New HBO Max Price, Release Date, Content, 4K Paywall, And Everything Else You Need To Know

From Guy Fieri to The Lord of the Rings, the new streaming service Max probably has something you're interested in.

Max, the newly rebranded version of HBO Max, is now available. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the updated streaming service in April, and while Max is suffering from some launch-day issues, you may be able to access it, depending on your platform of choice.

Whether you're wondering about how much it costs, what happens to your existing HBO Max subscription, what shows and movies you can expect to find on it, or something else, we've rounded up all of the key information about Max

Goodbye HBO Max, Hello Max

HBO Max will officially become "Max" when it launches in the US on May 23, 2023. It's described as a single-stop destination for content from across the WB and Discovery pipelines, following the merger of the two media giants in 2022.

It's different from HBO Max because it combines both WB content and Discovery content, so viewers can watch an episode of Game of Thrones and follow it up with the pure joy of watching Guy Fieri eat a lot of food the next. WB Discovery is promising improved performance, smarter recommendations, and new hubs within the next Max streaming service. Here's a trailer:

What Does It Cost?

Max will be available in three tiers, starting at $10/month for an ad-based model and scaling to $20/month for an "Ultimate" package that comes with the highest-quality video and audio, as well as the most concurrent streams. In short, the ability to stream 4K is getting more expensive than before because it will be locked behind the most expensive tier.

Here is a breakdown of the offerings:

Max Ad-Lite

  • $10/month or $100/year
  • 2 concurrent streams, 1080p resolution, no offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality

Max Ad-Free

  • $16/month or $150/year
  • 2 concurrent streams, 1080 resolution, 30 offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality

Max Ultimate Ad-Free

  • $20/month or $200/year
  • 4 concurrent streams, up to 4K UHD resolution, 100 offline downloads, Dolby Atmos sound quality

What Happens For Existing HBO Max Subscribers?

Anyone who currently holds an HBO Max subscription will be able to use Max at the same price as their existing HBO Max membership, which is $10/month with ads or $16/month without ads. Existing subscribers to HBO Max do not need to do anything. The HBO Max app will become Max on May 23. On that day, users who have HBO Max installed on their device will see it automatically update to become Max or they will be prompted to download the Max app.

WB Discovery also confirmed that HBO Max subscribers will continue to have access to existing plan features "for a minimum of six months" following Max's launch on May 23.

All existing profiles, settings, watch history, and lists from current HBO Max plans will migrate to Max at launch. WB Discovery will send existing HBO Max subscribers an email soon with more details on Max and the transition.

Get ready for Max

What About Discovery+ Subscribers?

Anyone currently subscribed to Discovery+ will have the opportunity to continue using that app as a standalone service. Alternatively, they can sign up for Max.

Where Is Max Available And On What Devices?

Max will be supported on phones, tablets, computers, TVs, set-top boxes, and gaming consoles, though a specific list of supported devices was not announced. In terms of geographic availability, WB Discovery has only announced Max for the United States at this stage.

What Can I Watch?

Members can watch HBO's iconic shows like Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, and The Sopranos, as well as WB moves like The Lord of the Rings and The Departed. The library of DC Universe films and TV series are included as well, as are the Harry Potter films. Max will also include Discovery's content, including shows from HGTV, Food Network, TLC, and Discovery Channel. The full list of HBO Max content is available on the streamer's website, but whether or not every last TV show and movie makes it to Max remains to be seen. Keep checking back for more.

WB Discovery is promising an average of 40 new titles and seasons each month to keep the catalog feeling fresh.

Some of the upcoming brand-new content for Max will include a new Harry Potter TV series, a new Game of Thrones prequel called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, and a new Big Bang Theory TV show. There will also be a new Conjuring TV series and Rick and Morty: The Anime.

New Features And Paywalls

WB Discovery says Max will have new "premium video playback" that aims to offer a "smooth and cinematic video" experience. This is notable since members have complained about the video quality and smoothness of HBO Max over the years.

The company also said it has "significantly" increased its investment in the machine learning space to help users discover new content. It's not just AI that is doing this, though, as WB Discovery said Max will maintain an "editorial voice" as part of its blend of "unique human and machine approach" to surface the kind of content people want to see. Only time will tell if this actually works, though.

Additionally, Max will have a new kids profile option and parental control settings. With the parental controls, parents can limit the kind of content available to youngsters by choosing from the following: little kids (TV-Y), big kids (TV-Y7, TVY7-FV), big kids plus (TV-G, G), preteens (TV-PG/PG), or teens (TV-14, PG-13). Additionally, parents can set profile PINs to lock their adult profiles.

What's more, Max will have a simplified navigation system that aims do the heavy lifting "so viewers don't have to." Members can expect streamlined categories, better content detail pages, shortcuts, and dedicated brand hubs.

Finally, Max will offer 4K UHD, but only at the most-expensive subscription tier. People who sign up for the $20/month Ultimate Ad-Free tier can watch supported content in 4K UHD. WB Discovery said all WB theatrical movies released in 2023 and going forward will be available in 4K UHD when they come to Max after their run in theaters.

More details on Max will be announced in the weeks to come, so keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

I have no problem paying $20 a month for great content, with tons of movies, and originals (new and old). But ,... GoT is over, and while HBO puts out some decent series they have not been the Emmy leader for a while. I would pay $20 a month for Chernobyl alone. But, there hasn't been anything like it in years. Warner brother content is ... lackluster, to be nice. And an infusion of reality TV, is not up my alley.

