New Nintendo Switch Report Talks Resolution and Touchscreen

Nintendo finally adopts multi-touch support.

While Nintendo is apparently content to wait until January to reveal much more about the Switch, a new report has emerged detailing some key information about the system and its screen.

Among these is the fact that Switch is equipped with a 6.2-inch screen featuring a 720p resolution. This is according to sources speaking with Eurogamer, which accurately reported on numerous details about the Switch, including its console/hybrid format, months before they were announced.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Nintendo Switch Report Talks Resolution and Touchscreen

No Caption Provided

The site also reports the screen is indeed a touchscreen. That's something Nintendo didn't indicate during last week's announcement video, but it is in fact a capacitive multi-touch screen.

That's a big step up from the resistive, single-touch screens of the 3DS and Wii U, which were lacking in terms of accuracy and the ability to interact with more than one finger/stylus at a time. This will allow for the sort of multi-touch input featured in games on Vita, mobile devices, and tablets.

It's unclear why Nintendo didn't reference this in last week's announcement and refused to offer comment in the days after. Nintendo may have simply wanted to focus exclusively on the console/handheld aspect of the system.

No Caption Provided

We also don't yet know how Switch will handle touch input in games when the system is stored in its dock, which both covers the screen and puts it out of reach. Eurogamer notes the right Joy-Con has an IR sensor that could potentially allow it to be pointed at the TV in lieu of touching the touchscreen.

The first interview with Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima since Switch's announcement was published today. He said that last week's announcement video was "[b]y no means was that everything" to see about the system and teased additional accessories or add-ons for it.

720p on that size of a screen is fine. And something people fail to realize is there is an Nvidia gpu inside the Switch instead of an AMD. As much as I don't like Nvidia for the bs they've done and some they continue to do, their gpus run better (and cooler) than AMD's.

Will the Switch reach the same resolution as the PS4 and Xbone? Probably not, but I'm willing to bet they'll prioritize 60fps over higher resolution, which is honestly what you want in games and is what they did with the WiiU.

The fact that an iPhone 6 Plus still has better specs (14hr battery life and probably 6hrs gaming) than the Switch kind of bothers me considering people hate apple for being late in core specs that Samsung has...

I don't understand why people think 720p is okay nowadays. Most phones these days are 1080p, and those who say they can't tell the difference have got to have pretty bad eye sight.

Size is no justification for pixel count. The ratio is still the same, that is, you still view something the same distance away relative to its screen size. That's why he hold phones close to our faces, because it compensates for the smaller screen. Having lower pixel density is therefore noticeable in the same way it would be on the TV, it just fools us into thinking it's theoretically okay because the screen is smaller on the table. Everyone who teased Quantum Break for being 720p is therefore just as entitled to ridicule Nintendo's new system. They should have atleast went the 1080p rout.

720p for a six inch screen is fine. 1080p for anything lower than about 20 inches is over kill. The 4K phones that have started to hit the market are just a waste of pixels and battery life for instance.

1080p should be the standard for TVs though. The main issue will be reaching that using such a small device.

If Xbox and PS4 are starting to step into 4K territory and Nintendo are still stuck in sub HD, that will once again start to create problems for the third party developers.

We've seen Skyrim which is a five year old game, Zelda which is hardly pushing the graphics to start with and a sports game which my ass can run at 1080p. So we've hardly had convincing proof of the power of this thing.

Really depressed the Switch is not 8K compatible. Was hoping to have my mind blown playing the new Mario game in that resolution.

@Moonco: lol... but mario doesn't even have texture on his skin or his clothing. nor does he have individual hairs on his head or mustache... it's like a big clump of "stuff" on his head. i don't think he is ready for his closeup in 8k. he would look pretty ugly when viewed in such detail :D

Touch screen is not 4k HDR and 120 FPS in 2017? LOL guess I am sticking with my new 3ds. I'm so hardcore obviously. Fabulous as well.

