New Dark Souls II Patch Finally Fixes Year-Old Durability Bug

Check out the full patch notes.

Publisher Bandai Namco and developer From Software have detailed a new patch for Dark Souls II that will finally fix the game's year-old weapon durability bug.

The bug, which affects Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC players, caused weapons to break faster because weapon durability is tied to frame rate, which is higher on those platforms than it was in the original Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

No Caption Provided

Bandai Namco has yet to announce an exact release date for the patch, but said that it'll release it in the coming weeks. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review of Dark Souls II and Dark Sould II: Scholar of the First Sin the current gen version which includes all 3 DLC packs.

You can check out the full list of changes the patch will make below.

On Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Steam (DirectX 9), Steam (DirectX 11):

  • Fixed issue whereby weapon durability was decreased drastically when used on enemy corpses, friendly characters, etc. (Especially apparent for users running the game at 60 fps as the durability decrease rate was linked to the frame rate).
  • Fixed issue whereby actions requiring both button and stick controller input (Jump Attack, Guard Break) were not properly registering in-game.

On Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Steam (DirectX 11):

  • Fixed issue whereby summoning sign was displayed in Drangleic Castle and Throne of Want even though the player had defeated all bosses in the area.
  • Fixed issue whereby the moment of death replay for some blood stains weren't being displayed online.
  • Fixed issue whereby client side may hang during the event movie for Laddersmith Gilligan in Earthen Peak.
  • Fixed issue whereby the Host may not be able to load their save data after stopping the game while waiting for matching to complete in online mode.

On Xbox One:

  • Fixed issue whereby game may quit suddenly if player pauses the system during online multiplayer.
  • Fixed issue whereby game may leave online multiplayer if the user pauses the system during online play then starts the game again.
  • Fixes issue whereby the game may hang if the user goes back and forth between different maps over and over again.
  • Fixed issue whereby the host may not return to normal offline play as intended when their network connection is cut off during online multiplayer.

On Steam (DirectX 9):

  • Fixed issue whereby, when playing online, it may appear that the player is sliding forward because the walking motion animation is not being displayed properly.

Maybe they should "fix" the non-respawning enemies instead. Or at least make it an option to turn on/off respawning.

That's nice. I'd like for a few other 'fixes' (a ring for invisibility, ring for ninja flips, ring for silent walking, ring for quick movement through sludge, Karmic Justice, make Immolation not suck, make Iron Flesh not suck, etc.). Perhaps just start by undoing the work of the patch that stripped away all the spell uses, poise damage, direct damage, etc. of spells in general (making physical the only way to go). It's bad enough that the DLC areas still keep their extreme resistances to non-physical attacks as is. Doesn't exactly make me want to do non-physical builds as is. Perhaps make 'bleed' not suck so damn much too. Have NPCs follow the same rules as us like they ought to. Give DaS2 the DaS1 treatment on a few fronts (like how 'save/quit' works, i-frame instances, denial of warping until a certain item is acquired *but not putting it very far into the game*, etc.).

NOTE: Interesting that the 'jump attack' got mucked up. I was wondering why I was suddenly having so many issues executing it.

This bug went on for so long, people were honestly convinced that it was actually a design choice by From Software to discourage button mashing. I guess those theories were wrong. It was just a stupid bug after all.

I guess people can finally tour the Wharf now without being forced to carry 12 weapons around as they gradually become at risk of breaking one-by-one.

I don't know about everyone else, but I need to see a patch that fixes the unreliable server/multiplayer connection. Whether I have cross-region play enabled or restricted, I can only play ten or twenty minutes before I have "lost connection to game server" and get dumped into offline mode. Awful.

@toophat2014: I've read something about this before (I'm not 100% either), but if I recall correctly, the human eye can't perceive that much beyond 60fps. Pretty sure I notice the difference of 30 fps and 60 fps (comparing bloodborne and ds2)

@TimmyDKJR@toophat2014: human eye can see up to 120fps .30-60 looks pretty much the same but just feels so much smoother to play.

@djisgod15@TimmyDKJR@toophat2014:

if you can see the flickering of LED lights, and Fluorescent Bulbs, you see above 60Hz. Because AC Current travels at 60Hz, it is the most use refresh rate. 120Hz requires multiple signal sources, displaying in alternating uses.

240Hz requires 4 sources, consider the fact that you can see less flicker from a 60Hz bulb, than a 30Hz, because you cannot comprehend the light/dark fluctuations fast enough. Having 240Hz is about equal to Sunlight, in terms of Flickering that the human Eye can see.

I personally have a very difficult time playing anything below 60 Frames per Second.

@hypgnosis:

This seems to be the only Positive thing that has ever come out of using a lower framerate... Games that are built around visuals alone, and sacrifice Framerate, tend to wear out our eyes, causing people to dislike the game sooner, based on our need to reset our neurons more often.

Playing a game with 30fps locked, causes unnecessary stress on your eyes. 60fps/60Hz has been proven to cause infinitely less eye strain.

@hypgnosis: It may be this fix

  • Fixes issue whereby the game may hang if the user goes back and forth between different maps over and over again.

Had some "random" crashes too but they may indeed have been related to traveling a lot between bonfires.

