New Call of Duty Confirmed for 2016, Coming From Infinity Ward

Here it comes.

While it may not be much of a surprise, Activision today officially announced that a new Call of Duty game will launch this holiday. The game, as suspected, will be developed by Infinity Ward, the creators of the uber-popular Modern Warfare series.

No Caption Provided

Infinity Ward's new Call of Duty game was described by Activision as "innovative," though no concrete details about the game have been divulged. It will be the studio's first new game since 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts, which was the first entry in the blockbuster series for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The Call of Duty series is on a three-year, three studio development cycle. 2015's game, Black Ops III, was developed by Treyarch, while Sledgehammer Games made 2014's Advanced Warfare.

Infinity's Ward's 2016 Call of Duty game is not expected to make as much money as Black Ops III, Activision said during an earnings call. However, revenue from the overall Call of Duty franchise is expected to be up year-over-year due in part to downloadable content offerings for Black Ops III.

It was also confirmed today that a new Skylanders game will launch this year, though no other details on the game were made available.

Additionally, Activision said two of its big holiday quarter games, Guitar Hero Live and Skylanders SuperChargers, "performed weaker than expected." The publisher said the downturn for SuperChargers was largely the result of "greater competition" in the toys-to-life genre, presumably referencing Disney Infinity, Lego Dimensions, and Nintendo's Amiibo. Activision also said SuperChargers and Guitar Hero Live struggled as a result of "the casual audience's shift to mobile devices."

Infinity Ward's new Call of Duty game was announced today as part of Activision Blizzard's earnings report for the fourth quarter and full year. For the full year, Activision Blizzard pulled in $4.62 billion in revenue, compared to $4.81 billion during calendar year 2014.

For the quarter, net revenue was $2.12 billion, down from $2.21 billion during the same period last year. Revenue from digital content was $780 million, a new record. Additionally, for the quarter, net revenue from digital content made up a fourth quarter record of 37 percent, jumping 14 percent year over-year.

Activision is currently holding an earnings call where more information may be discussed. We'll update this post if new information is made available.

Hmm. Innovative... because it will have "COD" in the title. It will feature online TDM as it's core mode and have a $#!& ton of DLC designed to milk as much money as humanly possible out of the fanbase. At the end of the day it'll be released and essentially be another extended map pack for MW1, 2, 3, and AW.

Will the innovation never stop!?

Probably another futuristic or near-future setting with all kinds of advanced weaponry, gadgets, and perks. I wanna go back to the days with the M16 popping off a three round burst with the satisfying bullet hitting the helmet sound confirming my headshot.

@brewskimi: Also, the picture in the article brings back memories of how awesome and truly innovative the original MW was and how every title since has been unsuccessfully (not in terms of sales numbers obviously) trying to reproduce that.

But i thought most of the actual infinity ward crew left with the heads when they where fired years ago after MW2... so you mean, "EA's version of infinity ward"

@tsuingosuto1985: That's the reason Ghosts didn't feel as fluid as mw2 or mw3.

@Scream_AimxFire: Ghosts ended on a cliffhanger. They won't make it super futuristic because it wouldn't make sense.

@Scream_AimxFire: I agree, they should stop with futuristic crap in COD, it's getting old. They should go back to WW2 or whats happening now.

A Call of Duty and Skylanders this year?! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT! Cant wait for the announcement that it's still being released for last gen consoles. That's the only reason I clicked this article; to see if they were going to finally say they are building a new COD, with a new engine, for current gen only. God how naive. F*ck Activivsion.

just like someone said down a couple comments. i am happy that i took Ghost and AW off. Didnt buy only tried. After the how many days i borrowed them from Redbox and my buddies, i knew both games were complete crap. So if they make Ghost 2 you better believe i wont be buying it. How beautiful would it be if the Remastered MW and MW2????

they need to go back and fix the hit detection for online multiplayer, mw1 did it a amazing job on it, mw2 was good, mw3 was decient, ghosts on the ps4 was bad (during it's launch).

@nintendians: One of the things CoD: Ghosts had going for it was the hit detection. It was actually too good, lmao.

@liquidation_ily: and that's why it's a good thing, hopefully they don't mess that up on their next launch, I always prefer their games over 3arc and sledgehammer's.

@speechone: The proper terminology is remake, not a remaster. I assume that's what you meant because remaster and remake are different.

Funny how everyone expects the Infinity Ward games to be the weakest of all three studios now. Ghosts was pretty awful and it's likely they'll go down the sequel route after leaving that game on a crappy cliffhanger.

@robertcain: thats because the heads of IW where fired after MW2 and most the developers left with them, so most of them where replaced, its not the IW we once knew and loved

Anything but futuristic please. I hope they don't go the Ghosts II route. I would be happy going back to MW and even happier if they went back to WWII.

@Shantmaster_K Agreed. Although I think we are probably looking at futuristic. It's what the 12 year old's want, so they are catering to their base.

@jbattelle924: Sad isn't it? Not sure how reliable this info is, but I heard that many of the pros want CoD to go back to its original roots. Hopefully this true and Infinity Ward listens to them.

Will be interested if they go back to WWII or WWI... I'm tired of these super futuristic Call of Duties with people flying around with jet packs, running on walls, and single player stories that are terrible and super weird. BO3 single player was the worst by far. I miss the feeling that Call of Duty 2 gave you when you could hunker down in a bush and snipe people and then have to find a new spot because your cover was blown. Now a days people run in circles on these small maps mindlessly killing and being killed. Anyways for me to go back to call of duty this next installment would have to be very different from what has come out recently.

Ahhhhh ... I'm good for a while, the last few COD FPS games have been really lacking in strategy and way too much mtn dew extreme bro gameness for me. I think I will pass on this years COD.

But, let me know when Modern Warfare 4 comes out!
