New Call of Duty biz unit unveiled, Sledgehammer COD confirmed, Asian MMOG spin-off planned

[UPDATE] Activision unveils department focused on expanding franchise, confirms rumors Bay Area studio working on COD "action-adventure" title; mystery COD title due in 2011; massively multiplayer licensing in negotiations; Infinity Ward apparently involved only in MW2 expansions.

The day after a dramatic shake-up at Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward, Activision Blizzard has officially revealed its plans for the studio's signature Call of Duty series. As suspected, those will not include studio president Jason West and CEO Vince Zampella, who "are no longer with Infinity Ward," according to a statement. Two Activision Publishing executives, chief technology officer Steve Pearce and head of production Steve Ackrich "will lead Infinity Ward on an interim basis."

Activision has officially revealed its covert plans for the Call of Duty series.
Activision has officially revealed its covert plans for the Call of Duty series.

In fact, Activision's Call of Duty plans largely exclude the studio that created the signature first-person shooter series. In an announcement this afternoon, the company said it is forming a massive new business unit dedicated entirely to expanding the first-person shooter franchise.

However, other than the two upcoming Modern Warfare 2 map packs, the announcement does not mention Infinity Ward at all. This means the studio could be focusing on the "unique new IP" it announced in 2008 when many of its top developers renewed their contracts.

In a statement, Activision Blizzard said that the new business unit will "expand the Call of Duty brand with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit. This will include a focus on high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."

As suspected, the next Call of Duty will be developed by Treyarch and will arrive sometime later this year. According to rumors last year, it will be set during either the Cold War or the Vietnam War. Activision did not offer any new details about the game's plot, setting, or launch.

However, Activision did confirm a long-standing rumor that a second Call of Duty game is in the works at a non-Infinity Ward studio. That shop is indeed Sledgehammer Games, the San Francisco Bay Area studio Activision formed last year by hiring two key Dead Space developers away from Electronic Arts. The unnamed title "will extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre," according to the statement, lending weight to rumors the project is a third-person spin-off of the series.

[UPDATE & CORRECTION] In addition to the Sledgehammer COD game, which has no release date, there is another COD due out in 2011 from an unknown studio--which could even possibly be Infinity Ward. GameSpot initially reported that the Sledgehammer game was due out in 2011 and regrets the error.

Were that not enough news, Activision also confirmed that it is moving forward on CEO Bobby Kotick's stated desire to expand the Call of Duty brand into massively multiplayer gaming. The company said that it is "in discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world." The majority of those games are based on the microtransaction-based business model. A Call of Duty version of such a game might resemble Electronic Arts' free-to-play war shooter Battlefield: Heroes, launched last year.

The man leading the new Call of Duty unit certainly has experience in the East. He is Philip Earl, current head of Activision Publishing's Asia Pacific operations and a former senior executive at Nestle and Procter & Gamble.

All you CoD fans prepare to have your beloved franchise beaten into the dirt, where it's very name elicits an uncontrollable dry heave. I weep for you and with you

Well in my opinion i think that activision is milking CoD too much. I mean one of the greatest FPS hits in FPS history turned into an MMOG or action-adventure? Well i will buy every CoD game with the exception of the MMOG(if there is one). Also how are they planning an action-adventure?

A CoD MMO would be a great thing IF anyone but Activision were involved. As described above, it wouldn't be anymore then a bunch of maps that you either pay a subscription to play OR have to purchase individually through microtransactions. In either case, it won't be an MMO...just a new way to cheat ....err..ahh....sell "product". Sometimes I think the gaming industry no longer has any sense nor any true gamer spirit like it did in the past.

As good as the non-infinity ward cod's are, i haven't bought them. Why? Because why would I play a weaker version when the superior one is available? That's probably what all the future cod's seem like they will be now. Too bad.