I was hoping it would be 1080p, but really, this is a non issue. It's a handheld, folks. Can anyone tell much difference at all between 720p and 1080p mobile phones? I seriously, seriously doubt it.

The screen will look just fine, and the TV display will assuredly run at 1080p.

@FLEEBS: You're missing the point. It's almost 2017. The PS4 will be FOUR YEARS older than the Switch when it comes out, and it STILL is overpowering the Switch. Unacceptable.

Nintendo's hubris is irrefutably their downfall. They think they're innovators, when really they're drunk off their legacy and rooted in the past, willing to do ANYTHING BUT listen to their audience and give them what they want: power, partnerships, and games. With this new console, they're making an underpowered home console AND an underpowered handheld. It is simply trying to be both things and failing at both. At least the Vita was a beast of a machine, with a 900p OLED screen and enough power to play PS1/2/3/4/Vita games.

The Vita came out almost FIVE YEARS ago. Remote Play is ancient and not a new idea at all. For some reason MS and Nintendo just now introducing (crappy) variations of Remote Play think it is groundbreakingly innovative. It's not. I was playing Fallout 4 on my Vita in Portugal perfectly. I live in California.

Can you tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on mobile? Yeah, you can. That's why the iPhone 4 was such a big deal. iPhone 3GS's resolution looked like pixelated crap compared to the iPhone 4's Retina Display. In fact, the closer your face/eyes are to a screen, the easier you can see its shortcomings.

The screen will look serviceable at best, at extremely dated and obsolete at its worst. Moreover, its tiny box assures it will NOT be able to do even 1080p, as the monstrous Xbox One can barely maintain 900p. And forget about any chance of VR, which is MS and Sony's and PC's next big thing.

The Switch is a bomb waiting to happen. It's underpowered, it's cheap but corner-cutting, and it will suffer immensely for it. I don't understand why Nintendo just doesn't compete directly with MS and Sony. Is it so freaking hard to implement a powerful box that plays movies, shows in HD/UHD, a console powerful enough for third party devs to confidently develop their software for, AND it also plays your favorite Nintendo IPs? Why is Nintendo afraid to grow some balls and make a console that goes toe-to-toe with its competition? 10 out of 10 times when I go to Best Buy and look for monitors, consoles, TVs, whatever--I look at the specs--whatever is the most powerful for the cheapest price I am buying it. Period.

When Nintendo releases this, and it's STILL not as powerful as consoles released 4 years ago, added to the fact of Scorpio and Pro's imminent releases, this console is as good as dead the day it becomes available.

Such a shame.

@jaymikells: Wrong. You clearly do not own a Vita.

The Vita is 900p. Remote Play's PS4 graphics stream it at 900p. If it was at 540p all the beautiful PS4 games would look like garbage. Thankfully they don't. 900p!

@nikolistary: The problem is Nintendo is still rooted in the past, or rather, still rooted in Japan. They only care for that market, and everyone else will just have to deal with their decisions made for Japan. This is why we got so much streetpass garbage on the DS despite it being a complete failure everywhere but Japan.

Nintendo has seen the writing on the wall in Japan that consoles are struggling and mobile is king, so they're chasing the mobile market. Unfortunately, Sony and Microsoft have realized that Japan is not the only market that matters to video games anymore, and making a system palatable to the entire world is the key to future growth.

I'm sure the Switch will be a success in Japan. Too bad for Nintendo that Japan is not enough.

@nikolistary: lol and you still missing the big picture why 3rd parties don't like to make games for Nintendo system... Its simple they don't sell to there desire..

If you give 3rd parties a system with the power of ps1 and give them the "switch" who you think they'll make games for..

What your suggesting is a 3 way power race... The last time that happen (Nintendo-Gamecube, Sony-PS2, Sega-Dreamcast), it ran Sega close to bankrupt and they had to come out of the hardware business

If Nintendo makes a really powerful system who is it benefiting surely not 3rd parties, because even if they just port there games over, it won't sell to there liking and Nintendo is very reluctant to pay for exclusives..

