New Call of Duty biz unit unveiled, Sledgehammer COD confirmed, Asian MMOG spin-off planned

[UPDATE] Activision unveils department focused on expanding franchise, confirms rumors Bay Area studio working on COD "action-adventure" title; mystery COD title due in 2011; massively multiplayer licensing in negotiations; Infinity Ward apparently involved only in MW2 expansions.

The day after a dramatic shake-up at Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward, Activision Blizzard has officially revealed its plans for the studio's signature Call of Duty series. As suspected, those will not include studio president Jason West and CEO Vince Zampella, who "are no longer with Infinity Ward," according to a statement. Two Activision Publishing executives, chief technology officer Steve Pearce and head of production Steve Ackrich "will lead Infinity Ward on an interim basis."

Activision has officially revealed its covert plans for the Call of Duty series.
Activision has officially revealed its covert plans for the Call of Duty series.

In fact, Activision's Call of Duty plans largely exclude the studio that created the signature first-person shooter series. In an announcement this afternoon, the company said it is forming a massive new business unit dedicated entirely to expanding the first-person shooter franchise.

However, other than the two upcoming Modern Warfare 2 map packs, the announcement does not mention Infinity Ward at all. This means the studio could be focusing on the "unique new IP" it announced in 2008 when many of its top developers renewed their contracts.

In a statement, Activision Blizzard said that the new business unit will "expand the Call of Duty brand with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit. This will include a focus on high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."

As suspected, the next Call of Duty will be developed by Treyarch and will arrive sometime later this year. According to rumors last year, it will be set during either the Cold War or the Vietnam War. Activision did not offer any new details about the game's plot, setting, or launch.

However, Activision did confirm a long-standing rumor that a second Call of Duty game is in the works at a non-Infinity Ward studio. That shop is indeed Sledgehammer Games, the San Francisco Bay Area studio Activision formed last year by hiring two key Dead Space developers away from Electronic Arts. The unnamed title "will extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre," according to the statement, lending weight to rumors the project is a third-person spin-off of the series.

[UPDATE & CORRECTION] In addition to the Sledgehammer COD game, which has no release date, there is another COD due out in 2011 from an unknown studio--which could even possibly be Infinity Ward. GameSpot initially reported that the Sledgehammer game was due out in 2011 and regrets the error.

Were that not enough news, Activision also confirmed that it is moving forward on CEO Bobby Kotick's stated desire to expand the Call of Duty brand into massively multiplayer gaming. The company said that it is "in discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world." The majority of those games are based on the microtransaction-based business model. A Call of Duty version of such a game might resemble Electronic Arts' free-to-play war shooter Battlefield: Heroes, launched last year.

The man leading the new Call of Duty unit certainly has experience in the East. He is Philip Earl, current head of Activision Publishing's Asia Pacific operations and a former senior executive at Nestle and Procter & Gamble.

People really can't say Halo is overdone now. There are three Halo games, one expansion, one spinoff and one game in development. There have been six CoDs to date, a planned seventh, two unnamed spin-offs and a MMOG announced. Damn it Activision!

Well, I'm going to look at this on the bright side, as a Wii owner: The more COD games they decide to put out, the more likely it is that at least half of them will show up on the Wii. Yes, I own Modern Warfare finally, and yes, I love it. Now, for the love of God, give me MW2...or the guys from the gum commercials will find you.

I hate COD MF2 it was a disgrace of a game and I was praying the single player would be over soo fast soo I could get the achievements. Also the online is not that good, COD 5 had better and cool voice acting w/Jack Bauer from 24 dong the online VO. I don't like infinity ward they can't make descent games, just know how to over hype one that is all.

In two years Call of Duty will be what Guitar Hero is now, a franchise that no one wants anymore because it was overproduced.

lol I guess Activision plans on killing the Call of Duty franchise just like they killed the Guitar Hero franchise. Not that I thought MW2 was the best game ever but it was definitely better than World at War... Maybe Treyarch will be able to pull it off this time with thier next COD game.

It also makes me wonder if Kotickvision will ever realize that releasing so many installments within such close proximity to each other will actually force the brand to compete against itself. I'm honestly not sure whether that's a good thing or not on paper, but it sounds asinine to me.

Activision, as in the delegation of tokyo were a little pissed with Infinity. Chatting on msn with my friend about this news, I heard that Infinity wanted to do COD game every year and the other not to get involved. Infinity wanted to seize the COD brand and can make more benefits. Activision also said that they expressed the downloable content such as COD 5 (improvements: weapons, maps, game modes etc. ..) and they said they would rather make a new COD rather than make downloable content. Hence you pay for content that is within the game. It is speculated that these new maps should have been included in the game, but they did not leave the maps in the game (we all know this) ... Besides, the heads of Infinity were trying to close several contracts with other companies outside Activision from the success of COD 4. They wanted to go and take the series COD for themselves, Activision refused ofc. Anyway, the Infinity contract ends in few months, and it is uncertain whether they will renew. And as we read in the news, the new COD will be charged to Sledgehammer Games. Does this means..Goodbye "infinity? As I said before, I think EA will be interested in infinity and Jason West, Vince Zampella. I think it is safer to talk to EA . Over time we'll know. EA is better option I guess..

