New MCU TV Show Ms. Marvel Has Found Its Directors

The upcoming Disney+ show will bring Marvel's first Muslim hero to life.

It's been a big week for streaming MCU TV show news. She-Hulk has found its lead with Tatiana Maslany and pilot director, and now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that the upcoming Ms. Marvel show has locked down a directorial team--and not just any team at that. Bad Boys for Life's Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will be working on the series alongside two-time documentary short Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and The Walking Dead and Punisher alumni Meera Menon.

First announced back in August of 2019, Ms. Marvel will feature the MCU's first Muslim superhero, Kamala Khan, who inhereted the Ms. Marvel name from her own personal hero, Carol Danvers. Since then, Kamala has also been featured in the Avengers video game as one of the lead characters. Her powers, originally triggered by the Inhuman-creating Terragin mists, allow her to bend, stretch, and grow her body--an ability she calls "embiggening" to any size she wants.

The show will be written by Bisha K. Ali (Four Weddings and a Funeral), who is also attached to work as showrunner.

Unfortunately, the release dates and premier plans of every MCU Disney+ TV show remain up in the air as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause production delays. There has been speculation of a second delay for the theatrical release of Black Widow--but Disney has also stated that it plans to proceed with the release of WandaVision on the streaming platform some time before the end of 2020. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which was originally scheduled for release in August of this year, and was intended to be the first MCU show to debut on the platform, has yet to receive a new date.

This is literally the first Muslim hero and people lose their shit. I was on the same boat with you guys with the Woke shit, but cmon this is getting a little bit absurd. Is not like we have 10 Muslim heroes or anyone changing the race of an established white character ( what is happening a lot, be mad at that).

So yeah don't identify everything with the woke movement, this is something apart from that. This is an entry of a Central Asian character of Muslim descent, A FIRST one. I know she is cringe and nothing special but you guys should not label everything that has a slight tint with the woke movement, this makes it racist and others will feel that they are not welcome. Kamala Khan is from Pakistan for crying out loud, it has nothing to do with the American woke movement or anything (maybe these news outlets are trying to do that by constantly showing news about her, which might get tiring I know). Shang Chi gets his movie/show and so does she. Marvel comics have a lot of heroes from different nationalities.

So stop labeling everything woke and instantly saying its trash. Smh, as an Arab/Persian, if they made a show about me, I would not feel my self welcome around you guys acting like this. Be mad at Disney for ruining Star Wars, NOW THAT is what I call woke shit and being force-fed. No pun intended.

Isn't it kind of racist to hire only Muslim/Arab people to write or direct this show...? Basically they're saying that only a Muslim can write/direct a show about another Muslim. Anthony Mackie made this point about the crew of Black Panther.

@asultana121x: Well I think you are reading too deeply into the subject of who they hired and not why they hired who they did. If you are going to write a honest portrayal of muslim teen life in America then you wouldn't hire some old men from Sweden even if they were the best at TV production. A young girls life is not best told by incels on the internet though they do seem to have a strange obsession with what they do and who they interact with.

I mean in the past Westerns were not largely told from the American Indians perspective for a reason. But you do not need and entire race or gender to produce a tv show, you just need the best talent for what the story is going to be about. Now I know we all think William Shatner is the best captain of star trek, but I wouldn't exactly hire him to teach astronauts at NASA. Nor would I hire an all African American staff to produce Black Panther, but of course when it came to set production I would not hire the Sex in the City production staff no matter how well they have implemented leopard print.... everywhere.

I guess the best quote is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6WHBO_Qc-Q&ab_channel=Movieclips tropic thunder. If you are going to write film about a set character, you need perspective and presentation to the audience of that character. 40's Black face and poorly spoken Asian accents just doesn't cut it anymore. If you telling a story of a cancer patient on deaths door, that doesn't mean they actually have to be dying. But if dwayne the rock johnson portrayed a AR riddled teen- he probably would need a ton of cgi.

Think about it this way, if your life was going to be turned into a movie, does the entire film company need to be a set race, age, sex. But if it is about you, then the actor, writer, director .. should be. The USA and world is more then just one religion, race, or gender... and now today people want more then just Friends reruns, which means stories of color told by people of color. Which is a beautiful, wondrous thing.

@asultana121x: Exactly. If it is about a Muslim only a Muslim should write it.

@thegreatchomp: lol, you misinterpreted what I wrote. That's not what I was saying. I was saying you don't need to hire all people of the same ethnicity to write about their own people. They should hire a good writer or director period.

@asultana121x: lol. A Muslim should write about another Muslim, not an atheist or Christian. It’s not racist, it’s to prevent racism and for accuracy. It would be like me writing a story about a 14 year old girl. What do I know about that? Nothing.

Oh, the first Muslim superhero, thank God. Yay for progress!

But it's not enough. It never is.

Can we get maybe a blind Vietnamese paraplegic next? I'm going over my checklist of cultural, ethnic and sexuality panderings and I'm just not seeing this one...

@djk9: You are talking about Marvel comics you know, the medium that tackled issues like races, gay, rape, police abuse, PTSD, and many many more long before you and I were even born.

The Marvel Universe has had (name everything you mentioned) long before the 80s. Stan Lee and Marvel comics never hesitated from a medium that mirrors our who we are and challenges we face.

If progress scares you, go read early DC comics, it is safe. Your safe, a perfect vanilla bland world for you where you do not have to keep checklists. Well save for Batman and Robin, that was some weird shit going on back in the 50's for sure.
