New Fable Game Being Developed At Forza Horizon Studio - Report

Would you play a new Fable game?

A new Fable game is in the works at Forza Horizon developer Playground Games, according to a new report. Eurogamer's sources say the new title will be a "story and character-focused open-world action RPG," as opposed to a spin-off such as the multiplayer-centric Fable Legends or motion-controlled Fable: The Journey.

The game is apparently still in the early stages of development at Playground's newly-opened second studio. The company has previously confirmed that it's working on a non-racing open-world game, codenamed Project 2, but until now we had no idea what that might be. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot that the company "does not comment on rumor or speculation."

Now Playing: GS News Update: New Fable Game In Development At Forza Horizon Studio

Regarding the rumors, Fable co-creator Simon Carter told Eurogamer he has "slightly mixed feelings." He continued: "On the one hand it's great for the UK games industry, and very pleasing that Fable isn't dead; indeed, it will be lovely to play one as a punter without coming out in hives.

"On the other hand it is a little curious to get rid of the team that is uniquely expert in making Fable, and then try and make Fable. Fable is a weird game, and a tough one to deconstruct for a new team. That said, the team in question is very talented, and I'm sure they'll do a fantastic job."

Fable was created in 2004 by Peter Molyneux's company, Lionhead, and its sister company Big Blue Box. Each further game in the main series was made by Lionhead until Microsoft closed the developer down in 2016, canceling Fable Legends in the process. Fable has been dormant since, though Microsoft still retains the rights to the series and is therefore free to task other developers with making new entries. Eurogamer's report states Microsoft's desire to revive Fable was in part inspired by Sony's Horizon Zero Dawn and its critical and commercial success.

Playground's last game was 2016's Forza Horizon 3. The company has released a new Forza Horizon title every two years since 2012, and that pattern would suggest a fourth entry in the spin-off series would be due this year. A second team could allow for the development of both a new Forza Horizon title and a new Fable game concurrently, however as yet the company has not officially confirmed either title. The studio's founder, Ralph Fulton, has said Playground would not be abandoning racing games altogether.

"Our business with Forza over the last six, seven years has been great for us," he said in February 2017. "It remains the cornerstone of our business--we're not running away from racing, we still feel passionate about making new racing games and delivering new experiences for our players.

"Horizon 3 was a watershed game for us--it's certainly our best-reviewed game critically, it's our most commercially successful game as well. It's the first time we've experienced that commercial breakout hit phenomenon--the other games have been successful but not on the level of this one. We want to keep doing that. In a way, that game took six years to make. So we want to keep developing that skillset and pushing new boundaries."

Playground Studios developing a Fable game?

Well considering that some of those people were Codemasters developers, who were responsible for the Overlord games, which had a particular style similar to Fable, so aesthetic wise, I think they could pull it off. And Gameplay wise? If they borrow a few notes from their own Forza Horizon games, give it a 'proper' open-world makeover, borrow some elements from recently released games (like another particular game with Horizon in the title) Then maaayybe we can have a comeback on our hands...maaaybe...

Hey, I can dream can't I?

Fable IV or whatever it ends up being will be the only reason I buy an XBONE or the next console if it ends up on the next GEN.

I seriously miss Fable and was so sad when Lionhead closed down....

They never wanted to make Fable Legends to begin with but they still went all in.

I actually love Fable 3 it has great charm especially once you make is to Bowerstone!

Fable 2 in my opinion is a masterpiece to my own criteria haha.

Of course the first game is classic and the remapped controls and updated visuals in Anniversary made me appreciate it all over again.

Anyways I could ramble on forever, I'll rock my Jack of Blades hoodie and pick up the next Fable entry day 1!

In my view

1) Microsoft had lost their faith in Lionhead Studio and Fable Legends after multiple delays so they scrap the game and closed the studio.

2) Playground games were working on the new Fable games after the release on FH3 which is late 2016 with a minimum staff and if they are making it from scratch this game will be in very very early development process.

3) This new Fable game might be coming on next Xbox instead of One as an open world + RPG + story driven game would require at least 4 to 5 years for completion so this game will be coming in late 2020 if it was started in 2016.

4) Don A. Mattrick was really an a****le. He literally f***ed the Xbox by focusing only on Kinect and online services. So now Xbox really need a good, solid and single player focused AAA title and Fable is the only game which CAN BE that ONE.

Hmm. Maybe I'll finally finish Fable 3 then at some point. Fable 3 was a game I liked but always lost motivation to do so and only ever progressed incrementally on and off. If this is Fable 4, then I'll go ahead and finish it.

@moonco: Peter was fantastic as director of Fable, I wish they'd hire him again to do the new one after stepping way for so long. His games always have a very unique feel to them.

With that said, Playground games have proven they can create beautiful worlds to explore and, Horizon 2 more specifically, have proven they can make a decent story. So I'm excited if this is true.

