New Batman Game Possibly Teased By Arkham Origins Dev

WB Games Montreal might be gearing up to announce a new project soon.

It appears Batman: Arkham Origins developer WB Games Montreal is teasing its new game. The studio tweeted on September 22 for the first time in more than four years, with what looks to be a cryptic teaser for a new project. Then, on September 23, the studio posted another teaser with a tagline that says "Capture the Knight." That teaser is accompanied by a series of quickly changing symbols that could imply the latest threat Batman will have to face. You can check out the latest teaser below, followed by the earlier one. We'll continue to update this story if any further teasers are shared or if any news comes during today's PlayStation State of Play stream.

The tweet celebrates the 80th anniversary of Batman's first comic book appearance back in 1939 with a video that shows the Bat-Signal projected onto a building. But there is more to it. The video also contains flashes, at :03 and :21, of mysterious symbols that you can see below.

People are speculating that at least one of the symbols is in reference to the secret society, the Court of Owls, that exists in the Batman universe. Intriguingly, a WB Games Montreal developer tweeted in November 2018 a picture of a developer wearing a t-shirt with owl imagery on it. The tweet appears to be in reference to an upcoming, unannounced project.

More evidence for the Court of Owls connection came from Batman comics writer Scott Snyder. He tweeted, and then deleted, a post that specifically mentioned the Court of Owls. He used the hashtag #bewarethecourtofowls in his since-deleted post. You can see a screen-cap of his tweet below.

WB Games Montreal has numerous open positions posted on its jobs website, one of which mentions the studio is working on a "AAA unannounced game." The studio is massive, as it currently employs more than 300 people and continues to staff up.

In 2016, Kotaku reported that WB Games Montreal canceled a Suicide Squad game and shifted focus to a new Batman game starring Damian Wayne. This could be the new title that WB Games Montreal is teasing, as Damian Wayne was featured in the 2012 comic "Night of Owls" that focuses on Batman's fight against the Court of Owls. Nothing is confirmed, however.

In 2018, WB Games Montreal senior designer Osama Dorias said on the Humans of Gaming podcast that the studio was working on a "couple projects" connected to the DC universe. One of these games is a "major console game, open world, DC universe," Dorias said.

Meanwhile, Batman: Arkham Knight studio Rocksteady is also working on a new project, though it has not been announced.

People are speculating that a forthcoming Batman game reveal could happen at the PlayStation State of Play event this week, though nothing at all has lent any credence to this.

That's the demon sign of Ra's al Ghul. And the court of owls which kinda spoils it for me.

This is the most I’ve heard Origins’ existence acknowledged since its release date. It’s always treated as the red-headed stepchild with bundles saying the “Arkham Trilogy” or “all three Arkham games.”

The court of owls was hinted at in Arkham Origins through the secret stuff.

I would fully believe it was going into that story. Where as Origins was a unbalanced and problematic in gameplay, it didn't do a bad job of telling a story (minus the Mr. Freeze dlc, that was just dumb). They will probably or already have probably gotten the developing assets from rocksteady from Arkham knight. I hope they learned there lesson with origins and the backlash they got. No one remembers that game fondly from critics to fans. Once I platinumed it I never played it again. They will hopefully do better a second time, especially since this is probably setting up a new trilogy.

Side note - I'm surprised they haven't released a remastered Origins with AK graphics and redone gameplay.

i loved arkhams but its really hard to see what to do after knight. even if they expand gotham a bit making wayne manor and so on accessible its a very small step. knight has the villains, gameplay and vehicles. i like stories but really games should push for more than just facesplash us with corridors of new chatter and old characters doing same things in same places with different dialogue.

so yeah they had suicide squad, superman, arrow, wonder woman as very prospect candidates. then they have aquaman, flash, cyborg etc or even something nothing to do with dc. batman is far and beyond my fav comic hero but fatigue is heavy

I always wondered if Rocksteady would try something different than Batman. They almost created a genre with this DC superhero, and Urban Chaos Riot response was also pretty unique as a FPS (the only FPS where you're an anti riot unit and actively use a shield). But I don't think I can expect much from people trying to hold the torch.

Personally, I would love to see another foray into the Dark Knight’s world.

Batman: origins, despite not reaching the same critical success of the other entries in the franchise, thanks in part due to being developed by a different team altogether (Rocksteady.), still managed to remain faithful to all the tropes that made the Rocksteady entries so beloved by fans.

In fact, I know this may sound blasphemous, but I personally think Batman: origins may have had the best storyline in the whole franchise.

-Say What, Ninja?!-

I know, right? Don’t get it twisted, I said story. Nothing else. It’s pretty obvious that Origins was a step down (how much however is a subjective opinion.) from the Rocksteady entries but it still was a blast to play and seeing a newly formed and in some aspects “green” Batman take down foes and interact with locales who had no idea who this vigilante in a bat suit was felt somewhat refreshing.

Hopefully WB Montreal Studios has learned a lot from their previous experience in the world of The Batman because if they have then we could all be in for a treat.

-BAT TEASE NINJA APPROVED-

@vega2505: I enjoyed Origins quite a bit. Yeah, the gameplay was just more City with less balance, but the tone and atmosphere was maybe the best in the series. And the story was a lot better/more interesting than City's.

@vega2505: Came here to say exactly this. These guys working on a new Batman game is a BAD thing. This is like being excited that Acclaim is making a new Batman title.

@Prats1993: Arkham Knight was Rocksteady, so clearly not everything they touch turns to gold. Lol. But that said, Origins was so bugged, I literally couldn't finish it. I got into the police station, but a door refused to open, no matter what I did. And based on all the guides I read, I did everything right. I was simply missing a key or something that never spawned. (Been ages, so don't remember the details, sorry.) By the time they fixed the bug, I had already long since moved on to better games.
