New Nintendo Switch Ad Highlights Fall's Big RPGs, Including Skyrim

Nintendo shows off three of the console's biggest RPGs this season.

Despite not even being on the market for a year, the Nintendo Switch has already become home to some major titles, with more still on the way. In addition to Super Mario Odyssey, the console will receive a few notable RPGs this year, which Nintendo has highlighted in a new ad.

The commercial runs for 30 seconds and showcases a trio of the system's recent and upcoming role-playing games: Fire Emblem Warriors, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Each of the titles is shown off briefly, while the person who is playing the game just narrowly avoids being hit by either a giant sword or a stream of flames. Take a look at the ad above.

Now Playing: Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Skyrim & Fire Emblem Warriors - 'Close Call' Nintendo Switch Trailer

Fire Emblem Warriors released for the system earlier this month, while Skyrim launches on November 17--the same week Switch will receive two other mature titles, Doom and LA Noire. The Switch version of Skyrim will be compatible with certain Legend of Zelda Amiibo figures, which will unlock series items such as the Master Sword and Link's Champion's Tunic for your character. We recently captured a lot of footage of Skyrim running on Switch.

The last of the three RPGs, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, releases on December 1. It's the third installment in Nintendo's open-world RPG series and takes place on the backs of colossal Titans, which roam about a vast sea of clouds. Nintendo showcased one of these Titans in an extended gameplay demo at Gamescom. Along with the standard version, Nintendo is releasing a special edition of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that includes a soundtrack CD, 220-page art book, and special packaging. Nintendo is also releasing a Xenoblade-themed Switch Pro Controller the day the game launches.

One point to this skyrim port is there are plenty of 8-13 year olds who prolly haven't played it and it's a great starter rpg for a kid looking to dable in the genre. Not every game needs to be for the cynical 30 somethings that generally bitch and moan in these comment sections.

LOVE the Switch. The console is doing so well for the first year.. Literally every game coming out each week until next year. I haven't been so in love with Nintendo since the Gamecube.

Love how the title includes skyrim, that game definitely hasn't had enough attention in the last 6 years. Who wants to play the new xenoblade when they can play skyrim, again again.

@slypher9: They even said they want more mature games on their system... It's like the Wii-u was a big wake up call or something.

FE-W is an RPG now?... and Skyrim 2 months before 2018 is a "notable" release?.

LOL!, only on a Nintendo console.

@agramonte: No matter how old Skyrim is still critically acclaimed and this time it’s portable. That’s “notable” to me.

@lebanese_boy:
I just don't get the love for "I can play Skyrim on the go!" That is the single, solitary attraction (to some) about Skyrim being on the Switch, but it's hardly a selling point to me. Did all these portable enthusiasts just discover the game that the rest of us discovered and enjoyed years ago? I can play it anytime, in the comfort of my living room.

Then don't buy it, it's a selling point to me.

Did all these portable enthusiasts just discover the game

No in fact many of them already own the game and love the idea of playing it on the go anywhere. Like me.

I can play it anytime, in the comfort of my living room

Great, good for you. Have fun.

@lebanese_boy: yeah, let me go spend $60 dollars and replay that opening tower sequence for the 100th time (where even on the PC remastered edition the dragon looks like a joke at this point) and convince myself it is great because now I'm playing it on the bus. Good luck with that.

I'll just play Wolfenstein 2 and Mario till Xenoblade 2 comes out. So many new games out no idea why would play random $50/60 dollars old rehashed games.

@pcgameboy: Totally!... It was great for its time. 29.99 would be a great starting point - Okami is 19.99 - I can see Skyrim a bit more because of the content and mobility.

@agramonte: All I know is I played Skyrim only once, would love to play it again, vastly prefer playing on a portable rather than in front of a TV/Monitor and this works for me. If this somehow ruins your mood or your day then too bad for you. But just know that your opinion/experience isn’t gospel and that the Switch version is highly anticipated and will likely sell a lot regardless of what you think.

@lebanese_boy: nonsense, you wasting your money on a random old port does not ruin my day. With everything out - a $60 port of 6 year old Skyrim on the Switch is not the best game available to me. it is just that simple. I'm also not homeless so a game being "portable" does not place it on top of my list.

