New Mass Effect Games Are Coming, BioWare Insists

The developer says it is "definitely not done" working on Mass Effect.

In 2017, following the tepid reception to Mass Effect: Andromeda, a report said that the Mass Effect franchise was put on ice. That may be the case, but now a pair of BioWare higher-ups have spoken about their eagerness to make more Mass Effect games ... someday.

Mark Darrah, the executive producer Anthem and the Dragon Age series, told Polygon that BioWare is "definitely not done with Mass Effect."

Now Playing: Mass Effect: Andromeda Review

He said the Mass Effect universe is ripe with storytelling opportunities. "We could pull on the threads we put down with Andromeda; we could pull on threads from Mass Effect 3. There's a lot of interesting space to be explored."

BioWare general manager Casey Hudson is also quoted in the piece. He said the Mass Effect franchise is "very much alive."

"I'm thinking all the time about things that I think will be great. It's just a matter of getting back to it as soon as we can," he said.

BioWare producer Michael Gamble weighed in on Twitter, saying BioWare is "of course" not finished making more Mass Effect games.

Sources told Kotaku in 2017 that BioWare is giving the Mass Effect franchise a rest instead of getting to work right away on another game to follow Andromeda. That title was the first that BioWare Montreal served as lead developer on; the developer previously acted as a support studio for other BioWare projects.

BioWare's next big game is the multiplayer shooter Anthem, which launches later this month for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The studio is also working on a new Dragon Age game, and the first teaser can be seen here.

Today's problem is in ALL games. Publishers are the cause for all the bads. They are just plain greedy (and stupid as well). They don't care a game is not ready etc, they want it out even it is half-baked. They don't know idiots that they are just digging their graves.

Bioware should give everyone that paid for Andromeda the DLC they talked about when game came out. I paid $99 for Andromeda and I enjoy the game. They could do a mission to find the Keelah Siyalh. I did not buy Anthem after what Bioware/ EA did to Andromeda.

They rushed mass effect instead of taking there time going over the original three games n improving n some factors could have stayed the same. All three games should still tie into eachother n over dont rush. I mean look what happened w red dead redemption. They took their time pushed the game back severeal times before they released it. If you arent guna do your full homework n take the project serious dont release it. Youll ruin your reputation n drag thd series thru the mud. Mass effect was one of biowares best ever games. Back then... they took it serious. Idk what this crap is. Besides a half ass job

i thought Anthem flopped pretty hard. I think Bioware's days are numbered. EA is brutal and nasty to developers, they fire people without hesitation and will close them first chance they get if it'll save them a few bucks.

I loved Andromeda. And I am alone in this.

I desperately hope they finish the story. I'll be so upset if they don't finish it, and then just jump back to Shephard and Garrus like some stupid prequel spin-off.

I know a lot of people judge Andromeda by the release date version which is fine. I've learned my lesson long before it to not bother with games at launch and it looked kind of crap to begin with so I sat it out. I gave Andromeda a try after it received an X1X patch and I have to say, it's actually a really good game. It still has some of the issues it was criticized for at launch, especially when it comes to animations, but I'm nearing the end and I enjoyed it way more than ME 1 and 3. Maybe it's not as good as 2 but it's definitely a good ME. People do forget that ME3 had the same issues as Andromeda and it wasn't even fundamentally a good game either.

Yeah, I bet after Anthem doesn't get the sucess they've been expecting either they might finally realize that they should stick with that they're good at. Or used to be at least. Don't know how many of the folks that made the original trilogy are still left at Bioware today. But I'm sure ME:A will just be completely forgotten. I doubt they'd release a sequel to that game. Best to just start over after that trainwreck.

Bioware is a shell of their former selves and andromeda was a mess. They're never going to reach the bar that the original trilogy set so why even bother staining the franchise further?

@illusivepickledonionman: It's already dead at this point. They could hardly make it any worse now. But they're struggling to get back to the good old times and probably struggling to stay alive. If they keep releasing failures EA will shut them down sooner or later, so of course going back to your old successful franchises is the obvious move in such a situation.

They should not have killed Shepard in ME3. Keeping him around for future unspoken versions would not have been such a bad thing since everyone loved Shepard. That was crazy. Then assume the weak characters in Andromeda could carry the show. We all saw how that went.

