New Call of Duty biz unit unveiled, Sledgehammer COD confirmed, Asian MMOG spin-off planned

[UPDATE] Activision unveils department focused on expanding franchise, confirms rumors Bay Area studio working on COD "action-adventure" title; mystery COD title due in 2011; massively multiplayer licensing in negotiations; Infinity Ward apparently involved only in MW2 expansions.

The day after a dramatic shake-up at Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward, Activision Blizzard has officially revealed its plans for the studio's signature Call of Duty series. As suspected, those will not include studio president Jason West and CEO Vince Zampella, who "are no longer with Infinity Ward," according to a statement. Two Activision Publishing executives, chief technology officer Steve Pearce and head of production Steve Ackrich "will lead Infinity Ward on an interim basis."

Activision has officially revealed its covert plans for the Call of Duty series.
Activision has officially revealed its covert plans for the Call of Duty series.

In fact, Activision's Call of Duty plans largely exclude the studio that created the signature first-person shooter series. In an announcement this afternoon, the company said it is forming a massive new business unit dedicated entirely to expanding the first-person shooter franchise.

However, other than the two upcoming Modern Warfare 2 map packs, the announcement does not mention Infinity Ward at all. This means the studio could be focusing on the "unique new IP" it announced in 2008 when many of its top developers renewed their contracts.

In a statement, Activision Blizzard said that the new business unit will "expand the Call of Duty brand with the same focus seen in its Blizzard Entertainment business unit. This will include a focus on high-margin digital online content and further the brand as the leading action entertainment franchise in new geographies, new genres and with new digital business models."

As suspected, the next Call of Duty will be developed by Treyarch and will arrive sometime later this year. According to rumors last year, it will be set during either the Cold War or the Vietnam War. Activision did not offer any new details about the game's plot, setting, or launch.

However, Activision did confirm a long-standing rumor that a second Call of Duty game is in the works at a non-Infinity Ward studio. That shop is indeed Sledgehammer Games, the San Francisco Bay Area studio Activision formed last year by hiring two key Dead Space developers away from Electronic Arts. The unnamed title "will extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre," according to the statement, lending weight to rumors the project is a third-person spin-off of the series.

[UPDATE & CORRECTION] In addition to the Sledgehammer COD game, which has no release date, there is another COD due out in 2011 from an unknown studio--which could even possibly be Infinity Ward. GameSpot initially reported that the Sledgehammer game was due out in 2011 and regrets the error.

Were that not enough news, Activision also confirmed that it is moving forward on CEO Bobby Kotick's stated desire to expand the Call of Duty brand into massively multiplayer gaming. The company said that it is "in discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world." The majority of those games are based on the microtransaction-based business model. A Call of Duty version of such a game might resemble Electronic Arts' free-to-play war shooter Battlefield: Heroes, launched last year.

The man leading the new Call of Duty unit certainly has experience in the East. He is Philip Earl, current head of Activision Publishing's Asia Pacific operations and a former senior executive at Nestle and Procter & Gamble.

They really need to revise their marketing strategies, I found what I just read completely stupid. Seriously a COD MMO ? Can't they realise they are over-using the CoD brand ? *sigh*

If the Vietnam game gets made that is da best news ever, M60's, M16's. Awesome war for a game. But spin offs will just hav the guitar hero effect on COD. Hope they put the aussies into the game, they were da awesome, ive me some aussie vietnam vets and they told stories of an aussie soldier who had a feather & told an american soldier it was a kangaroo feather & he traded it 4 a jeep haha!! or an aussie who traded a slab of VB for a chopper with an american soldier LOL!!

can't we just get rid of IW and Activision, and all will be well. To think that IW are getting away with litereally screwing over gamers, is just sad. Has the sense of quality just dissapeard?

This looks like Activision think any game they produce that they can stick 'Call of Duty' in front of will sell in the same numbers as MW2. If MW2 has taught me anything it's to be wary of the next game in the series and the Treyarch titles have always been the ugly friend of the Infinity Ward ones. Sledgehammer have some great industry talent but are (obviously) unproven so I'll not hold my breath yet. The MMO idea I think is terrible but I understand why Kotick wants to go in that direction. I just can't help but compare it all to Sonic the Hedgehog, great original titles that they forgot how to make and then they milked it until all that was left was dust... That's the direction this is all heading.

