New Look At Hellblade 2 Reveals Photorealistic Facial Animation

These facial animations look Unreal.

Developer Ninja Theory has revealed another quick look at Senua's Saga: Helblade II, with the studio's latest video focusing on impressive facial animations. Shown at the Game Developer's Conference, Ninja Theory's use of Unreal Engine 5 has allowed the studio to render more nuanced and subtle facial movements from Melissa Juergens, the performance capture artist for Senua.

This demo of the technology includes overt acting as the actress declares that she'll be committing deicide, as well as more subtle motions and movements from Juergens. While Ninja Theory has used a lot of advanced technology to dial up the realism of its Hellblade sequel, the studio has also opted for more low-tech solutions, including a homemade contraption that incorporated a toilet plunger into its design. You'll also want to avoid leaving clothing around the developers, as they've taken a blowtorch to apparel to see what materials look like after they've been burnt.

Ninja Theory has been hard at work on Hellblade II since it was announced in 2019, with one of the more recent gameplay trailers being released back at the 2021 Game Awards. That video showed Senua working alongside a group of warriors to take down a giant beast and it has been confirmed that the game will take place in Iceland. A release date has not yet been announced.

Unreal Engine 5 has quickly become one of the more popular engines for game development since it was first announced, and several high-profile games will be made using the toolset. The list so far includes The Witcher remake, Dragon Quest XII: Flames of Fate, and Layers of Fear, among others.

Crazy, but still hasn't made that bridge across the uncanny valley.

The first one is one of the most unique gaming experiences I've had, visually/auditorily it's a masterpiece. At first I was a little impatient with the slow pace of the game play but as you settle into that and just let it take you on that journey it's like nothing else. I remember feeling exhausted, like it takes an emotional toll playing, very psychological. Also with the voices after certain stretches of playing and being immersed you forget yourself and start feeling like the voices are in your own head. (Wait...)

Hellblade 2 is visually/graphically the most impressive game to date. I just hope the gameplay can live up to the best in class visuals.

So many times the audio doesn't match up with facial animations. I have been noticing it in God of War and in this video. Is it just me?

@spoochy: It matched up for me on this one. She does some extra movements with her upper lip before saying some things, but that’s not mismatched lip syncing. It’s just extra mouth movement while getting ready to say something.

I didn’t notice any of that on God of War, either, but it definitely happened with Hogwarts Legacy on the higher framerates. At least on console. I checked it on the 30fps mode and everything matched up, but on the other modes, some of the mouth movements didn’t match up.

@spoochy: I thought it looked just a hair off as well. Something about the upper lip seemed strange. Still very impressive though.

@Hoogovens: She just moved her upper lip a little more while getting ready to say something. Some people have little quirks like that. The actual speech matched up perfectly.

Another game that is nothing than an illusion to give you an impression that its coming soon, but in reality, this is yet another 2030 title from MS. All these years of development, and they haven't shown anything but the fake gameplay years ago.

Anyone think we'll actually see this game this year? I have serious doubts.

Looks great though!