Andromeda 2: Even Better Facial Animations.

Am I being unreasonable when I say, make a ME-style trilogy but in the Star Wars universe that they conveniently have an exclusive license to but haven't done anything with?

They could make a comeback with the series (ME1 was rough and then vastly improved in ME2), but I don't have high hopes. The forcefulness of adding multiplayer content and ways to continously monitize the game (lootboxes?) will end up ruining any future chance the game has. It is controlled by EA afterall.

If they strictly make it a single player game with no lootboxes or additional purchases (I know this will never happen) then maybe there could be an improvement over MEA.

@lion2447: Keep playing the single player part and let everyone else enjoy the MP mode. It was a great addition to the games and I and many others loved it. If you never even played it then why would you be concerned with the loot boxes in it? Are you complaining just for the sake of it?

@Atzenkiller: I will keep playing single player mode. I enjoy the story content in the games. My problem was in ME3 where you were required to play multiplayer in order to get the better story content in the single player mode. I don't mind there being multiplayer content, but it should not affect the single player side. It amounts to punishing the player for not playing multiplayer. Luckily, there were modders out there that created save mods, where the point system could be modified.

As for loot boxes, I don't complain for the sake of it, I genuinely hate them. They are there to provide the least amount of enjoyment for the player, but produce the most profit for the company. They are very one sided.

Lootboxes are designed with psychological aspects in order to ensure the player spends more than neccessary to obtain any item in the game. Companies will hire psychologists and people with PhD's in human addicition in order to understand how to make lootboxes more effective. It's one thing to have a random system, it's another to have a system very carefully designed to trigger addiction.

I wasn't too concerned when they were part of free (freemium) models as it is pretty clear the companies need to make money somehow; but, now lootboxes have wormed their way into full priced games. The entire system is designed around buying constant content in order to progress in the game.

Battlefront II was a perfect example of the system going to far. It was so lopsided that trying to play without spending additional was almost pointless. It was proven when EA temporary suspended the ingame currency and people realized how much of a grind it would be to get items in the game. Unfortunately, all this did was show game companies where the line was where people would no longer take it. Now they know better how to cheat the player without being too suspicious.

@lion2447: You were never forced to play ME3's mp mode at all. I guess EA and Bioware did a shitty job at making that clear, but the last time I played through ME3 I didn't touch the mp mode until I was done with the campaign. And I got the readiness rating or whatever it was up to the max through they website for the game where you can play some shitty minigame, if you can even call it that. But yeah, do that a few times per day for 2 or 3 days (only takes a couple seconds) and it'll be as if you've played the mp mode for hours.

And I've played the mp mode of ME3 for some time and never payed even a cent for it. Loot boxes are only an issue if the devs put grindy mechanics in place to try and force people to pay money for them. Or when they give you an advantage over those who don't want to pay, but since you've mentioned Battlefront 2: is it really an issue if some guys unlock some gear earlier by paying money for it? How long would it take to unlock the specific stuff you want the normal way for someone who really cares about this game and spends significant amounts of time playing it? And how does it matter if someone's a little ahead of you for a week or two? Are you some pro gamer whose career depends on keeping up with everyone from the first day? If you play a game for months then surely this stuff doesn't make any difference whatsoever in the long term. But people are insecure and feel threatened if they see others have something they don't yet, and even more so if they payed for it.

So it's still a shitty business practice, but this whole topic is also way overblown. And ME3's mp mode was a coop mode, so the gear other players might unlock faster with real money didn't affect you in any way. Only your insecurities at best.

@Atzenkiller: You are correct to say I was never forced to play multiplayer, but it doesn't change the fact that it had an affect on single player. If the campaign is set up as single player, then that is what it should be, regardless of multiplayer being forced or not.

I think one thing I didn't make clear was that I do enjoy playing multiplayer games. But, at the same time, I also enjoy playing single player games. A single player game that gets muddied with online components and multiplayer aspects is no longer a single player game and shouldn't be advertised as such.

"...is it really an issue if some guys unlock some gear earlier by paying money for it? How long would it take to unlock the specific stuff you want the normal way for someone who really cares about this game and spends significant amounts of time playing it?"