I played the first game on PC and was very disappointed with it. Didn't live up to the hype. Then the second game came out and a PC version was completely ignored. My response to a new one coming out? So what.

@Mirimon78: Retarded statement. BoTW does plenty of shit ES never even thought of.

Just because they are both open world RPG's does not make BoTW a clone. That's where the similarities end, and anyone who has played BoTW knows this.

Honestly, I'm willing to accept the fact that Fable is dead and we should just stop now and appreciate it for what it was. Reviving it now sounds like a bad idea. It has already been spread pretty thin. Not sure how much further they could really stretch this series.

@jayskoon93: I dunno, with some new blood and some years between the last, they could entirely revamp the series.

That said, I do hope they keep the essence of the series. The playful British humor and Good and Evil dynamic was something I really enjoyed about the series.

@thelostscribe: I have no issue with them developing another game that's similar to Fable, but it shouldn't be "Fable." As I said, I feel like Fable has already lived its life and we should not recreate it, but simply draw inspiration from it and create something entirely new that Fable fans would recognize and easily fall in love with.

@jayskoon93: I get what you're saying. It personally feels strange for Lionhead not to be making the game. While in the end, it may only resemble Fable by name, tagging Fable to the name makes it a recognizable system seller for Microsoft. Even with the lackluster reception of Fable 3, Fable is still a very popular name and franchise.

However, it may not be Fable at all, this is all rumor right now. I personally don't think the Fable feel has expired yet, but I have mixed feelings that a different studio can really inject another Fable game with the allure that the original Fable series had. Look at Halo, sure it's got the name and characters, but it's almost entirely different. For me, it's not different in a good way.

I think a Fable game by a different studio has promise. Brings new ideas and maybe they can realize more of the original vision.

I'm kinda on the fence until more info comes out. I bought an OG xbox for the first Fable and a 360 for Fable 2, so I do think there is a very strong incentive to have a first party RPG on the Xbox especially considering the lack of variety in first party xbox games.

That being said, I hope they don't screw it up with forced online components and microtransactions. Fable will also need to step up it's game to run with the genre now. If the game comes out now with a 10 hour run time (first Fable) or a cookie cutter story with tons of padding (fable 2) gamers are going to be disappointed. Still, playground Games could do it if they focus more on things like the combat system instead of Fart emotes.

@rmiller365: I spent plenty of time on Fable 1 and Fable 2, even enjoyed Fable 3, though not as much as 2. I do agree though, it needs to bolster it's content and world.

I do think they need to capture that essence of Fable though, the cheeky British humor and emotes, better implemented and more dynamic of course, while also focusing on the choices the series also let you make. Expanding on these things will make a new Fable game great in my opinion.

While I really enjoyed Peter at the helm and Lionhead's particular feel to games, it'll be great to see what a new developer as capable as Playground Games revamp the series.

@Thanatos2k: Well let's think about it:

A) Playground has experience with open world games

B) Guerilla Games went from making mediocre shooters to an open world RPG

C) When was the last good Lionhead game?

@xenomorphalien: Fable 2 was fantastic in my opinion, Fable 3 was poorly executed, but I enjoyed it personally. Black and White 2 was also a great game. Never played the Kinect Fable, I heard it was neat when Kinect worked properly.

That being said, Playground Games seems more than capable of creating a great open world game. It's also a secondary studio built for the purpose, so I'm sure they hired some people who have experience building a RPG. It is unfortunate to me that Lionhead was closed, they had a unique feel to their games.

@thelostscribe: They did hire some new talent to help with the project.

Unfortunately they hired devs from GTA V, Metal Gear Solid and some ex-Ninja Theory employees.

That’s a lot of open world experience but not much RPG experience.

Why has this taken so long to actually even be considered Microsoft? Fable was the leading RPG exclusive game since the OG Xbox. Legends was a terrible idea that no one wanted and to not even have Fable 4 as backup wasn't too smart. This is one of the best announcements i've heard from Xbox in quite some time. Still crossing my fingers that Crackdown 3 turns out good. The Xbox One is a fine piece of machinery, yall just need to focus on getting some first party titles going and gain more support from Japan.

@meatymisto: I'd have hated to work at Lionhead after Peter left, it seems like the suits waltzed in there and just took over. Peter had a very strong pull with Microsoft, so once he left, it seems like Lionhead were just being thrown around.

The sad part is, had they never announced Fable Legends as Free To Play, I think it could have been a success if released. At first I didn't care for it, but when they started adding more Hero's and seeing the gameplay and graphics, I thought it would probably be pretty fun. Seems like it was just stuck in development limbo for too long. Plus, Microsoft may have lost confidence in them to develop after Fable Legends got twisted up. Still seems like an overreaction though from a fairly successful studio.
