New Gollum-Focused LOTR Movie Announced With Peter Jackson And Andy Serkis, Aiming For 2026 Release

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are involved in the movie's production.

During Warner Bros. Discovery's latest earnings briefing, CEO David Zaslav announced that a new Lord of the Rings movie is now in development. It's in the script phase, the executive said. WBD first announced its plans to make more Lord of the Rings movies back in 2023.

In news that may please fans of the series, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens--the architects of the Oscar-winning original trilogy--are involved in the new movie as producers. Details remain scant on the story, but Zaslav said it will tell a tale focused on Gollum within the Lord of the Rings universe.

A press release revealed that the working title for the film is Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Andy Serkis, who famously played Gollum in Jackson's trilogy, is coming back to play Gollum again and direct the film, according to Variety. Previously, Serkis said he would jump at the chance to come back and play Gollum again, and now that is coming true.

The new Lord of the Rings movie will "explore storylines yet to be told," adding that Jackson, Boyens, and Walsh are involved "every step of the way." Zaslav said Lord of the Rings is "one of the most successful and revered" franchises in film history, and he believes there continues to be a "significant opportunity" for the franchises from a theatrical perspective.

Zaslav also mentioned on the call that Lord of the Rings, as well as Harry Potter and DC, are "underused" within the company, which suggests it might be planning to leverage them further in the future. The executive has said the company will focus on its tentpole franchises and sequels going forward.

IGN reported that Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens said in a statement: "It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that Stinker--Gollum! As life long fans of Professor Tolkien's vast mythology, we are proud to be working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy, and the entire team at Warner Bros. on another epic adventure!"

Serkis said in a statement: "The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter, Fran and Philippa. With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros team on the quest as well, alongside WETA and our film making family in New Zealand, it's just all too delicious..."

Warner Bros. Discovery also confirmed that Hunt for Gollum is the first of two upcoming Lord of the Rings movies that are being made in partnership with Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens.

Prior to this, WBD announced a Harry Potter TV series. As for DC, James Gunn and Peter Safran are the new co-heads of DC Studios and have ambitious plans for the future of DC film and TV projects, beginning with a new Superman film in 2025.

LOTR fans don't have to wait until 2026 for a new entry in the film series, though, as an animated LOTR movie, War of the Rohirrim, is coming this December.

The Lord of the Rings movies from Jackson, Boyens, and Walsh earned billions at the box office and won numerous Academy Awards, including Best Picture for Return of the King. Jackson came back to the fantasy universe with a trilogy of Hobbit films. They also made gigantic sums of money at the box office, though these films were not as well received by fans.

This can only work if Gollum serves as the basis to tell the story of other more interesting characters. The LOTR trilogy already fleshed him out enough.

The fact that the original team is back could be a source of optimism, then again the Hobbit trilogy proved they are not immune to cash grabbing (3 movies???) and needless fanservice (Legolas) either.

The hobbit has held up surprisingly well. Some editing would do those films a lot of good though. After watching the show, I actually don’t want anymore middle earth unless Peter Jackson is involved. Serkis is an amazing actor but a gollum movie is a strange choice. Plenty of other stories to explore. Agree that it seems like a cash grab. I just hope they don’t destroy the franchise like Disney destroyed the Star Wars movies.

Let me just say...

Who in their goddamn right mind wants a Gollum-centric anything!? He is not the draw of Lord of the Rings. They shouldn't have made the video game. They shouldn't have started this movie.

I'd rather learn about the tree that nearly killed the Hobbits and have a four season TV show about it than Gollum. We got what we needed from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Better yet, give me a Dragon horror movie where Smaug moves into the Misty Mountain. Or the downfall of Moria.

Anything but Gollum.

Move.

On.

Something like The Lord of the Rings trilogy will never happen again.
That age is over.
Peter Jackson, as great as he could be as director,
will not be allowed to do what he actually wants.
Heck he was barely even allowed to do what he wanted in 1999.
This is a cash grab, just like The Hobbit.
The most detailed fantasty story ever conceived is now nothing more
than a hooker to be dressed up in the gaudiest modern fashions,
and handed to highest bidder to be f***ed then dropped and passed around to the next.

@teshammutna: Doubt it. She's a traditional stay at home mom. She doesn't fit Hollywood's perception of a strong independent female.

Why not just adapt other fantasy books? Mistborn would make an amazing film trilogy.

@traptedmind: Because LOTR is a proven winner and an iconic IP. Adapting something new is risky, especially a fantasy epic. Studios are allergic to risk, more nowadays than 1-2 decades ago.

@Lord_Sesshy: Nice, tidy 20-second movie.

"Any sign of Gollum?"

"Consumed by the lava, sir."

"Very good. Let's go home."

It'll be six hours of Peter Jackson playing the Gollum video game broken into a three film trilogy with an unrelated battle between dwarfs, elves, orcs and goblins crossing paths on their way to a LOTR cosplay convention.

Part of what makes this character interesting is the mystery around him, which is appropriately dispelled in the course of the story.

This isn't even some Anakin Skywalker type who in theory could have an interesting story ( ... side note I actually like the prequels, but they fumbled his character pretty bad until sort of the 3rd one but not really).

He just isn't an interesting character beyond his role in Hobbit/LotR.

Peter Jackson: why? After you lived through the studio forcing The Hobbit into a trilogy, you've bought off on this now. "The Hunt for Gollum" - seriously. Is this going to be about the Nazgul hunting him or his hunt for the Ring? We don't need to see either of these spelled out/dumbed down for us in 3.5 hour movie. Plus the Gollum focused video game tanked hard. The market isn't there.

Didn't ask for, and don't want. Not even remotely interested, with or without Peter Jackson at the helm.

One day, companies will realize that there is to much of a good thing. That you can kill your IP by over milking it.

I like how we're all pretending that we like this character enough for a movie about him.

Which knowing Middle Earth films, is probably going to be 3 hours and 48 minutes minimum,

More Gollum?

Also, unless he has full creative control, I don't see a point in being excited for this, in this day and age...
