New Beyond Good & Evil Trademark Shows Up

Ubisoft has filed a new trademark application for "Beyond Good & Evil," possibly signalling something new for the franchise. DualShockers discovered an April 1 listing (not a joke) in the European Union Intellectual Property Office database for "Beyond Good & Evil," a trademark that covers video games, among other things.

The existence of a trademark does not necessarily mean much on its own. It's possible Ubisoft is simply re-securing its rights over the franchise, and in this case, the trademark also covers things like paper products and clothing related to Beyond Good & Evil. At the same time, though, as DualShockers points out, the emergence of trademark listings has in the past been followed by official announcements soon after.

2003's original Beyond Good & Evil came to GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC. The sequel was first announced by designer Michel Ancel in 2008, at which time he confirmed that the project had already been in preproduction for a year.

Ubisoft hasn't shared much of late regarding Beyond Good & Evil 2, but that doesn't mean it's canceled. Ubisoft Montpellier continues to work on this "extremely ambitious project," the developer said in August 2014.

"In many ways, [Beyond Good & Evil] is an inimitable game--it appeals to all generations of gamers and is an inspiration behind many of Ubisoft Montpellier's past and future games," a Ubisoft representative said at the time. "It's still far too early to give many details about this new title."