For your first question I would say no. Though your changing what I said in my earlier comment. I never mentioned about paying for additional content as being the problem (additional note at the bottom of my comment.) My problem is taking the additional content and placing it behind a randomizer or lootbox. If I pay for something I want to know what I get before putting money down. I don't pay for the "chance" I'll get what I want.

I look at it as going to a grocery store and paying money to the cashier first. They then load my cart up with a bunch of food at random. I may get some things that I want, but other items will most likely be wasted. It not a fair system as I end up getting less wanted items than I paid for, but good for the store as they know I will most likely be back to try again.

For your second question, it is a lot more time to unlock stuff then in earlier games, but not long enough to trigger fustration. Again, as in my earlier comment, it plays into the psychology of how the human brain works and its pleasure and satisfaction centres. Lootboxes also play into this as giving smaller chances of getting stuff at common intervals hides the grinding of the game. People see continual "prizes" coming at them in short intervals and lose track of the additional grinding required to achieve the actual items they want. Comparing against older games, grinding has increased, it just developers have found ways to hide it better. Not to say it's all bad as any hiding of grinding would make a game feel more enjoyable. It's just too bad it's done for purposes of profit over player enjoyment.

"Only your insecurities at best"

Absolutely, but not just me. The lootbox system is designed to play into everyones insecurities, but moreso younger players. They have not learned to develop restraint or understand how to deal with those insecurities, so hooking them is easier. Also, once they are hooked they don't see it as a problem because they did not grow up playing games that did not have these systems.

So to summarize (as I am a longwinded person. lol.,) I don't mind purchasing additional content/items. If it extends the game and keeps it enjoyable then all the best. It also allows me to support companies that put out good games. However, lootboxes or any randomization systems that are there to purposely get me into a game of trying over and over to buy what I want I do not like in the least.

Note: Where I mentioned in my very first comment about "additional purchases" I should clarify I mean additional purchases that don't help the game in any way and are just there to try a hook people into scummy purchases. Best examples would be Deus Ex introducing consumable purchased items for single player that would need to be purchased again for additional playthroughs. Or Metal Gear survive charging for a save slot. These are scummy money grab additional purchases that I am very much against.

I'm apprehensive about this.

ME existed in a world where investors didnt torpedo you for making a successful game because it didnt focus on loot boxes and constant monetization.

I want ME back only if its design resembles the trilogy AND the writing isnt as God awful as Andromeda. I'm not confident Bioware is capable of that anymore.

As much as I'd love to see a continuation of the original trilogy (even Andromeda), I find it very hard to get my hopes up. The only things that that matter now are "social focused" as well as imposing political ideologies where we end up beaten over the head with a flurry of "ism's" or "phobia's" if we so much as question it. The "new way of storytelling" we keep hearing about is nothing but "live service" (i.e, watered down, online only) crap where they'll drip feed content over months or years instead of quality single player experiences that made Bioware so great.

@Runeweaver: So what is the optimal result here? I don't want more Destiny-style "repeat, grind, repeat the same thing over and over and over again to get the right drop", loot boxes or similar, while I'm craving high quality single player story driven content.

If Anthem is a huge success, people buy loot boxes and people don't care about stories, they'll focus on that.

@teg: I think the optimal result is Anthem fails and EA sells Bioware to Microsoft and hopefully they put the money and time into it getting it back to ME 1 and 2 days again.

And before anyone thinks I'm a MS fanboy I'm not I don't even own a Xbox this gen, But MS is out buying developers at the moment and are aiming at releasing alot of exclusives next gen so they are just the most likely to buy it.

@Runeweaver: Never ever understood why Microsoft failed to snatch them up when Mass Effect one exclusively launched for Xbox 360. I remember reading they were in the market to get bought by a larger studio and then EA snagged em. I always felt that was a big loss for MS, but then again you never know if Bioware would have survived the opening era of Xbox One. Who could have ever imagined MS closing Lionhead Studios after one bad project? I didn't.

The new outlook for Xbox Game Studio's though, I wouldn't mind MS buying them up at this point.

