New PS2, PSP models revealed

"At this rate, the PS3 may very well go the way of Sega's Dreamcast." sure they aren't selling like the wii now but what happens 5 or 6 years from now when the PS3 is $120? people are gonna go, "oh I liked PS1 and PS2 let me try that out, instead of paying $400-500 for the next xbox and PS4" If they are still doing it with the PS2 even though a 360 is $270 then I think the PS3 will do just fine in the future. You gotta remember...despite all of the 3rd party support that the 360 has. Microsoft just doesn't have the first party talent that sony has built over the years...yet. maybe ten years from now but not yet. And that is what pulls in sony customers.

I'm sure the PSP color will come over here soon enough. People love choices. Is that really a new edition of PS2 or a refinement. In other words, would they sell this under a different name or just replace the old slim unit with this one? It's kind of sad; if a company has a mind to keep a product alive they try their hardest to keep interest (GBA micro anyone?), but usually submit to the writing on the wall. Here, Sony could use a shift in interest, but PS2 won't die. So they figure they might as well continue to refine it. It might start hobbling along in sales by next year, but it may actually break the 10 year mark.

Sony should drop support for the PS2. They should still sell it but start phasing it out. They need the PS3 to be a success and with them still pushing the PS2, it's not going to happen. The PS2 is a decent (ish) console but I think it's been milked enough!

People are forgetting that Sony made PS3's here in the UK with no BC, hence this is a good move (for 40gb owners anyway) there's still a lot PS2 owners that Sony just can't brush off because of the PS3.

Honestly, that red PSP looks pretty sweet. although the black one still looks the coolest...

If Sony really wanted to shift emphasis onto the PS3 they wouldn't bother with launching new models of the PS2. If Sony themselves are intent on keeping the PS2 going, as they are showing here, you can't blame developers for staying with the PS2 ahead of the PS3.

Wow, a red PSP. Big freaking deal. Why don't they just release faceplates like MS does for the 360? And I thought the new PS2 sounded interesting, but I think all they did was move the fans around or something. I thought the unit would be even smaller than the slim one, but it's exactly the same. Sony needs to focus on the PS3. Both the PS2 and PSP are doing fine without the "improvements." At this rate, the PS3 may very well go the way of Sega's Dreamcast.

How awesome would it be if they finally stopped spending money on making new types of ps2 so they could justify a more reasonable price drop on one of their quality ps3's?

What the heck?? A different PS2 is being released?? Would someone explain to me what the point is, shouldn't Sony be focusing on pushing out the PS3 and getting newer/better games for it. I don't own a PS3 (XBox360 owner) but Microsoft sure isn't realeasing different coloured original XBox's? And I'm still waiting for a new version of the PSP to be released, maybe with a second analog controller....no wonder Sony is in trouble on the console market. It doesn't take someone with a Bachelors in business to figure out it's time to upgrade.

yea, a white ps2 wud av looked cool in my room but wen i got my wii, i boxed my gamecube, when i got my 360 elite, i boxed my xbox and wen i get my ps3 60 gb or 80 gb, i will box my ps2 for ever. its a headache having machines all over the place considering i need extra power outlets for all these consoles as well as a psp charger, a ds lite charger, a mobile fone, 2 PCs, a printer, scanner and a laptop. haha

This is why sony have taken out BC in the PS3. Doing this gives them the oppertunity to sell two different platforms successfully. This is good business. But I sure would like to have a Playstation experience all on one system. Its traditional for a Playstation to play the previous consoles' games. And especially with the move up to a plasma tv, the old ps2 connections are quite out-dated on a 1080p set. The trouble with the ps2 now is that the games are half the price of the ps3 games, so all you will get on the ps2 for the rest of its life are new games with no inspiration or budget, or just lower-quality crossover games like fifa etc. The real innovation will come from the ps3 games, then the ps2 wil start to become out-dated. Personally, I think it would be better for them to include the ps2 inside the ps3 - it gives developers more users to sell the ps2 games to - plus they can still develop a ps2 title, but use the ps3 features like sixaxis and the internet service. I think it would be a great idea for sony and devs to move onto the ps3. If the emotion engine was inside the ps3 - it would be able to keep a low budget software catalogue, but keep them up to date. For example - imagine the game BUZZ. You can plug in the buzzers into the ps3, and the game is an actual ps2 disc. The added bonus of playing it on the ps3 is that it retains the ps2's price (nobody wants to pay full price for a ps3 game of buzz..) but it can also use the internet service as a means to download new minigames, music, questions etc.

I'm glad for his as my PS2 is on its last legs (was an original with 2/3 laser replacements) and a new model would be great! Especially since I have no intention of buying a BC-less PS3 anytime soon!

That's why Sony has a problem selling PS3,i mean honestly-they are rewamping their old consoles,while they should be making new games for PS3-i did not buy PS3 to watch Blu ray movies

Wow can't believe Sony are still pumping out the PS2's...... And why not? It's still selling I thinik I might pick up the new version as I've still the original from launch.

sony is still supporting the ps2---isnt that sweet--unlike that other company that canned their original console(xbox) months before the 360 was released---and people whining about "more colors"--how many colors are they of the gameboy advance and nintendo ds--then few months later the nintendo ds lite--oh lets not forget to mention how many there is of the 360----white black green--and interchangeable faceplates (yippee---not)---people need to quit riding sonys arse and live on--let the people that want true gaming experience but ps3 and psp--

The Deep Red PSP looks great. But I don't see any sense in releasing a 3rd version of the PS2, just because it has built in AC adapter?

wat abt the ps3 then... why do they keep releasing new things abt ps2 and not make some new changes to ps3... make new games, price cut etc..

Today? I saw a white ps2 package deal witht singstar and microphone over a week ago at a walmart or zellers.. also saw it on saturday at toys r us.. jumping on the release date for sales?

I have an older model PS2 that won't even play all my games. It wont play all my PS1 games, either! I actually would like to get the $99 PS2 when it hits the US. I'll wait until the PS3 goes down in price again before considering buying it. I'm always a late adopter.

$139 for a PS2!? come on it should be at most $100 maybe $115 at the most.

This is annoying. Sony wont give europe backwards compatability with tghe new 40GB PS3, saying its no longer that important, but they are happy to announce a new PS2 here that will cost them even more money to make then just letting people have BC. Either people are going to stick with their old PS2's and ignore these ones, or wont buy one anyway because they will be moving onto Ps3 and will probably keep their old PS2 if they have the 40GB PS3...

I have an Aqua Blue PS2 by myself (it's not slim - the big one) and a black PSP I don't need any of these but hey - some people who don't have these consoles yet might find it useful. If you don't need them that doesn't mean someone else doesn't need them. Just an opinion :)

well, maybe I should do what I didn't do with the DS, and wait until they have cooler colors :P besides, I'm not big on the PSP anymore, as I thought Sony would have more PS3/PSP games on PSN, like the cool PS1 games they seemed like they were going to put out but didn't

I've already got 2 PSP's that gather dust, so I won't be buying a third, I've got a PS3 that actually plays PS2 games, so I don't need a new PS2.

Well I can answer that quetion, we ain't getting the red PSP. Look at the PS2. In 7 years, we only got 2 colors. There were ATLEAST 7 different colored PS2s that I know of.