Why would they get rid of Infinity Ward? Dump Treyarch! Infinity made CoD2 and the modern warfares which were so much better than Treyarch's CoD3 and World at War. Infinity really is a better developer.

this made me want to vomit. bobby ko-dick is going to wring this franchise dry of any and all quality and integrity it may have ever posessed. they might as well just release the games with whatever year it is attached to the titles like all sports games these days. i have no doubt treyarch's game will be good, mostly because it will follow their pattern used in World At War, namely impliment everything Infinity Ward did with multiplayer the previous year, use a new setting, add some dismemberment and vehicles, etc... just wondering how you can make a full-length campaign about a series of conflicts involving surrogates of the U.S. and U.S.S.R. comprising almost 60 years. but seriously, a third person action-adventure game? uncharted call 8: duty among thieves? AN MMO?! call of warcraft 9?! ACTIVISION IS THE GAMING EQUIVALENT OF A MONEY EATING PARASITE.

Cod as we know it is no more. The soul of the game has just been killed by Activision. Be ready for well reviewed yet truly mundane games. Another sad, but predictable addition to the corporitization of video gaming This does make me wonder how much IW actually had to do with the lack of dedicated servers and the creation of IW.net. It stinks of Activision interference. There is going to be a significant court battle coming for Activision because they have not paid IW royalties for the series yet.

No AlienMinator there hasn't. It switches between Infinity Ward and Treyarch developing, the next COD sounds like its coming from Treyarch which doesn't do the Modern Warfare series. Sounds like IW might be done for? That's horrible. Thank you, Activision Blizzard for screwing this up. Heaven forbid you're content with releasing a Modern Warfare game every other year. Unless I see a MW3 done by Infinity Ward, I might be done with this series.

Activision's been around for 30 plus years. I hope the "new" company bleeds them to bankruptcy. Games are getting old and pointless... WWII games and short lived "Modern Warfare" games with the same theme as years back. With nothing "new" to sell, its time to retire Activision along with the Colecovsion (remember them..?).

also COD name is own by Activision right? is Modern Warfare is not then what the former IW can do is get together and start from fresh and make a game and call is ONLY Modern Warfare 3 with out any COD on it. Thats not copy righting. If those 2 people open up a web site and ask for donations so they can build up there gaming development then ill be glad to donate and show Activision & Treyarch whos boss. i mean really? you really think Treyarch has nothing to do with those 2 people from IW getting fired? i bet Treyarch had every single thing to do with it so they can win over the new IP and continue to make other COD games.

This doesn't really affect me as I am a World At War player. I feel bad for the fans of the MW2 series though. There was that cliffhanger ending in MW2 that will never get the proper resolution(ending) to the storyline now. The dudes that got the axe were responsible for the COD franchise and the Granddaddy of them all, the Medal of Honor series, which when you think about it, is the Original Gangsta of the military shooter genre.

Reading these comments made me happy. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one sick to death of Call of Duty now. Congratulations Activision, you're about to spend millions expanding this franchise but nobody's interested anymore because you release them every single year with a 3 hour campaign and same-old multiplayer. I'd love to see the look on Bobby Kotick's face when the first sales report for these new games come through. I feel sorry for Treyarch and Sledgehammer though, I doubt they have a choice in this.

Well now we are to be pretty assured that they're going to pound this franchise into the ground, just like with Guitar Hero. There might still be a good game every year or two, but the rest will be filler.... hell maybe they'll all be filler with no proper IW anymore...and probably sell like hotcakes anyway, at least for a while.

The anticipation of a God Of War or Halo is what it's all about. A COD coming out every six months would suck because the quality would only increase a tiny bit, and the wow factor will be gone. How many GHero games are there?????? This is what you are gonna get. Activision announces 1) COD 37 MW 47 2) Call of Duty Modern Mens Ware 3) Call of Zelda 4) Modern Hero 5) Modern Hero Fps (Beatles version) {running around poking people with your guitar] and so on.......

Man do the guys at activison just love failing or what. It's like they sit around and say how can we make this suck. Guitar Hero was huge then they drove that right into the ground. Brutal legend, Ghostbusters, etc, didn't even give it a chance. And now this.

Activision on its' own has a less than steller record lately.Who in their right mind would take a game that works on all engines and alter it.You bring COD to 3rd person action, you better call it something else because it won't be COD and I for one won"t be playing.
