New Neverwinter set for 2011

Atari and Cryptic are working on a new not-quite-massively multiplayer online game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

In May, onetime Cryptic Studios chief creative officer Bill Roper confirmed that the massively multiplayer online role-playing game studio would push ahead with new projects beyond Champions Online and Star Trek Online. With the industry veteran promising a late summer announcement for Cryptic's next project, many speculated that the Atari-owned studio would soon bring a Dungeons & Dragons-themed online game to market.

Neverwinter's gates will open to gamers next year.
Neverwinter's gates will open to gamers next year.

Speculate no longer, as Atari and Cryptic announced today Neverwinter, an all-new online game based on Wizards of the Coast's D&D brand and set in the fantasy universe's iconic city. Neverwinter is expected to launch for the PC in late 2011.

Though it shares the name and many of the locales seen in BioWare's acclaimed role-playing game Neverwinter Nights, Cryptic's MMORPG will tell an alternate story, one in which the once mighty city has been decimated by a century of hardship. The land is plagued by civil war due to an unclear succession, a matter complicated by an actual plague that claimed the lives of many of the land's denizens.

While Neverwinter will require players to connect to an online server to play, Cryptic stopped short of calling it a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. In the game, players can choose from five traditional D&D character classes. Gamers can then join five-man squads composed of other online players to venture forth into the city's dungeons, completing quests and gathering items along the way. Neverwinter also offers a single-player component, in which players can recruit computer-controlled allies to accomplish the same missions.

True to the D&D experience, Neverwinter will also let players craft their own in-game storylines and quests by way of an in-game content-generation system currently known as "Forge." Additional details on Forge have not yet been revealed.

The game will launch alongside a new trilogy of novels written by fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, which are also set in the Forgotten Realms--the books will touch on the game's main characters, monsters, and storyline. Also planned for the launch of the online game is a new tabletop game from Dungeons & Dragons license owner Wizards of the Coast.

The game's announcement will likely agitate a lawsuit filed by Dungeons & Dragons Online creator and recent Warner Bros. acquisition Turbine, which sued license holder Atari in August 2009. In its suit, Turbine claimed that Atari deliberately underpromoted the relaunch of D&D Online under its new free-to-play business model as part of a licensing-agreement "termination" strategy. The suit claimed that the termination strategy was being pursued in bad faith, as Atari planned to launch its own competing product.

For more details on the game, read GameSpot's exclusive interview.

So Atari, who published D&D Online and went back on their promise for advertising, which ended in lawsuit, is now in on another D&D-based MMO that sounds pretty much the same? Huh, and from what I hear, Cryptic isn't very good either. Bad feeling they're going to ruin a favorite of mine.

If it's being developed by Cryptic, I'm hesitant to get even a little interested. Also, only five classes? Really? Just give me a proper Neverwinter Nights 3 made by BioWare or Obsidian, please.

I'd rather smell a stinky dog fart than play a NWN mmo made by the morons that made the Star Trek flop. Give me a freaking break people, we've got the KoToR mmorpg, the Elder Scrolls mmorpg, etc, etc... Some of us want single player rpgs! PS retard devs: I guarantee you your crap mmos will die, and no, they won't beat WoW, so make a single player game AND PLEASE YOUR FANS FOR ONCE.

the only thing this will share with NWN is the setting, from the mediocre OC. it won't have the things that made NWN great like the toolset and custom content

So is this game set in the Never Winter Night universe but not related kind of like FF tatics and FFXII or is it more like a spiritual sequel?

Bill Roper is a con artist and should be in prison for fraud. Never forget Hellgate:London and the total farce that was Bill Roper, people. Do not buy this game!

Not being negative, I might pass on this one. However, if it is free to play I may reconsider.

I will give it a chance but there isn't a great track record here and I would hate to see the Neverwinter fantasy ruined by the kingdom of halfassdom.

ahh don't make the game bad before it's even out. i'm sure the developer learned from it's mistakes in the past. that being said, i hate mmorpgs. they should have made a single player game.

Bill Roper, Cryptic, Neverwinter Nights Spin Off? Oh man maybe this will catch just as much flack as the Hellgate London days. Bill is in for yet another super fail. Man, truly upsetting. It's so said to see great Franchises go to *&$t. Oh, well.