Mass Effect is still the most well designed and fully realized sci-fi setting in the entire video game industry, by a long shot, and I would argue in cinema as well. They'd better not be done with it.

Please just stop. The game's haven't been good since ME2 and I didn't even enjoy that one as much as the first. ME3 ruined the OT with a terrible ending and MEA was garbage. There's nowhere to go with the series. What threat could the galaxy face that would be bigger than complete destruction by giant robots millions of years old? Bioware doesn't even make rpg's anymore. Now they do competitive shooters, right? Most of the people that made the old Bioware games special are long gone anyway. Anthem will fail and EA will shutter them and bury their IP's long before we ever see another Mass Effect anything and even then it will probably just be some FTP Battle Royale game.

@teg: No, these people were promised a personalized ending (like the characters and story were leading up to it) and only got A, B, or C.

The old writer even admitted that it was a dumb ending that shouldn't have happened.

But hey, apparently you're fine with dumbing down the ME story so you can choose your favorite color at the end lol

@m4a5: Rather, I saw small results of what I've done previously in both games throughout the story. The end was just that... an end. The journey through all three games was what made the time spent with them so memorable.

@teg: The fact that they patched in slightly better endings shows that they know they effed up.

This isn't about the journey to the end, as that's not the problem. I loved all 3 games... up until that god-child ending.
That wasn't Mass Effect. That wasn't on par with a Bioware story. It was just some cheap-to-implement cap that didn't deliver a satisfying conclusion.

I could care less if it would've been happy or sad. It failed the story when it gave that ending, especially compared to what led up to it.

I don't trust BioWare anymore. I will no longer spend $60 to be preached at and I don't know if I trust the current crop at BioWare to carry on Mass Effect or the Dragon Age franchise any longer. I have never completed DAI, unlike my hundreds of playthroughs on DAO and DA2. And ME:A was such a cluster that I pretend it never happened to keep myself sane. Do I want them to touch Mass Effect again? No. Not when they don't put out games with strong stories or characters and continue to put out games with bugs that become memes. BioWare has become part of the ideological left (perhaps they were always there, but they were willing to allow different perspectives) and don't care about the core audience (guys and the women who love them, honestly) that play their games. I said goodbye to BioWare after the mess that was Andromeda, the Mass Effect-killer that is Anthem, and the still-identity-politics-laden Dragon Age franchise. I'm watching CD Projekt Red now--they're getting the money I would have gladly given BioWare just a few years ago. And the idea of paying extra for early access or preordering is gone forever from me and mine. I wish BioWare well and I hope I'm wrong. I hope they course-correct back to a point where I can trust them again. But so long as they pander to SJWs and ignore the core base that played the games over and over again even when there was no new content then I hold out less hope than ever.

@svega1974: i don't like SJW crap either. I want games to be unfiltered and fun. Not filled with a few peoples political beliefs they want to push down peoples throats.

I'm all for equal rights and such but i also don't want to pay 60+ dollars for a game just to be preached at instead of just having a game thats fun and filled with lots of floppy boobies everywhere.

@svega1974 You had me until the term SJW. Grow up. The games being garbage have nothing to do with people not liking racism, homophobia, and sexism. You're just a parrot of talk radio propaganda and it's pathetic.:

@loveblanket: No, what's pathetic is that this nonsense is being pushed into your face repeatedly for no purpose other than virtue signaling that BioWare is so progressive. Do I care that Krem is trans? No, because Krem is a great character. Krem is Krem--I don't care if the character is male or female because the character is more than just that. Do I need to have Iron Bull pontificate on trans people? No. Or in Mass Effect Andromeda where a trans character just suddenly rolls out their old name and identity and then tells you all about her life as a trans person. Because the character has no real identity other than as a placeholder for a trans person. Do I love Steve in Mass Effect 3? Yes! If he'd been bi, he would have been my toon's second favorite romance. As it is, if I ever do a male character in Mass Effect, he's romancing Steve. The simple fact is that BioWare used to make games that were about great characters. They've stopped doing that. And until that becomes their focus again, there's no point to paying attention to anything coming out of BioWare.

They'll have to pull a Capcom if they want to save the franchise. Actually put heart and care into the next one.
