New $600 Nvidia GTX Card Announced, Faster Than Titan X

The GTX 1080 offers an "irresponsible amount of performance," CEO Jen-Hsun Huang jokes.

Tonight during a special event, Nvidia announced the GTX 1080 card, which is faster than the Titan X, the company's previous top-of-the-line card. It launches this month and will start at $600. The card boasts "irresponsible amounts of performance," Jen-Hsun Huang joked when announcing the GPU.

"...the 1080 is faster than two GTX 980s in SLI..."

The GTX 1080 is based off the company's new Pascal architecture, which supersedes the company's Maxwell architecture, used in the company's 900 series graphics cards. According to Nvidia, billions of R&D dollars went into Pascal and it is the company's most efficient architecture based on the 16nm finfet process, which makes it the first of its kind. The card will also be the first of its kind to use 8GB of G5X video memory, which is the fastest GDDR memory around, and is produced by Micron.

The GTX 1080 is also extremely stable from a power standpoint. Huang showed a slide on stage that showed a GeForce GTX 980 having a peak to peak power fluctuation between 209mV. The 1080, on the other hand, featured a much more consistent power usage with a range of just 120mV. This should make performance more stable for the end user.

In terms of performance, Huang said that the 1080 is faster than two GTX 980s in SLI. It is worth noting that he did not specify under what conditions or resolution. Huang also mentioned that the card is faster than the company's current consumer flagship king, the GeForce GTX Titan. He added that it also consumes much less power.

To demonstrate the power of the card, Huang invited Tim Sweeney on stage to show off Epic's upcoming MOBA Paragon running in real time. In the demo, it was revealed that the GPU clock was running at 2.1GHz, which makes it the fastest core clock on an Nvidia GPU either air cooled or water cooled. This is impressive because the 1080 is an air-cooled card, and air-cooled cards generally do not run as fast as their water-cooled counterparts. We also saw the memory clock running at 5508MHz during the demo with a memory usage of 2655MB, all while running at a cool 67 degrees Celsius under load.

Did we mention that the demo looked great and ran at a constant 60fps?

No Caption Provided

Huang also said that the 1080 is "crazy overclockable," would have 8GB of video memory, and would retail for both $599 and $699, the latter of which would be for the company's "Founder Edition' card which would be even more overclockable.

Huang did not delve into what makes it more overclockable compared to the stock version.

Huang then went on to reveal that the card would be coming out on May 27. And if that wasn't enough, Huang also unveiled the GeForce GTX 1070, which he stated is faster than the $1,000 Titan X. This is impressive since Huang revealed that the card would retail for $379 (with the Founder's Edition running for $449). The 1070 features 8GB of GDDR5 video memory [Editor's Note: A previous version of this article stated the card would use G5X. This was incorrect.] and will release on June 10th.

The 1070 is a great card at $379, you get the performance of 2 970s in sli for almost similar price point slightly more, in computing you hardly get those gains especially after one year, 100% performance gain, if you own a 970 you can probably still sell it for decent value in the low $2XX, and add a little for double the performance!

600 is cheap? Not really when you can buy Polaris Vega in October for under 500 and is more powerful

@justin12421: $500 for vega Crystal ball?, The vega with hbm is already declared a rumor for October, the earliest is mid 2017 as per amd themselves. Amd decided to compete in the $200-$300 price range with Polaris 480x. Unfortunately i believe we will see 1080ti with gddr5x way before vega too.

That's quite the jump and i'm looking forward AMD answer. Looking at how fast the tech is evolving, i wouldn't be surprised if Sony(and probably MS) decide another "upgrade" is in order after another 3 years lol

It's not best time to waste ton's of money on new parts because there is new CPU/GPU incoming from amd zen cpu and radeon gpu that going to be big step ahead than yearly releases so i'm curious what they will deliver , and and intel will release kebby lake before 2017, I would suggest to wait for year and stick with from low end gaming to high end 750ti-980 series for now upgrade RAM maybe if ya want boost, WAIT for a while you won't be disappointed,

@andyvecc011: i believe their focus is more on upcoming zen cpu, which has way more return on investment. If they get zen performance competitive, theyll have more cash, and eventually, with next year's Vega with hbm cover the enthusiast high end market as per AMD themselves.

Oh brother... what's with all these supposed Master Race people not knowing when graphics chips are coming out. This is an industry with at least a 5 year roadmap.

@alaskancrab: I'm still amazed they justify spending so much for moderately better performance that's all front end.

@Gravity_Slave: the 1070 is double the performance of the 970 for moderately more money , just one year later, unheard of in computing industry!

@Gravity_Slave: Moderately? Just a wee bit more of a performance boost than " moderate ". Course.. it's a wee bit more expensive too... tho my computing hobby is still much cheaper than some of my others.. but I digress.

Moderate is a considerable understatement. I think you're well aware of this. Painfully so even?

@uaexfuture:

Sell tbe 770 probably in the mid to low $1XX,

And use the cash to upgrade to 1070 thats about 4X the performance gain than the 770 .

"Did we mention that the demo looked great and ran at a constant 60fps?"

Really? Oh wow if it ran at 60FPS then it's a MUST BUY! I mean there are no other monitors out there that support higher refresh rates, let's entice the end user with fluid 60FPS that anything above 970 can do on all current gen games.

I think I already posted about my excitement for this card, but this is SO exciting for me. I will be selling my 980 ti immediately after my 1080 arrives (I think I'll get the FTW edition card from EVGA, they're my favorite aftermarket manufacturer of Nvidia cards).

I know that next year or later this year they'll announce the next Titan or the 1080ti and the 1080 will be old news, but I can always upgrade at that time. The thing about these high end cards is they retain their resale value fairly well as long as they work. Even a year from now if the 1080 is replaced (when, not if, really) I could probably still get 70-80% of the original purchase price on like eBay or Amazon for it and then use those funds coupled with maybe $200 out of pocket to buy the next big upgrade.

The stats on the 1080 seem impressive and I can't wait for benchmarks to see whether their claims hold water about the power of this card.

I only play 1080p right now because I have a g-sync monitor at 1080p, but I do plan on upgrading to 1440p or maybe even 4k eventually, so while the GTX 1080 seems like overkill, I'm looking toward the future really.

@bookfan8780: If that is true then wait for the TI as there is no point upgrading from a 980ti to a 1080 for just 1080p right now.

@dlaney34: For a 5960x wait for the Titan or TI variant. You want the best on that system. They will come later this year. These only have a 256bit bus so won't be ideal for higher resolutions despite what they are marketing them as.

I don't think it's time to sell my two 970's just yet, I'm still getting great performance at 1440P. This new architecture does look like a pretty big step but I'll wait to see real benchmarks rather than trusting the numbers from Nvidia's marketing team.
