New Far Cry Game Set For The Game Awards Reveal

Want to play with a sawblade gun?

Ubisoft has teased an impending Far Cry announcement for The Game Awards with a short video that hints at a post-apocalyptic theme. Though the brief look doesn't explicitly say the announcement is connected with Far Cry 5 or that it's explicitly Far Cry 6, the setting of this new game or expansion appears similar to be similar to the latest game in the series. Spoilers for Far Cry 5 follow.

The teaser begins with a nuclear explosion over a track of farm land, echoing the ending of Far Cry 5 when the cult leader Joseph Seed was proven right after all. His prophecy came true and the world--or at least a sizable chunk of rural Montana--was obliterated by nukes. The connection suggests this game will follow the events of Far Cry 5.

Now Playing: Far Cry Reveal Teased For Game Awards - GS News Update

The teaser says the world recovered and vegetation regrew, and the survivors thought the threat had passed. But, in an ominous twist, the narration says they were wrong, as we see a figure picking up a sawblade for an apparent makeshift weapon. This would appear to be a post-apocalyptic Far Cry, complete with scrappy survivors.

The brief video doesn't indicate much about whether this will be downloadable content for Far Cry 5, a new standalone spin-off like Blood Dragon, or an entirely new game. Far Cry 5 already had a full season pass of content, complete with zombies, outer space, and Vietnam.

We'll know more tomorrow when the full reveal airs live during The Game Awards. It all kicks off starting at 8:30 PM ET / 5:30 PM PT / 1:30 AM GMT (Friday) / 12:30 PM AET (Friday), and you can watch it right here at GameSpot. While some studios are teasing reveals for The Game Awards, others have stepped forward to say they won't be showing their games. You can follow along with our roundup of all the Game Awards news and announcements.

I just hope they get a better writer than the one who did FC5, being captured every 30 mins to move the story on was total bollocks and the endings weren't much better.

Maybe not the best time to announce this type of game, with the fiasco of Fallout going right now. Many have a bad taste in their mouth right now.

Then again, maybe the disaster of Fallout 76 might pave the way for Far Cry to make a great post apocalyptic game and appeal to the fanbase. Never know.

Badass. Hopefully the really CRAM this one with mandatory timed missions, escort missions and a few hunting missions that rely on rare spawns and drops for little to no reward. Oh, and definitely bring back the gay arcade cabinets that whisk you away to a random shitty user made map full of bots and unlimmited ammo, those were awesome. Keep up the good work Ubisoft.

So it looks like this may take place after the events of the crazy Far Cry 5 ending. That has me intrigued.

As a spin-off, this could work. Blood Dragon and Primal was good in my opinion. Still, im not sure i want to instantly jump into this. See where they are going with this first.

@m4a5: what was great about Blood Dragon, is that they didnt take it dead serious (the tutorial, lol). that spin-off came off as the developers REALLY had fun with that one

No lie I hated the ending of FC5. But it may be that such a horrible ending to a great game may pave the way for something more. That said the mechanics of FC5 are excellent and the map is wonderfully done. Its just a damn shame it was set in Montana (not a hater just would have preferred a more exotic location as the franchise is known for) and filled with completely uninteresting characters you didn't care about at all. I played it when it first came out start to finish. The only name I remember from the game is Clutch Nixon (a single shot of whiskey).

For this one they need to give you a character. Far Cry 3 was still their best installment to the series and I think one of the major reasons for it was you had an actual place in the story. You weren't just a soulless extension of the resistance you were a person. Four was good in that respect as well. Also they should have the way you defeat your foes cause the opposition to change. For example, if you are silently taking outpost after outpost there may be a feel of fear in the next camps. They don't now whats coming but they know something is whereas if your loud and guns a blazing they should fortify and prepare. Perhaps as you are taking the camp someone sees their over run and runs off to tell the boss what he's seen putting importance on leaving none alive. Perhaps you leave one alive and horribly wounded on purpose to tell what he's seen and put the fear in their boss. That way they know about you and can capture you if they figure your position. They should not be able to send capture parties if they do not know you exist. You should also be able to stop said capture party (duh). If done silently the enemy should think they are still hunting and not send more until they know the fate of that party. They need to find a way to incorporate psychological warfare into a game like this. The way you fight changes how they fight you.

@fud_sang: Clutch Nixon lol...... I also vaguely remember the companion that carried the rocket launcher he was pretty funny..... You hit on so many good points...... I didnt really like the fact that being captured and escaping over and over was actually part of the story. I do think its funny that after you have completed the game you still black out anytime you get near the base that has the "only you" song still playing on the loud speakers. I tried flying over it in a plane and woke up on the ground...... WTF happened.

@fud_sang: Well I mean maybe no wants to read paragraphs of text in a comment section and especially one that's seemingly just nonsense and stupidity? Dunno how a simple suggestion of a tl;tr is apparently so incredibly offensive.

This might be interesting... although I wonder if they will just re-use Far Cry 5's map and make it more post-apocalyptic.

@SoNin360: I got a feeling this will be a spin-off ala Blood Dragon & Primal. I wouldnt mind walking around in a post-apocalyptic Montana, i was a bit dissapointed the world didnt change when i completed FC5.

@Pupchu: it didnt change nearly enough as it should have considering...... Strange thing...... after I completed the story I found all my companions hanging out in one spot.... I think it was a Pizza place. It was odd. Like they knew the story was completed so they decided to all hang out.

I guess another Far Cry game in the works (assuming this isn't DLC or a stand alone.) shouldn’t come as a shock to many in the gaming community. After all, this is Ubisoft.

It seems that releasing new installments in a franchise that is a big money maker is a for sure thing from a business standpoint but this kind of practice more often than not lasts for a limited amount of time.

While at first something like this is usually exciting it more than ends up with the same outcome. Gamers becoming jaded and pessimistic towards each subsequent installment. Look at what happened to Assassins Creed.

It wasn’t Ubisoft decided to shelve the franchise for an extra year that it came back with a vengeance and more critical acclaim that it had in years.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this scenario played out in similar fashion for Far Cry but perhaps it might just be what the series needs for it to develop into something greater in the future.

@videogameninja: hopefully it’s good. I’m not holding out too much hope for it, but if anything it’ll be mediocre at best. I loved Far Cry 5 though. Probably their best one since FC3.

@kstaggs87: I've been meaning to get into Far Cry 5 but something else comes along and I never get to it.

I wanted it to be my first Far Cry game thanks to the interesting premise (unfortunately after it dropped all the reviews said the story/narrative was in actuality not that good so :/ ) but many out there keep telling me to start with Far Cry 3.

Not sure if 3 would be a great introduction to see whether I liked the series or not but I'm sure I'll figure it out at some point in the future; although, 2019 is going to wreak havoc on my free time.

-Free time, Ninja? stop lying to us and more importantly to yourself.-

What installment do you recommend first?

@videogameninja: Well, the beauty of Far Cry is that each game is stand alone, so you don't necessarily have to play one to understand the other. That being said...I say start with FC3. That is the series at its best and it'll give you the best idea of what to expect from the series as a whole. I loved it. After that I would recommend getting into FC5 though. It's actually a very good game and the story isn't terrible. I enjoyed it. The map is huge though and there's plenty to do when you're not blowing through the story. Your best bet...buy the FC5 edition that has FC3 included so you can enjoy both!

My free time will be taken up by Resident Evil 2, probably RDR2 since I cant seem to put it down, Destiny 2 will probably squeeze its way back into my life at some point, and if Cyberpunk 2077 happens to release next year...all bets are off...