I own both Xbox one and PS4 but only played and bought copies on my Xbox 360, PS4' and PC and neither of those platforms that I bought copies for did I get any freezing issues. Only noticable issue for me at least for Ps4 and PC was the durability bug. Btw own the SOTFS on PC and PS4 own the original on Xbox 360 and PC.

That doesn't make it harder it makes it annoying as only 3 hits with some weapons that you worked hard to be rewarded or find before it breaks is not a smart design and surely not intentional.

Might let this breath for a while and pick back up after the patch. Durability bug isn't game-breaking at all, though. I've more than managed with my longsword and Heide knight sword. No repair powder needed.

I heard running at 60 fps also makes it harder to deliver special attacks. Because the window were you can attack is shorter. How about fixing that as well?!?

Honestly I find myself sometimes playing the original due to annoying bugs like this and don't find the enemy placement better either. But will say there are some good improvements and ideas with SOTFS that should have been in the original from launch. I liked most of the changes and improvements in SOTFS but not fond of the new enemy placements which I find cheap and easier way of them adding more difficulty instead of doing it the right way and in same fashion and tradition with past souls games, obviously the durability bug, and could care less about if game stood 30fps or went 60fps as long as either is steady and consistent. Now I did love some of the additions like to online play and the updated visuals/graphics and feel it could and should have been there from beginning and had they launched game across all platforms as fans and gamers wanted and suggested but they gave excuses and only obviously to resell later and make more money a tactic a lot of the gaming industry is doing and using nowadays and basically getting people to buy same games twice with minor effort and work on their part between the two titles.

Basically nowadays we gamers are paying the same or more to get a lot less then we use to get with any full game and even sometimes being tricked into basically buying same game twice that we could have had in the first place. Nevermind that games are launching stripped down so that they can nickel and dime us content back after launch through microtransactions or season passes. Man are developersbecoming lazy, publishers even greedier, and the B2P model is slowly starting to feel and look like F2P business models what he'll is going on. Just like to add in defens of my comment no statement tha I'm no fanboy and own and play multi-platforms and basically own all last gen and next gen consoles along with more then one gaming Destop and laptop. So my opinion and statement comes from personal experience and playing across more then one platform.

It's not whinning its called criticizing and giving feedback on something that needs to be fixed and people who spend their hard earned money have a right to do and should. In fact developers for most part want feedback and encourage it so that they know what to fix or improve and it's how games get fixed and get better so you should try it sometime. To me whining is when there's nothing broken or wrong and someone just expects and wants something to be the way they like it now that's whinning not this as I'm sure almost everyone here still plays the game regardless of the bug.

if you are crying about weapons durability decreasing saying it make the game "too hard", it seems they missed the point of the game. its meant to be hard and nobody should make it easier.

You obviously missed the interview with Miyazaki and another of the Devs at fromsoftware as they clearly stated the difficulty was never something they meant or even thought would be such a big part and focus of with the games success or that it would define the games and create this whole new sub genre people want and like. As having a great balance between Fun and challenging is just normal with Japanese games both developed or influenced and always has been from early days of nintendo and Sega till now and theses games are and offer a lot more then something hard. Honestly it does become easier once you master it but of course can still become even more challenging if a player wants once you have mastered and gotten past your the first playthrough.. The whole design is great both it its artistic view, atomsphere, way of story telling, how it makes you search for and discover everything for yourself, and along with its balance of both fun and challenge and how it rewards you. I would say souls games are like most classic and typical eastern developed games and basically harder to learn and master but can become easy once your past that. The boss fights are huge and well designed along with a perfect balance of challenge and fun and really rewarding.

Honestly some people love to talk how hard it is just to make themselves feel like they are these part of this elite group and some great gamers on some other level compared to others when in fact the game is and offers a lot more then just a challenge and not as hard as they make it out to be once you learn and master it and if you put the time in and give the game a chance you find all this out. Souls games really are for everyone and meant to offer more then what people think and you find this out if you don't get discouraged early on and get past the early learning and leveling stages then you quickly find out what's really so great about it and how well designed the game is. The game really draws you into it and makes you want to learn, discover, and find everything for yourself and it feels great both to find out its secrets, stories, and treasures it has to offer and answers to all its mystery and the story it has. Just like to add while once you master the game it becomes easier the games AI is still well designed and clever enough to punish you if you get to cocky and forget to play accordly to what you have learned about each enemy.

You my friend are delusional if you really belive that because if it were true they wouldn't spend the time or money to patch it. The dark souls 2 community and platforms effected by it were very aware and vocal about it that's why it got patched.

Sorry for double post but could not edit just wanted to add that it made some rewards and weapons that were hard to find and aquire basically non rewarding or not worth it so you can see how that sucks and why it was a much needed fix as it effects and hurts the games design. As part of what makes the challenge worth it and fun was its rewards you seek and get afterwards at least for most people of course not I'm sure everyone feels same.

It doesn't make it more difficult lol how do you figure there is repair powder, ring to help with durability, and plenty of weapons not heavily effected by the bug that you could use or switch too. It surely made some weapons useless, worthless, and pointless to use so basically more annoying and frustrating then anything but surely just broken not harder.
