New Neverwinter set for 2011

Atari and Cryptic are working on a new not-quite-massively multiplayer online game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

In May, onetime Cryptic Studios chief creative officer Bill Roper confirmed that the massively multiplayer online role-playing game studio would push ahead with new projects beyond Champions Online and Star Trek Online. With the industry veteran promising a late summer announcement for Cryptic's next project, many speculated that the Atari-owned studio would soon bring a Dungeons & Dragons-themed online game to market.

Neverwinter's gates will open to gamers next year.
Neverwinter's gates will open to gamers next year.

Speculate no longer, as Atari and Cryptic announced today Neverwinter, an all-new online game based on Wizards of the Coast's D&D brand and set in the fantasy universe's iconic city. Neverwinter is expected to launch for the PC in late 2011.

Though it shares the name and many of the locales seen in BioWare's acclaimed role-playing game Neverwinter Nights, Cryptic's MMORPG will tell an alternate story, one in which the once mighty city has been decimated by a century of hardship. The land is plagued by civil war due to an unclear succession, a matter complicated by an actual plague that claimed the lives of many of the land's denizens.

While Neverwinter will require players to connect to an online server to play, Cryptic stopped short of calling it a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. In the game, players can choose from five traditional D&D character classes. Gamers can then join five-man squads composed of other online players to venture forth into the city's dungeons, completing quests and gathering items along the way. Neverwinter also offers a single-player component, in which players can recruit computer-controlled allies to accomplish the same missions.

True to the D&D experience, Neverwinter will also let players craft their own in-game storylines and quests by way of an in-game content-generation system currently known as "Forge." Additional details on Forge have not yet been revealed.

The game will launch alongside a new trilogy of novels written by fantasy author R.A. Salvatore, which are also set in the Forgotten Realms--the books will touch on the game's main characters, monsters, and storyline. Also planned for the launch of the online game is a new tabletop game from Dungeons & Dragons license owner Wizards of the Coast.

The game's announcement will likely agitate a lawsuit filed by Dungeons & Dragons Online creator and recent Warner Bros. acquisition Turbine, which sued license holder Atari in August 2009. In its suit, Turbine claimed that Atari deliberately underpromoted the relaunch of D&D Online under its new free-to-play business model as part of a licensing-agreement "termination" strategy. The suit claimed that the termination strategy was being pursued in bad faith, as Atari planned to launch its own competing product.

For more details on the game, read GameSpot's exclusive interview.

Hmm.. sounds promising, like a Neverwinter Nights Diablo2ish P/C game.. Nice break from the usual MMO i suppose. edit: IMO cryptic has failed to deliver on its MMO's, releasing them w/o the content needed.. I think this kinda game is more of something they'll be able to take on, instead of makeing a massive MMO that needs hundreds of hours of content jus scale it down and make a diablo2-esque dungeon crawler.. Crpytic might actually be good at that.

Atari and Cryptic combined with the fantastic game Neverwinter doesnt add up. Cyrptics games these days are not that great either and the new direction that they are thinking of taking the game doesnt sound good. Unless Bioware or Obsidian isnt making this game I am not touching it.

And thus ends the glorious franchise, started by Bioware, known as Neverwinter Nights! R.I.P. Cryptic you're absolute garbage! Your games suck! Lancer Vi

The only way I'd get this if that in addition to the new books, Salvatore writes the game's story. Its the only way to be assured of having a worthwhile story.

Hmm. I have the second neverwinter nights and the only problem I found with it was the amazingly boring combat- the spells were fine, but the characters stood for at least 2 seconds before delivering a blow with a sword... Hope its not a "Turn based" game anymore... Im definitely going to keep my eye on it- lets hope the storyline isnt miserable.

A new IP but it's a MMORPG. While Neverwinter Nights did have a fair bit of fun packed in it's multiplayer component, still those games were strong mainly due to their interaction with NPC,story and customizable engine. Not sure how a MMO is really going to be the right next step for the Neverwinter setting but hopefully it turns out well.

People need to read the article , this is not Neverwinter Nights, it's a "new" IP. Also nothing says quality like Cryptic and Atari , it will end up being another rushed game that postpones the foreclosure of this company for another year because people actually believe they are capable of developing a good game

This is basically your nwn3 without the story campeign, missing 75% of classes.. and probably missing feats, spells, skills, weapons.... Poor NWN.. how could they do this to you...

The game sounds a bit like Guild Wars to me. Not a bad thing if it is, unless they start asking for monthly payments(since GW doesn't).

Cryptic needs to learn to fix up the MMOs they already have to a standard level before pushing a new one out.

A bit confusing... I think it's a multiplayer, not-so-massive game. Or maybe it's a massive, not-so-multiplayer game.

I just did some further research on the game, and apparently it isn't even using 4th Edition D&D rules. It's actually using a watered down standard rules system akin to the Dark Alliance games. Pass. If you won't use the actual D&D rules system, you aren't making a D&D game. Good luck selling that to NWN faithful such as myself.

Let me clear up some information: This isn't an MMO. The interviews say this isn't an MMO. Reading Rainbow mustn't have left a mark on half the posters. Bill Roper is leaving Cryptic. He doesn't work there anymore. So, please, instead of saying "ZOMG an MMO with Bill Roper" understand that this isn't an MMO and Bill Roper won't be involved since he's departing Cryptic.

ugh please tell me your not getting rid of the pen and paper to PC mode that made the original neverwinter nights games so fun...that was the main draw of the game. to be able to be the dungeon master and host adventures and create worlds... lots of amazing things were done with the first neverwinter because of that... turning it into just another mmo-like game is a yawn. Because neverwinter nights brought unique online gameplay!!! and creating your own quests for others to play pales in comparision to creating your own adventures and being the dungeon master to give players something unique! sighs....games need to become more innovative not take two big steps backwards!

When i saw the title i got excited for about one second...then i thought it might be an MMO. Sadly my fears were justified. Sure it does say it has a single player component, but does it have a strong story or just MMO type gameplay and quests with AIs instead of real players? We'll have to wait for an answer to that question.

I could bet a thousand bucks that NWN 3 will be a simplified and dumbmatized version of NWN 2 with chliched story for teenagers. But in spite of that the game will sell millions and recieve 9.5 out of 10. The recent tendecy is quite obvious.

5 classes? The original Neverwinter Nights had at least 12...and why isn't this being made by Bioware? Neverwinter Nights 1's probably my all-time favorite hack n' slash RPG, but...count me out on this unless they change it. =/

I'd like to have an HD rehash of the old Capcom Dungeons and Dragons arcade beat'em-ups. They're the best D&D games I've ever played. Demon Stone (PS2, XBOX) was pretty good, but it wasn't as good as those Capcom iterations.

What studios don't seem to realize is that a huge part of what made NWN and BG fun was the character customization and variety. There were dozens of classes, subclasses etc and they could all be customized with unique feats and abilities. Games like Dragon Age etc take all that fun away. Hopefully Cryptic figures this out. Seeing their MMORPG's however leaves me doubting...