Also i think Nintendo don't see MS/Sony as competitors, they probably just see them as providers, because if they did they would surely try to one-up them every new system outing..

If you don't like the system or the idea they are trying to sell, speak with your money and don't buy it..

@nikolistary: I am absolutely not missing the point, I know what year it is, and you do not know the final specs of the Switch, no matter what rumors are out there.

I have an iPhone 6 Plus, and my plenty of my friends have iPhone 6's. There is not as massive a difference in resolution as you are making. Sure, there is a difference, but it's pretty negligible and forgettable. Honestly, the screens are too small to really worry about much. I certainly don't feel like holding the phone two inches from my eyes when I'm viewing something. Even if the Switch's screen does end up being 720p (this is not an official announcement, after all), it will look good enough.

All I care about (and know) is that the Switch is definitely a purchase I want to make, and I will have a blast with it. I don't care about the ultimate specs of the system, or any other, for that matter. I want to play the games that will be released for it, and I'm confident I will enjoy them.

@nikolistary: Have you ever considered that if you hate everything they do each time, maybe you're NOT their audience? The only times they tried to compete with other consoles' power were with the NES and SNES. Since then, it's been more about making an adequate system for their games, new silly gimmicks, at a price they expect parents to find acceptable when buying one for their kids. My wife and kids went nuts when they first saw the Wii, WiiU, and Switch. I think that's more their target audience.

@NaturallyEvil: The 64 and Gamecube certainly had enough horsepower to compete with the other companies at the time. In fact, both of those systems had features that were better than and beyond the competitors at the time. They started dumbing down their systems with the release of the Wii.

@FLEEBS: On paper, yes. But then they both used storage formats for their games that limited what games could be on the system. And although the Gamecube was more capable than the PS2, it couldn't compare with the Xbox and its hard drive which made it possible to even run games like Morrowind.

That stuff was the beginning of their current philisophy, and releasing entire underpowered gimmick consoles like the Wii was a natural progression from there.

I'm no graphics whore, but that's a deal breaker.

When will Nintendo learn that trying to sell underpowered hardware is the kiss of death?

@sladakrobot: good question... maybe the games are built to be downscaled to 720p when played on the portable device, but play at their native 1080p resolution when connected to a tv. let us hope so or else we are going back to 2005.

@Xristophoros: It's been leaked a while back that the native res is 900p, not even 1080p. but like all leaks and rumors.... believe at your own discretion. With Scorpion and Pro on the plate, I can't see Switch making sense for enthusiasts unless it's above 1080p.

lol i called it after the reveal. it was obviously a touch screen... also knew it would be 720p, which clearly indicates how underpowered the switch is. as has already been assumed, it will be slightly more powerful than the wii u. not necessarily a deal breaker, but this might pose a problem when it comes to 3rd parties porting their games over.

I feel this will continue the trend of falling sales of home consoles for Nintendo because...

1. it is underpowered compared to competition 2. its battery life will be poor 3. it has different architecture and GPU to competition, dodgy ports 4. following from 3, 3rd party developers will pull support. 5. It will, well it's various controllers, will get the 'gimmick' tag.

It's saving grace may be that it is in actual fact a handheld, which Nintendo do well with. The battery life however to maintain even 720p, touchscreen gaming will make it pretty useless.

Basically left with an underpowered home console or short life handheld.

So if it is a touchscreen, there's no reason it can't be backwards compatible to the Wii U.

And if it's a touchscreen, why in god's name wasn't that in their fancy video? That's a pretty big thing to leave out.

(Also, that just means even less battery life for the thing)

@Thanatos2k: It's because this is a replacement for the 3DS, not just the Wii U, and they want to sell as many 3DS as possible this holiday before they make the official announcement about the 3DS-like features of the screen, like touchscreen, haptic feedback screen, and glasses free 3D.