Why would you let Cryptic come in 1000 yards of your IP after the butchery that was Star Trek Online? D&D's main problem with making it to the MMO-like area is due to giving their property to awful companies. Black Isle and Bioware were awesome with BG, IWD and while Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 were okay, they were still far superior to other RPGs out there. This sounds like D&D Stormreach but will probably be toned down, less character creation heavy and more streamlines for non-D&D fans. When these guys realize D&D games are only for a certain breed of people and not mainstream markets, we will once again have good games. Until then we'll end up with crap like this.

5 classes, you have to be f#$%ing kidding me. There are over 30 in the first game and 20 in the second! My only guess is that they are making based on RS4, they greatest abomination over in tabletop gaming history.

@green_dominator NWN 2 was pretty good too I thought, but no where near as atmospheric or characterized as the original. Perhaps the main thing to worry about is that it's probably just going to be "set" in NeverWinter, as opposed to being "NeverWinter Nights: Online". We've seen plenty of games set in that area...so we'll have to see. But if they are indeed following the guidelines of making a real sequel - I have faith.

If Bioware isn't developing it then it doesn't matter as a game. The original NWN was awesome, The expansions were okay but the main game was superb......more than that it was as close to perfection as you could get......

@sirmordredx It is NOT Ray Muzyka who is directing this game. It is Bill Roper. Hellgate:London's Bill Roper. Champions Online's Bill Roper.

Yeah! Finally more Neverwinter. Now I have to say I'm still skeptical about Crpytic, but what does it really matter when you've got a Ray Muzyka game as your direction - like with NWN 2. I hope there will be a single player option as well...oh AND there HAS to be modding support. One of the reasons I played NWN for so long was because of great mods that came out like Halo of Flies, Blackwater Keep, ADWR, ETC.

Obviously alot of you guys have never played cryptic MMO's going back to city of heroes alittle history lesson is in order. Cryptic uses their same engine for all there games. This MMO will be using the same combat system and graphics engines that are in City Of Heroes, Champions Online, and Star Trek Online. The game will totally suck and be nothing like the Neverwinter Nights you know. Cryptic is just going to use this as a marketing tool so people will buy this game. Think about it for a second they are just annoucing this game and it will be out next year a total devlopment cycle of 2 years. You say how is that possible for an online game because they use this crappy engine they recycle with new skins on it for everything they develop. Cryptic is one of the cheapest companys in gaming and it shows. This game will be another big Cryptic disappointment they have already pissed me off enough with STO and i will never buy another cryptic game

Zzzzzzzzz...huh? what? Oh.....as much as I love D&D (having played pen and paper RPGs for years) I just can not get into NWN. I don't know what it is about this game but it bores me to tears. And now they are making it an MMO, that is one more reason to not like it.

I just hope the spc will be self contained and free of online "prompts" - otherwise this will be a major disappointment. And why is Atari in this anyway? Another fat dog dragging a smaller but more talented studio into the dirt with it's greedy plans to make an unreasonable amount of profit by pimping a well known name-brand. If they really had genuine intentions they would've just made another game (gave this a different name). All their going to do is throw this out there and if it sticks they will keep it - if not we won't eve hear from the Neverwinter Nights series again - sadly. Just like EA did with The Godfather 2. It isn't going to work, it never does - and say goodbye to yet another great and once promising game franchise.

Looks like it will be either a hit or a miss... I'm sure a lot of "old" gamers would appreciate this game, even like it, due to the "Forge" system while most other gamers would think of it as being lazy. Due to the fact that I used to enjoy boardgames like D&D, Talisman and HeroQuest, this modern-version-boardgame sounds pretty appealing. :)

They seem to be dumbing down(or "casualising") so many titles as of late. A lot of Diablo 3s new feature even are reeking of this, such as removing Town Portals and no health potions.. They even said they wanted to remove alot of the "trips to town to sell stuff".. but being able to turn items into "magic essence" I hope that essence is worth alot of money.. I reallly realllllly hope they don't dumb down this Neverwinter game... It would be two much.. and as someone else already said: "5 CLASSES!?!?!? THATS IT!?"

Seeing as both of Cryptic's games flat-out suck, I am not even marginally interested in this, despite enjoying the older games.
