New PS2, PSP models revealed

Lighter version of classic console, red PSPs head to Japan and Europe; SCEA reps mum on North American plans.

Today in Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed rumors by officially unveiling a new version the PlayStation 2. The latest iteration of the hardware--which has sold over 120 million units internationally in its seven-plus years on the market--will be available in three colors (black, white, and silver) and have a built-in AC adaptor. Officially announced for Japan, the PS2, model #SCPH-90000, has also been confirmed for release in the EU by Sony Europe. In Japan, it will retail for ¥16,000 (approx. $139), the same price as the old model, which is also the same size. No European pricing is yet available for the SCPH-90000 PS2.

Sony also announced today a new "Deep Red" edition of its PlayStation Portable will go on sale in Japan. As the name implies, the new PSP will be red in color, a hue Sony said was chosen for its appeal to holiday shoppers. In Japan, it will arrive on December 13 in two versions. The ¥22,800 (about $199) "PSP Deep Red Value Pack" includes a pouch, handstrap, cleaning cloth, and 32MB Memory Stick Duo for game data. The ¥29,800 (around $260) "PSP Deep Red 1 Seg Pack" includes the handheld's 1 Seg TV tuner, a 1GB Memory Stick Duo, and a viewing stand, as well as the aforementioned pouch, handstrap, and cloth.

No Caption Provided

Though the Deep Red PSP isn't yet officially headed for Europe, unconfirmed reports have the continent getting its own cherry-hued version of the console. The PlayStation.com forums briefly displayed packaging for a bundle containing a new bright red PSP and UMD movie discs of the Spider-Man 2, which was packed in with the PSP at launch, and Spider-Man 3, which is currently bundled with the $399 40GB PlayStation 3 in Blu-ray disc form. (The post displaying the packaging has since been deleted by PlayStation.com administrators.)

Sony Computer Entertainment America would not confirm nor deny the Spider-Man PSP bundle's existence, let alone whether or not it would be available outside Europe. SCEA reps also would not confirm whether or not the Deep Red PSP or the new PS2 would ever land on North American shores.

"We haven't announced anything, the only new PS2 we've announced is the new limited edition SingStar bundle that started shipping this week," a rep said, referencing the white PS2 package deal, which went on sale today in the US and Canada.

Snakes2Solid: "when you're at 5 million worldwide and the other 2 are at 13 and 12 million" Dude, Wii is just a casual selling machine and The PS3 has been out for a single year. The 360 is at that much because it's been out for 2 years! Apparently, PS3 is on a similar track pace to match the number of 360s sold in 2 years.

"ps2 is still great, but all attention should be on pushing the ps3. sell more ps3's ... regain your exclusives again...get it?.. ....when you're at 5 million worldwide and the other 2 are at 13 and 12 million...you need to get a movin!!.. maybe a good business decision to make some money..but i'm concerned that the ps3 will lose more storied franchises because they feel the ps3 install base is too low compared to the other 2..... i like the psp options for colors...that makes sense....." $399 is their way of getting more PS3 off of shelves. I'm no Sony fanboy but this should be common sense to anyone. $399 for a PS3 is a MAJOR way of increasing your install base. They've finally returned to the realm of competive pricing for VIDEOGAME SYSTEMS (as opposed to HD movie playback devices).

space-Q... everyone complained cause the ps3 was too expensive for the most part... 600 for a system that had only a few good games for the launch window , while the ps2 still had so many great games flowing.. not good for the ps3 enthusiast trying to justify the expensive purchase,,...but gamers want their cake and eat it too!...don't you get it?...hehe

why does everyone complain about BC? you had a chance to get one with it and you can still find 60gig versions around. before everyone btched that they didn't buy a PS3 to play PS2 games now people are complaining that they can't play PS2 games on there PS3.

To me, the new PS2 sounds exactly the same as the onld Slimline but with the AC adapter built in. Big deal! I'm fine with my current Slimline.

