New Labyrinth Movie Not a Remake or Reboot, Writer Says
"I would never seek to profit from Bowie's death."
The upcoming Labyrinth movie is not a reboot or a remake of the 1986 original that starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. That's according to the film's writer Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), who also said in a series of tweets that discussions for the new film began in late 2014, before Bowie's passing.
"I would never seek to profit from Bowie's death," Perlman said, adding that Labyrinth was one of her favorite films as a child. It is "perfect as it is," she went on to say.
The original Labyrinth was directed by Jim Henson and produced by Star Wars creator George Lucas.
There is no official word yet on what direction the new Labyrinth movie may take or when it might be released, though Perlman assures it will be "handled with love and respect." Entertainment Weekly reports that the film will be a sequel, not a reboot.
Labyrinth was not a box office hit, which partially attributed to Henson's decision to stop making movies. However, in the years after its release, the fantasy film gathered steam and is now considered a cult classic.
Bowie died aged 69 on January 10 after a battle with liver cancer.
Not "rebooting" anything, guys.

Henson Co & I started talking in late 2014, so the timing of these rumors is so upsetting. I would never seek to profit from Bowie's death.

Labyrinth is my favorite film from childhood, so I share your concerns that any continuation of the world be handled with love and respect.

Guys, please don't fall for all the clickbait. No one is remaking "Labyrinth." That movie is perfect as it is.
