive, Forza, Farcry 4, Infamous, Advanced Warfare, Final Fantasy: A Realm Reborn, heck I'd even put Destiny over most Nintendo games (except Zelda).

In comparing their "plug-in" console with their hand held console. I'd agree with you that the Wii U is a let down. I have a couple friends/relatives that have gotten it and are disappointed. I haven't picked it up yet but I can't promise that I won't when they release a new Zelda for it.

As far as the 3DS goes though...Nintendo basically has the market on portable gaming in my opinion. Sure the Vita has better hardware...but the 3DS proves that you don't have to have the best hardware to make a great console. Game selection is way more important to me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, you can always buy the pro controller, which is amazing, as far as 3ds goes, you won't need the new 3ds for 99% of future games, they won't ditch the huge userbase they have with the old model, all you won't be able to play are games that won't run on the normal model anyway, so you can simply ignore them and pretend they don't even exist, since that's what would've happened if not for the new model

I will be buying a New 3DS on launch day. I haven't had a DS or 3DS so this is very good for me. I've been wanting to play more games on the 3DS than on any other platform anyways. I was bound to get a 3DS at some point and this is the best opportunity. Hopefully, we see more Wii games come exclusive to the New 3DS

After my WiiU - I'm done with Nintendo. I barely use it and the good games are so few and far between. MK8 was a letdown for me and the only game I've actually enjoyed was Mario 3D, but it wasn't worth justifying a new console for.

Thanks for some great times Nintendo - but this is where we part ways.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Bayonetta, W101, Hyrule Warriors? Those are the best games of this generation of consoles, if you don't like that that's your personal taste, but don't come here saying WiiU doesn't have good games on it, it has the most out of any non handheld console

Bayonetta 2's demo actually hurt my fingers. So much button mashing isn't fun and quite frankly, gets tiring and old quick. I'll get it in a few years in a bargain bin.

Never cared for Dynasty Warriors style of gaming so HW doesn't interest me.

Smash Bros isn't my thing either and I'm kinda done caring about Zelda games.

Technically, I bought my WiiU under the guise I'd pretty much just enjoy 3D Mario, Picmin 3, and MK8. Having only really enjoyed 3D Mario - I'm let down with my WiiU purchase. Also, Nintendo still hasn't learned from their GameCube mistakes - and I actually didn't mind that console.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I beg to differ.

The wii-u compared to ps4 or X1 is that the wii-u is sluggish, loads extremly slow, has only puny 32GB internal space, the stock tablet controller is annoying as it turns on with the wii-u even when using the wii-u pro controller and the battery life of the tablet controller is pathetic. (yes i own the wii-u zelda edition, but only for the few good games for it)

<< LINK REMOVED >> Good riddance. You don't deserve them at their absolute best. The Wii generation I understand. But now? MK8 is one of the best games this gen hands down. And honestly who buys a console until 4-5 games interest them? I really don't understand people on this planet..

What part of 'for me' confused you the most? I've played all the MK games (minus the 3DS one), and 'for me' MK8 isn't that great. It's a polished game that looks pretty, but Double Dash and the N64 games are much better.

If you're going to argue someone's taste - it's a battle you'd lose - every time.

"MK8 was a letdown"

Bruh are you even trying? That's one of the best games for the console alongside Smash Bros

Grading your trolling a 1/10, you get a point for the effort at least