But the hundred and hundred of hours a streaming service provides at 4k hdr without commercials is worth it to me as I paid $300 cable bills 20 yrs ago for my family. $20 is a steal..... that is if the content is valuable enough to be worth it. I will hold off on Max until the content is richer , that is my choice as a consumer, and I have no such thing as FOMO.

I like prime, and Netflix, and pay for them. My wife pays for hulu and disney... though no one hardly watches it. I abuse the shit out of PLEX and have some servers with all the content I could possibly want, but rarely have time to watch.

Take prime that is $140ish a year. Free shipping and deals. One of the largest libraries of video content, access to tons of books, music, comics, services, and much much more with subscriptions. Like you can even watch the paid site HiDive free,-with same day anime, great quality streams with prime. With FreeBe or IMDB you have tons of content with short commercials and many without. That is well worth the price, but HBOmax... the price per performance is not there for me, so as a consumer... not right for me.

Well, I don't have a lot of time for TV and I have a 1 year subscription with HBO MAX that expires in December. It was a good value at the time and it included 4k. I will check tonite, since i'm not in the top tier, to see if 4k atmos is still there.

Having said that, come year's end, the subscription ends and i will not renew it.

There's no content that's gonna make me pay $200 for the year. Especially not crap from HGTV, Lifetime, Food Network etc.

It's a pity really, but it seems all good things come to an end.

I like the service today. There's a lot of back catalogue from HBO. Discovery adds nothing of value to the mix.

20? That's a big lmao! People see that price tag so high and immediately think I'm going back to pirating this shi? again.

The only ones who will benefit from this high price is Amazon. People will be buying Amazon Firestick left and right, just to hack and watch pirating content for free.

If I had money to burn id bet that this max change will get reversed in less than a year after max underperforms; such a stupid move made by C level executives. I rarely enjoy even half of the lineup of content available on hbomax, it might be worth it to just buy the shows I want on disc or digital platforms like prime (if available).

Lol a 4k paywall? What year is this? Also for such premium shows that have the lowest quality streaming. This doesn't make sense.

@jch123: the same as Netflix, which has been the only one with this nonsense all this time. Others will follow suit, I bet.

And there goes the only streaming service that I actually liked for the value. I'm about to have to cancel all of these and go back to pirating because I'm sick of paying these absurd prices just because they lump in a bunch of content I don't have any interest in.

Ruined HBO , all they had to do was leave It alone , we didn't even need HBO Max.

This Is what I feel will happen to game services In the future like Gamepass and PS+.

It's not HBO. It's just regular-ass TV.

Why not pay more money for a service that dropped Raised by Wolves and Westworld so we can watch more lobotomized reality TV?

" watch an episode of Game of Thrones and follow it up with the pure joy of watching Guy Fieri"

How many people do that? I have zero interest in anything Discovery. Now I'm being asked to pay more to have access to it

I'm canceling my subscription. I use HBO Max to watch mostly animated shows, but they canceled or removed nearly all their good ones like Young Justice, Infinity Train, Close Enough, Justice League/JLU, and Summer Camp Island but greenlight trash like Mindy Kaling's Velma.

Their 4k lineup is also a joke, they hardly have any 4k, HDR, and Dolby atmos content. Not even all recent Warner Bros and HBO Originals have any of these features. FFS DC Universe had 4k HDR content years before HBO Max came out and when it was shutdown and moved over to HBO Max none of the shows were in 4k or HDR. A lot of modern movies I see on HBO Max get those features when they appear on the subscriptions of other streaming services such as Prime Video, Paramount+ and Netflix.

HBO offers next to no 4K content and they want to start charging people extra for something they’ve been getting for no extra charge this whole time. You can look up a list of every 4K movie and show on their site. The last time I checked — about a month ago — I think I remember counting 34 4K titles. That’s pathetic. And they’re going to lock that behind a higher tier, when we were already getting those titles? That’s some sound logic. Before this, only Netflix charged extra for 4K, which is also some bull****. Paramount+, Prime Video and even Hulu don’t charge extra for 4K. Hulu even has more 4K content. Lol. Aside from their good original shows, HBO, as a service, sucks ass.

What's the logic behind dropping "HBO" - one of, if not the most popular, long-running 3-letter names in premium channel history?

Now it's just a generic name that's shared by a smartphone and some other tech or subscription tier.

@maralzo: My guess is because of the discovery buyout, removing HBO lets people associate all the new content with MAX. You would have to otherwise explain that HBO now has cooking content, animal shows, etc. Probably cheaper to launch it as something new than to educate viewers.

@maralzo: funny, I signed in just so I could leave the exact same comment you left.
... what an odd decision on their part, to drop the acronym HBO from their streaming service name for something completely nondescript like 'max'
lame!
it's like if Harley Davidson came out with a statement saying that as of July, they'll just be known as David.

@maralzo: I agree. This is a baffling move. HBO is a much more recognizable name than Max. It already has a built-in large following. Not to mention, it has won hundreds of awards under the HBO banner in the last 3 decades.

What a joke, HBO's 4k offerings lag well behind their competitors and they want to charge more for it as well? Have had it with them, won't be renewing my yearly subscription as all the shows I liked are going away and it's just not worth it anymore.

I live in Trinidad, where HBO Max is available, but Discovery is not. Like you'd have to use a VPN to watch it. So not sure what this merger will mean.

"In terms of geographic availability, WB Discovery has only announced Max for the United States at this stage."

Dunno if they'll leave some kind of deal for us outsiders where it leaves out Discovery, or maybe we won't be able to get it anymore at all.
