New Matrix Movie Announced With World War Z Writer

Drew Goddard pitched a "new idea" for the next Matrix movie.

Warner Bros. has announced a new Matrix movie. Drew Goddard, the writer behind World War Z and The Martian, has been hired to direct the new Matrix film. This will be Goddard's third directorial project, following The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale.

Lana Wachowski, one of the creators of the series, is involved as an executive producer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lilly Wachowski is not involved. Lana directed the latest movie, The Matrix: Resurrections.

Warner Bros. boss Jesse Ehrman said Goddard came to the movie studio with a "new idea" that the studio believes could be an "incredible way to continue the Matrix world." It will respect the franchise's legacy and also offer a "unique perspective" on the franchise's future, Ehrman said.

Resurrections was a head-scratcher for many, with a plot some said was incomprehensible and sequences that lampooned the franchise in general. It'll be interesting to see where the new movie goes in terms of story and tone.

"It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life," Goddard said. "Lana and Lilly's exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world."

Resurrections earned $157 million worldwide at the box office in 2021, though it should be noted it was released simultaneously for Max (then known as HBO Max) due to the pandemic. The series debuted in 1999 and saw sequels Reloaded and Revolutions in 2003, just months apart.

The series helped propel Keanu Reeves to a new level of fame, and it also starred Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne. Whether or not any of the original cast will come back for the new Matrix film is unknown.

Warner Bros. announcing a new Matrix movie is no big surprise. After all, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has said the company is narrowing in on its biggest and best-known properties as it focuses on tentpole franchises in the future. WBD is also making a new Harry Potter TV series and more Lord of the Rings films, among others.

That last one was soooo bad. It was somehow worse than the third one. People who say, “This can’t be worse than the last one” need to keep that in mind.

Ahem, the writer behind World War Z was Max Brooks, who wrote the book which is MUCH better than the movie.

Just sayin'.

@olddadgamer: Max Brooks has neither a screenplay nor story credit on the World War Z movie. The movie was merely "inspired by" his book, so it's not wrong to credit the movie's actual writers which include Goddard

@olddadgamer: Anyone can clearly see GameSpot and IGN are peasants in original reporting and only report on at least second-hand information from other outlets for clicks. Not well at all, either. At least, this article links to their source that clearly lists Goddard as the writer-director whose credits include said movies.

TL;DR: GameSpot once again copied somebody's homework and got caught red-handed.

Zaslav is a worthless twat. Doesn't give a shit about improving Warner, just wants to burn it all down to maximize short-term shareholder profits.

@maltnut: Indeed, that is exactly what he promised WB board, and investors.

Zaslav is the king of reality tv. Honey boo boo, naked and, short people, amish mafia, etc etc for TLC, History, discovery, etc.. He lobbied the directors he would gut the venerable Warner Bros (100 yr old studio), and honey boo the shit out of it.

He killed over dozens of IPs for the corporate tax breaks. (a 2002 tax code that allowed corporations to write off 'property or equipment'- mostly for oil rigs, gas lines, etc that are destroyed by natural disasters) That code has mutated since, now WB is claiming their IP is under that code. Allowing them to write off property for a sweet corporate tax break for share holders, and ceos.

His next plan is to reality tv CW or what is left of it. Movies will be fluff, or stuff like Fast and Furious. High value properties like Harry Potter, Batman, and more will be licensed to death with no care of its integrity. HP tv series on ION tv, for instance.

It has not happened for Zaslav, the pandemic and then tech bust, has really reset any time line he and those studios might have planned.

@Reuwsaat: Resurrections was a huge flop and lost them a lot of money so no I don't think they would deliberately make the next one even worse