You can have too much of a good thing, and it's more than possible to over-use a genre/IP. The games are, let's face it, really good - but I've never been happy with the way they crank out these titles so frequently and close to each other. It's like they've found something that works and now they're going to suck the soul out of the thing just to make the cash. Far, far better to have a more measured release schedule, with each title being properly refined and re-defined. This just smells of money grabbing all over. I'm not naive enough to think that that's not the goal of every game now, but it's a crying shame.

Think they are trying to milk all the money they can, while they can and just sell the company and retire with a rather large amount of money lol

I think they are trying to make it play like Uncharted/Gears of War. Haha good luck with that. Just stick to FPS and dont release CoD so soon and watch sales be alot better!

If the COD MMO forces P2P then the COD series will die a slow, painful death.

MMO COD? Elite soldiers meet up in town and party up to stop terrorist orcs or something? Don't take on the Bin Laden Red Dragon too soon, you need to grind a bit to stand a chance. I see this as another "Guitar Hero". We're going to have 20 COD iterations in 2 years and no one will buy them anymore so Activision thinks they need to close down Infinity Ward and Treyarch because they "aren't making good games anymore" even though they're just doing what they're told.

Does anyone else fear another inevitable round of dev studio layoffs if these titles fail to live up to Activision's sales expectations? Seriously doubt most of these will turn out to be full fledged AAA titles or come close to MW in sales anyways (I mean, people still like playing games set in the Vietnam war?)

Cod as an action game..wow I just can't even fathom that this is happening again - a third coming trainwreck. In before the 10 spinoffs that will inevitably follow before closing out further production of Cod by 2012.

What is it with people saying IW is the Godly CoD maker. Correction, "WAS". CoD 4 was the greatest CoD and still is. Treyarch brought it lower, and besides the campaign, IW brought it even lower. MW2 just has too much, it felt like a forced and unbalanced over the top feel. I really did want to like it, but couldn't, I bought Bad Company 2, and WOW this is the game that should be selling over CoD (won't happen but it should). R.I.P CoD

It's a big scheme. they probably kill their own franchises by allowing it to be developed by other studios, so their new IP is going to be a lot more shiny compared to their other games. The MMO idea is pretty stupid CoD doesn't even have an accurate storyline...

If Infinity Ward doesn't make more MW/CoD's I'm out. The CoD frachise is a FPS only franchise....man....how come a little ol joe like me isn't running a huge company like activision....or any of us gamers for that matter. Out with the high class money hungry clowns and bring in people that know how to run a game company. I miss the old days of small devs crafting their games to perfection.

lol, they may kill the call of duty franchise too if they make them into a MMOG. Just like how EA killed Command & Conquer. And how come can they (Activision) lend the rights to Sledgehammer Games? it would be bad. :(

Well I must admit I'm surprised. The layoff of two important people, from a very very profiting franchise (people who built the series from the ground up) is not a good idea. And, I don't think that Treyarch can handle COD by themselves.

You'd think Activision would learn its lesson, after oversaturating the market with Guitar Hero games caused them to undersell. They really want to do the same thing with Call of Duty? I am consistently in awe of just how idiotic and money-grubbing Activision's business model is. I know making games is a business and it's about money, but they take it to a whole new level.

That figures. Means we're probably going to get another crap title like World at War. Another case of a big company messing with a great selling product to try and milk it for all it's worth. Chances are they'll end up doing what so many other companies do when they get too greedy. They will now destroy the COD series by releasing multiple games a year. Or at least a yearly COD game. Now instead of getting a well polished, awesome shooter we'll get a mediocre game each year until nobody cares about COD anymore. Wouldn't be the first franchise Activision did to the death. Looks like I'll be looking elsewhere for my shooter fix in the coming years

Activtions are idiots for not letting infinity ward to make the next call of duty, infinity ward are the creators of the series and were the makers of the 2 best selling games ever. I can promise u now that a infinity ward cod game would sell much more than a another company making cod. (eg: cod3 and cod5 didn't sell as good as cod4 or mw2 cuz cod3 and cod5 were made by Treyarch)