Just like every other major milking, Activision is gong to wear the shine off this IP. It seems great now and the recent releases haven't oversaturated, but it sounds like that's about to change. I say poor form.

see now here is the thing, you can do as much talking and discussing as you want but all i can say is: WHY THE HELL NOT JUST LEAVE IT TO INFINITY WARD?! They do a hell of a good job, the only thing i could ask for is a co-up campaign and then you basically have the greatest shooter with nothing more needed!

look, we all want a good product. COD is good, but I think Bad Co is a much better multiplayer experience. The COD franchise has taken the Madden approach to gamming as of late - pump 'em out with only minor tweeks each year...

People just don't know where the turn off button is. CoD is milked way too much and should get its space in the museum and die. Can't they just make something NEW? Copying old stuff will end in a bunch of pale deja-vus. If those guys are the game devs, they can sure think of something new without ruining something other dev teams created. Spit in the Activision's face by not buying their stuff and they'll stop making it.

This is just too much! They became more greedy than Microsoft during '90. It's all about the money and I see that Call of Duty franchise has become money sucking games. Sad, really sad.

@blissleeds: I partially agree with yoo. I wouldn'd dare to call people that purchased COdMW2 idiots, since its a matter of preference. However, I do agree that we could see this coming from Activision's business practices and that's why I stopped buying their games a long time ago.

They do it because YOU,idiots and so called gamers buy their products.Let`s be honest MW2 is not as good as we think it is.It got good reviews because Activision forced everyone(or paid off) to write it is good.Yes ,it is a good game but nowhere near being brilliant. It is a good tactics. The same thing goes for EA.They knew FIFA will never beat Pro Evo so they pay everyone to say IT IS better. And you suckers fall for it.Once again-DO NOT BUY IT AND DO NOT SUPPORT IT!!!!Show some loyalty to Infinity Ward!!!

Activision thinks that the Call of Duty brand is what sells the games. They are very wrong Infinity Ward produced the best COD games. Activision thinks they can take the brand, use other developers to make the games and still make a billion. People bought MW2 because MW1 was excellent people will by the next Call of duty because MW2 was excellent, however if the next call of duty isn’t excellent people won’t come back for the instalment after that. In short Activision is assigning too much value to the brand rather than the developers. Brands die because people get sick of buying the same game year after year Tony Hawk died, Medal of honour died, Guitar hero died so will COD (EA finally learnt this). The only reason COD lasted so long was because Infinity Ward chose to reinvigorate it with the MW series Activision was against this decision. Activisions are pretending they are behind the success of MW2 and they know what’s best but we all know otherwise.

Okay so they run the guitar hero name into the ground and then start doing the same with Call of Duty? Makes you wonder if thats why the two guys got kicked out in the first place, i dont think they would have been too happy seeing their games being dragged through the mud so Activision can make a quick buck.

I say we should all meet and go after those bastards at Activision and put them all at the wall and shoot them all ( see COD MW ) or maybe gather all of them in a room and flame thrower them ( see COD WW ) or even better put all of them in an airport to take a plane and we will be behind them ( see COD MW2 ) and after that maybe they will come to theyr sences. They will destroy the Call of Duty name and brand...

i wouldn't mind 2 call of duty games in 1 year. just be hard making up my mind on which one to get but eventually i would get both buts its all about what to get first. COD 7 i hope will be set in Vietnam or whatever just no more WWII shooters its getting old and i don't think there's no more milk to milk. how about a WWI shooter its like nothing happened in WWI there just happen to call it that. now a action-adventure wouldn't be bad. tell the story of ghost before he died in MW2 with all stealth and stuff. for a Call of duty: MMO the idea sounds great i hope there up the game by doing 300 sumthin to challenge MAG or stick to 256 just the idea would be awesome. imagine a MMO Nazi zombies. with like 8 to 12 people then 4 people and set it modern day. you don't get 1 type of zombies you get variety of zombies. another to include in the Next COD driver able tanks, planes, helicopter, boats what ever. i just hope COD will have these thing and it would be the perfect shooter of all time.

I really hope Activision goes bankrupt soon, because they keep devaluating good games by mass producing them and not caring about quality, if they ruin the company the the licenses for the good franchises can be sold to better publishers who actually care about quality. IW was the only developer that fought them on this matter and that won't just do as they were told and Activision then chooses to fire the two guys that are actually making them rich, bad idea Activision, very bad idea.
