New Ni-Oh Gameplay Video Blends Dark Souls, Onimusha, and Ninja Gaiden

Team Ninja's next game looks to be shaping up nicely.

There was a time when Team Ninja was considered the premiere developer of third-person action games. Its been 12 years since Ninja Gaiden was released for Xbox 360 and PS3, and the studio hasn't delivered anything as essential since.

However, its next game, Ni-Oh, looks like its shaping up to be something special. The game has been in development since 2004, but re-appeared in 2015, revealing itself to be a mix of Dark Souls and Capcom's Onimusha, with some obvious inspirations also taken from the studio's own Ninja Gaiden titles.

New gameplay was shown behind-closed-doors at Tokyo Games Show 2015, and now a video of that has appeared online. Check it out above.

What's striking about Ni-Oh is the pace of the game, which is much slower than Team Ninja's titles generally are. Combat looks to be based more around methodical, strategic attacks, as opposed to twitch-based combos.

Interestingly, the main character has multiple stances, indicating there will be a skill-based component to defence. This is different from Dark Souls, in which simply holding a shield up gets the job done.

There are other moments in the gameplay demo that evoke Dark Souls too, one of which is the red sword plunged into the ground. The protagonist uses it to check skills and equipment. It looks very much like the bonfires in From Software's games.

Ni-Oh started as a PlayStation 3 title, but is now being developed for the PlayStation 4. Neither Team Ninja nor its parent company, Koei Tecmo, have announced a release date for it yet.

"The game has been in development since 2004" well the graphics actually look like a 2004 game.

@louixiii: This just made it better, the only issue was the character seemed too strong to most and you die very easily in this.

@putaspongeon: I didn't like how the enemies look generic aside from the boss and the mini boss and I noticed that they recycled the same enemies a few times. I just don't see anything that sets this apart from games like Onimusha or DS aside from a different coat of paint.

I still hope it turns out to be something special though. Time will tell

Not impressed , expected more for sure . Look like a cheaply made game . Could be great if done right , i hope it will be.

Also , anyone annoyed by the weapons noises like me ?

I didn't even know this existed, they need to try and advertise it more, it actually shows some potential. Though I am a tad disappointed in the lack of limbs flying off.

I can see where everyone is getting the Dark Souls vibe from this game, but for me it's REALLY got that Onimusha feel to it. I think I might be looking at the next game I'll have to purchase day one.

The only chance this has of being great is if it's non-linear and their are branching paths and level design, if not it will suck.

Honestly, getting really burnt out from the Dark Souls style games. I was hoping for something more Ninja Gaiden with just the super fast pace over-the-top combos. But we'll see how this plays out. Also blonde samurai... really now...

@BoxOfPocky: The protagonist is based on an actual historic character, William Adams, known for being the first Englishman to travel to Japan and the very first Western samurai ever. Just sharing some info. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

If the game is like Dark Souls but without the annoying grind and repetition I am game. I can't stand having to fight my way through the same damn enemies over and over just to get to the boss again. So frustrating. And I hope the game has some story to it. The game had my curiosity, but now it has my attention.

@merwanor: In every SINGLE Dark Souls game and BLOODBORNE you NEVER have to KILL the enemies to get to the boss after your first time through the level (if you know what you're doing). There is ALWAYS a shortcut, or you just run right by the enemies. You CAN keep killing enemies to grind if you want, but also remember that you can beat these games at Level 1 (if you're good), and you don't have to level up at all. The point is that the games made so fairly and balanced so well that it allows you overcome any odds. Do you really think they would design the game so that you HAVE to fight all enemies EVERYTIME through the level??? This is the one single thing that tells me that the person making this comment (you) gave up before they even started trying, because if you tried, than you would find this out easily. Either that or you listened to Dan Stapleton from IGN, and never even played the game, which is even worse of a sin. So all in all your comment it tells me you're a quitter or casual, and thus, Dark Souls was made for the opposite of quitters and casuals. Maybe this will be a little more casual for you (Onimusha was pretty casual, and so are most Team Ninja games), but here's hoping it won't.

"12 years"? That was 2004. Neither the XBOX 360 nor PS3 existed then. Ninja Gaiden was an original XBOX exclusive in 2004 and was re-released as Ninja Gaiden Black a year later. It then got remade exclusively for the PS3 as Ninja Gaiden Sigma in 2007. Good god, Tamoor. Do some f'ing research if you're unsure about a game's release. That was really sloppy. :|

looking good so far, I just hope it will have a basic story like onimusha and not like dark souls (good game but the lack of a basic story kept me away)

@baral-o: Let me correct you: Dark Souls 1 is a MASTERPIECE and YOU didn't want to do the work to uncover the story. If you want narrative shoved down your throat, go play Uncharted. Your reasoning for "keeping away" from Dark Souls because there is no cliched story being shoved down your throat is possibly the stupidest excuse I've ever heard, and that's your fault, and I feel bad for you. Yeah, let's get Miyazaki to rewrite Dark Souls so that EVERYONE can just sit back and casually enjoy :) NOT.

@jdlok: firstly, I never said that it wasn't a good game, because it is, even though I personally consider the witcher 3 a true masterpiece but that's just my opinion (everyone likes different things and that ok)

I have tried both demon souls and dark souls I found demon's souls boring but dark souls was much much better and enjoyable, but I gave up after the third boss, not because of the difficulty but I just don't feel motivated to continue,

as for the story you speak, even the developers don't really know it (their words) I don't want to read description to theorise what the story may be, I watch three different people try to explain it by just playing the game with no external search and I got literally three different explanations, and no, a story can be told in many way, not only with cutscenes, there are many good examples,

all in all, dark souls IS a good game, just not for me, no need to get offended

I think it looks interesting! The influence of the Souls games is striking, but it is clearly dealing with a distinct, Far Eastern theme. I wonder if your character's appearance is customizable? And what kinds of class specializations will be available? I'll keep my eye on it, for sure.

@sotofudan: When they described the game in Chibi at TGS, they said the story is about a man named William which is you , the player character (sounds like the Last Samurai). So it seems like player customization as far as facial features and things like that are out. However, it looks like there will be a good number of samurai weapons and armor to outfit William with. Go look up more footage on the game on youtube. There are a few more tidbits that weren't shown in this game play demo.

The enemy's attack patterns need to be more varied and unpredictable (especially the monsters). I wonder why the player character is caucasian.

Wow, it's way more Dark Soulish than I thought it would be. Didn't even know it was an RPG, and it even has the same leveling system as DS. Animations look a bit clunky, but it looks fun.