Shame they couldn't make the unit (PS2) any smaller, then it would have given me a cause to replace the older slimline. Still if the DVD drive is any faster - resulting in loading times reduced, even a little, it'll be worth it. Besides one can't relay on the PS3 being backward anymore and it breaks the tradition. The tradition that i really enjoyed and will go as far as saying that it's one of those great innovations sony bought to home console (not handheld that'll be nintendo). Anyway let's wait and see if it will be here in time for christmas.

Yeah seriously, more space does NOT equal better games, no way no how. It has 'potential' to offer longer games due to the availability of room for art assets, but games take long enough to develop as is, people are hardly going to take advantage of that. The core of what makes a game 'great' or not takes relatively small amount of disc space as it's mostly refinement of code or controls/databases/stats etc, and those are text files taking up less room than a single texture most of the time. So no, bluray does not make for 'better more advanced HD gaming' at all, despite the fact the ad for Heavenly Sword states this.

ps3 with blueray means more space for games which equals great games? WRONG! really the only thing the ps3 has space for is lots of hot air! TAKE THAT!

@NinjaMunkey01: No, you don't seem to get it. Titanicles is right about the game selection. It is why even at this stage, many people find the PS2 a better value than the PS3. Blu-ray means more space, no question. However, the fact that the PS3 has blu-ray doesn't mean its easier to program for. The PS2, wasn't easy either, but not as hard as publishers have been saying the PS3 is. So if the Blu-ray has tons of space, it can be filled with either excellent code to make a great game (Ratchet, Warhawk) or filled with a ton of absolute garbage (Lair). If I had the choice to choose only the PS3 or PS2 with $600 in hand, I would pick the PS2 and a TON of excellent games, without hesistation.

yep, 2008 will be the year that the PS3 finally starts to shine. I do understand that no BC for the PS3 is kinda a let down, but I don't really see it as a big deal. Just dust off your PS2 if you wanna play a game or somethiing.. either that our out of the 120 million people worldwide that own one, you're bound to know someone who'll let you borrow theirs.

While it will make a lot of money for Sony still, it is pretty underhanded to be like 'We're taking the PS2 out of the 399 PS3 because you can get really cheap PS2 still'. IF/when they ever make software bc on the 40 gb version will be the only time they can really save face.

Sony's answer to the PS3 not being backward compatible anymore......make people buy a PS2 for really cheap to play all of your great games on and have the PS3 for the Blu-Ray movies until they release that killer app for their new system......Sony will be around for a long time to come.....and their pockets will continue to fatten.....here's to hoping that killer app comes really fast.....Final Fantasy 13!!!!!!

I stil have my old ps2 from launch. And it works perfectly. Though I will not get this new one as I have a 60gig ps3. Titanicles you dont understand do you? Bue ray means better, bigger games. I never understand why someone bashes what is the best format for putting games on. it loads well and carries the most space.

It's interesting that people still complain about the lack of PS3 games. There's over 100 games out now. How many does it take before fanboys stop saying "No games, no games!" Someone else mentioned a lack of people on the PSN. The only problem I've had with the PSN is full servers all the time (warhawk). Anyway, the PS2 is still selling. Sony would be crazy to abandon it. It's an excellent example of consumerism in North America when people think the PS2 should be set adrift on an ice flow at this point just because there is newer teck out. It doesn't matter that the PS2 is a solid system with an excellent price tag and huge library of games, gotta keep fresh, keep new! Buy those new TV's, sell your car because it's 3 years old and upgrade, lineup for the newest cell phone when there's nothing wrong with your old phone. The rest of the world isn't necessarily wired the same way. Expect the PS2 to be around for some time yet.

haha did you just call the PS2 a turd? I like how you mention a dozen games and then say if it weren't for those games PS2 would be nothing. That's like saying if it wasn't for halo, gears, forza, pgr3, and the tomclancy games 360 would be nothing. it would work if there was only one thing but when you name a bunch of games it doesn't work.

I care about blu-ray, I like movies anyways, they'll do fine. after this fall and winter there will be plenty of games. we are in november a few big games already came out and it only gets crazier in the next few weeks. You guys act like for it to be a success that they have to sell billions in the first year. At worst after six or seven years they'll break even. If the gamecube was a success in the same generation as the PS2 then the PS3 will do just fine even if they are behind the 360 and Wii. you don't have to be first to make money.