@agramonte: Not everyone has played Skyrim yet, plus an old game now portable with hundreds of hours of content without microtransactions everywhere is welcome in this day and age.

@AttackOfTheCat: They selling you a port, of a port, of a port for $60 dollars - if they also do microtransactions it is just insult to injury.

@AttackOfTheCat: I guarantee Bethesda's little "Creation Factory" horseshit will be in Skyrim for Switch, so you are very wrong on the microtransaction front and if you haven't played Skyrim yet then it being on the Switch isn't going to make it any more appealing. Face it, Nintendo is behind the times AGAIN.

@BrokutheMighty: No, I'm not wrong, its already been confirmed that there is no mods in the Switch version so no point in having Creation Factory. Don't see how Nintendo is behind the times for a 3rd party game? The Special edition came out on PS4 and XboxOne last year and sold well, all it had was slightly better graphics, this version is portable which is a huge improvement to most people.

@shadowwarrior4: Yeah, that's kinda their whole schtick. Nintendo wanted to jump onto the toys-to-life bandwagaon after passing on Skylanders. Unlike Skylanders and other similar games though, amiibo don't do anything too special. Most games will unlock a costume or other cosmetic item if you scan certain characters, and that's about it. They're completely optional. In fact, the only game where amiibo were actually required to play, flopped so hard that Nintendo probably won't try anything like that again.

@desaigamon: Umm, nope you are wrong. It is a mod that you can get on PC as well. It's from the Creation Factory horseshit that Bethesda wants you to buy into.

@BrokutheMighty: Yes, on PC you can get mods that add pretty much anything into the game, but the Switch version DOES NOT HAVE MODS. I mean yes, Bethesda obviously modded the game to add that stuff, but you can't download anything else. The Zelda themed items can only be obtained by scanning the Zelda amiibo. It's been confirmed for a long time now. It even says so in the article that you clearly didn't bother reading.

The Switch version of Skyrim will be compatible with certain Legend of Zelda Amiibo figures, which will unlock series items such as the Master Sword and Link's Champion's Tunic for your character.

@sladakrobot: That's a bald faced lie. Microsoft went heavy into RPG exclusives on the 360 at first. The 360 was the best selling console too, at first. Then, suddenly, Microsoft gave up on them.

Not coincidentally, this is when the PS3 started to catch up to the 360 in sales, and eventually overtook it. The PS4 has continued the tradition of excellent exclusive RPGs on the platform, and wow would you look at the sales figures now.

@Thanatos2k: wtf are you talking about?

And about of which PS4 excellent tradition are you dreaming about?

Star Ocean,Tales of,Neptunia? Aside of Persona 5 all mediocre to crap! Excellent tradition lol stop lying!

If you do look back, the Ps1 has the best jrpg library, the PS2 had already way less jrpgs and the Ps3 was a letdown.

@sladakrobot: No console during the 7th and 8th gen was/has really been a 'home' for JRPGs, especially for the non AAA titles. Those have seemingly gravitated to portables, which makes sense because they sell so much better in Japan.

@sladakrobot: Microsoft's console audience are either barely interested in non-WRPGs or they loathe the genre in general.

Sport and FPS games are the meat and bones of the Xbox.

@sladakrobot: What good exclusive RPG's were on 360? Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon were great, Fable 3 was OKish. Can't remember others offhand.

And I think overall, the 360 did pretty great.

@aross2004: it did well but the jrpgs wasnt the reason it got popular or the reason ppl bought it. One of the best jrpgs is Lost Odyssey, the best "Tales of" games is Vesperia, bunch of good followed with Blue Dragon,Eternal Sonata,Star Ocean,Resonance of Fate,Infinite Undiscovery,Magna Carta 2 and few so-so like The Last Remnant. Not all are exclusive but i listed them just show that the X360 had in the first years plenty of jrpgs but they sold crap so MS stopped publishing them or the 3rd party simply focused on the ps3.

@aross2004: Tales of Vesperia. There was also Eternal Sonata, Magna Carta 2, Star Ocean 4, and Infinite Undiscovery which I would not call excellent but not bad.

Not coincidentally, after Microsoft bailed on the genre, developers quickly ported some of these to the PS3.
