New Nintendo Switch Mario Tennis Game Revealed During Direct In January 2018

Ace!

As part of today's Nintendo Direct mini presentation, the Japanese company revealed a new Mario Tennis game for Switch. Called Mario Tennis Aces, the title will be the first Mario sports game for Switch since the console's launch last year, and it's coming in Spring 2018.

Interestingly, Aces will contain a new story mode. That makes it the first Mario Tennis game to include a campaign since 2005's Mario Tennis: Power Tour (known as Mario Power Tennis in Europe and Australia). Few other details have been revealed so far, though we do know the game is being made by long-time Mario sports developer Camelot. You can watch today's presentation in its entirety here.

The most recent Mario sports game was Mario Sports Superstars, which launched in 2017 for 3DS. The last standalone Mario Tennis game, meanwhile, came for Wii U in 2015. We awarded it a 6/10 in our Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash review. "Ultra Smash does just enough to get by," wrote critic Scott Butterworth. "At moments it shines and at others it frustrates, but mostly it just coasts. Without substantial content to drive longevity, you may end up switching back to Mario Kart sooner than later, but if you're playing online--or better yet, with your friends at home--you'll likely overcome the game's frustrations and squeeze a solid few hours of fun out of its fast-paced, power-up-driven action."

Mario Tennis is like the modern evolution of Pong, when you think about it. It's a staple of gaming.

"the title will be the first Mario sports game for Switch"

I think racing is considered a sport which makes this the second mario sports game next to mario kart

@drunk_punk: some racing is a sport due to the physical wear on the body....nascar and f1 for example....i dont think anyone considers go-Karts a sport unless they themselves are involved lol

@banhammer: You are probably right about go karts not being classified as a sport. I am not too sure how long the whole can't be a sport unless there is physical wear on the body will carry on for as gaming is considered an "esport" and there is talk of it going to the olympics. Curling doesn't exactly cause a lot of strain on the body either.

@drunk_punk: yes, but with esports...its different, we all know they arent sports , they are just using the name sports....league of legends isnt a "sport" but it is an esport....there are a few nutballs out there though that are trying to get esports recognized as sports and the gamers as athletes lol

Mario Tennis didn't seem to have any real succes to me...

Actually most mario sports games were all underachieving.

Mario Golf was fun for a bit but not enough to pay 50-60$ for such a game.

It would have been better if the story mode character was an original character like the story mode on Mario Tennis for the GBC and GBA

The console should have been called "Nintendo Déjà Vu"