No-one cares about Blu-Ray, what they want is a good set of games. That is why the PS2 sold so much, because of a good selection of games. It wasn't the best console technically, but it had by far the greatest selection of titles.

"nearly everyone of those games, except in the case of haze and uncharted, is an ported game available on other systems." Sure they are all available on the 360, but they are all available on the PS3 too. and with the recent price drops the PS3 is just as affordable as the 360, (if not more considering what you get). and most games are running smooth on each system now. The only argument at this point would be that the PSN has very few people playing online...but that will change in time.

"why do they keep releasing new things abt ps2 and not make some new changes to ps3... make new games, price cut etc.." Everyone does realize that the people who manufacture these PS2's are not involved in making games, right? and anyway Ratchet just came out, Cod4 just came out, assassin's creed, K&L next week, uncharted the week after, haze a couple weeks after that, socom is probably coming too. a new wipeout soon, if that's not enough you are spoiled. And there were just mulitiple price cuts...$399 now, quit btching so much. for only $50 more than a 360 you get a bigger hdd, wi-fi, and blu-ray.

nearly everyone of those games, except in the case of haze and uncharted, is an ported game available on other systems...exclusives do not MAKE a systems but they sure help as theres more unique reasons to buy X system to play X game. personally I think price vs game catalog is one of the biggest faults of the ps3, but with the recent price drop perhaps sony will be able to make up some ground. im still hoping not as im not a sony fan :P go wii AND xbox AND pc!

I'm saying Sony has the strongest first party development houses. I think after a few years of games building up people will see the big collection of games and think about the PS3 especially when new systems are back up to $400. and especially if they get their online situation in order by then. I think their first party games are definitely a big driving force behind the ps2. look at gt4, singstar, the ratchet games (insomniac is pretty much first party), god of war, shadow of the colossus, there are a ton more, sure there are big 3rd party games that help too like the gta series, and rock band but the PS3 has those too. What ever though... in the end, I just hope they join forces, sony producing the hardware and microsoft producing the software. cause right now each company has a long way to go to catch up to the other in each area.

I hate people who say the ps3 isnt getting enough games. Look at the ammount coming in November and december. Haze, Time Crisis 4, Uncharted, COD4, Assassins Creed, Kane&lynch. But yeah, i was expecting the new ps2 model to be super slimmed down. but thats just a dream...

lol. Maybe Sony are releasing a new ps2 model because the ps3 is doin so crap. I wish they would give up on the ps2 cause they seriously gotta keep there attension to the ps3 otherwise its gonna end up being very unsuccessful. Games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ps3 needs more games. Blue ray just isnt enough to sell this console and i remember sony saying that they are losing money on the console cause it costs them more to make then sell or somethin but they would make up for it with software sales and at the moment thats just not happenin.

Space-Q said: "You gotta remember...despite all of the 3rd party support that the 360 has. Microsoft just doesn't have the first party talent that sony has built over the years...yet. maybe ten years from now but not yet. And that is what pulls in sony customers." I don't quite follow you on this one....are you saying that Sony's first party studios are what's driving the sales of PS2s right now? And hence will drive PS3 sales in the future? What first-party games are driving hardware sales now for PS2 or PS3? I would argue that this is precisely the problem with PS3 right now. Sony needs more quality games to drive hardware sales. I am a prime example: I'm a moderate to hardcore gamer (using this term loosely); I own four consoles now and have been gaming for 20 years. I have the financial means to buy as many games/consoles as I want. And yet I have't bought a PS3 yet. And the reason is the lack of quality games. Speaking of the future: the damage to the PS3 is being done right now. Developers are rethinking their current and near-future projects to focus on consoles that have an established user base. Remember they won't sell games to consumers who don't have hardware to play it on. It is critical for Sony to get it's install base customers up now so that developers can rationalize maintaining support. I do not believe that the PS3 can survive on 1st-party titles alone.
