New PS4 Delivers "Ultra-High Definition Resolution Graphics," Report Says

Yet another report claims Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4.

Though Sony has yet to make an official announcement, the evidence for a more powerful PlayStation 4 console continues to mount. The Wall Street Journal today backed up what reports from Kotaku and Eurogamer said earlier: Sony is working on a new version of the PS4 that can handle "higher-end gaming experiences." This includes virtual reality, the site said, citing sources.

This new system, which will reportedly boast "enhanced graphics and power," will live alongside the existing PS4, with games working for both platforms, according to the WSJ.

No Caption Provided

"Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power," it said. "Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog."

The WSJ also reports that the new console--which wasn't given a name but is apparently being referred to as the PS4 4K--will be announced before the October launch of PlayStation VR, sources said. The system will be able to power "ultra-high definition resolution graphics."

Sony itself has admitted that PlayStation VR, which is powered by the PS4, may be technically inferior to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which run on higher-end PCs. The improved PS4 would help close the gap, the WSJ said.

It's also claimed in the WSJ report that Sony's ambition with the new system is "to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual-reality experience."

Analysts quoted in the WSJ's story today said continuing to offer the standard PS4 alongside the more powerful unit will help Sony on its path to giving players--casual and hardcore alike--more options in the PlayStation ecosystem.

A price for the new, more powerful PS4 was not mentioned in this report.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new gaming hardware. Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased that, "You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Traditionally, console gamers have to wait many years for new hardware. For example, the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, with the PS4 coming in 2013. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005, while the Xbox One came out in 2013.

Sony declined to comment.

If this report is accurate, including the pre-October announcement, one possibly venue for the reveal could be E3 in June. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Sony's hardware plans.

What do you do when you run out of paid for services and peripherals to sell to PS4 owners? Sell the players another PS4 and make their old one redundant

If this serves as a 4K Blu-ray player, that would make it an easy buying decision for me. I've been holding off just for this reason.

They will achieve 4k with temporal reconstruction from four previous 1080pp 4x MSAA frames, or as Mary Kish would say, "no- it's 1080p."

I'd only care if they bump current games up to 60 FPS, otherwise I'd get a PC instead.

This scares me. Devs are going to want to make games that are better optimized - or worse, only made for the PS4. Also kind of like a slap in the face to all of the peoples who recently bought a PS4 this last holiday...

Its to early to be releasing a redesign but not surprising I think both Sony and MS underestimated what the consumer wants in the next gen consoles.

Meh, I'm not a graphics whore so this makes no difference to me as long as the games are being released for both PS4 consoles.

They will be.

That's the part that people seem to have difficulty grasping.

The game will detect which revision hardware its running and apply the settings accordingly.

Android apps have doing this for years

I don't think they're going about this the right way, they should find a solution that allows the nearly 40 million current ps4 owners the ability to upgrade the current machine without replacing, otherwise you get a fragmented community regardless of whether the software catalog is shared.

Sony should put this back on the shelf and focus on building a real 4k gaming machine to come out in 2 or 3 years without alienating their current fans.

@suicidesn0wman: here's a thought.... this isn't on the shelf, it isn't even confirmed and everyone is getting upset about rumors and speculation... i work R&D at my place of employment and there are many many things we develop and prototype that are never released to the public or sold to customers, i think people need to just settle down and wait for the actual announcement from Sony

@suicidesn0wman: yeah it's too soon. It's going to make the PS4 owners feel like PS3 owners. "Oh... yeah I guess I was enjoying it but... now look how much better things run on the 4.5... ugh I just bought this thing though... maybe I'll wait a year?"

@suicidesn0wman: Technically it won't alienate people since the games should run on both still. I mean why would it fragment the community just because some can run it slightly better or on better screens.

@TimmyDKJR: Games may run on both systems for sure. But development will be focused on the higher end model. Eventually you'll find a situation where even gameplay features are affected on the lower end system, not just graphics. Look what happened with GTA V and Shadow of Mordor on the old gen. The gameplay features were toned down because of memory limitations. Eventually after a few years it'll happen between the PS4 and the PS4 4K as well.

@TimmyDKJR: People don't like spending $400 on a product only to find out they didn't get your best product. Makes the consumer feel like they've wasted $400, which for many people is a lot of money.

I would hope the ps4 plus would have the option to up framerate and texture/shader detail instead of upscaling to 4k. I care more about framerate being 60 fps than moving to 4k and it seems a lot of people on this site agree with me that framerate is king for many games these days. If we can have both then great.

The first thing that comes to my mind is the Xbox one elite controller, basically the same thing but slightly better for those who are willing to pay for it.

@adsparky: I can see the comparison, though while that worked for Xbox, the price range is completely different. Might not be as successful for Sony, may even be damaging to their brand if not executed perfectly.

@ZamboniGamer: Because I imagine they aren't going to create new operating systems for these things, and they'll be sharing a library (at least for a while) with their weaker predecessors.

Definitely PS4 had a premature launch, just to stand against PS3 failures. Not by chance most of that generation games are remasters. Maybe "next gen" will come next october.

It's going to upscale to 4K, provide some slightly better textures, and probably squeeze out a few more fps. Nothing really that divisive.

Considering I don't have 4K TV, I'm still torn on whether to get the new model.

If this trend continues... every one should move to PC. What's the point of owning consoles if they are just going to release a better one in a couple years? Wasn't that the strength of consoles? Stability?

@stickybun: It's about the exclusives for me. That and I get distracted by the internet easily on my pc so I like having the separate device meant only for gaming.

@darksynced: I agree to an extent... but exclusives are fewer and further between now. Many games that I care about on either console are also on PC. I've always been a huge fan of consoles... but this gen is by far my least favourite. This news is another reason to add to the list.

@stickybun: True...but they are still there to some degree. Like there has been Infamous and Bloodborne already, and I want Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted 4 soon. While there aren't many, frankly it would still kill me to miss out on even those few games since I love the franchises so much.

@darksynced: Yeah I will miss Uncharted this generation, but it doesn't really matter too much. There are so many good games that come out for PC to keep you plenty busy. I was initially upset when I didn't have gamecube because I loved the Zelda series so much. Now I have a Wii U, with arguably the best exclusives this generation, and I still play my PC way more.

I love Uncharted and I loved the Last of US, but in the end, it just isn't worth 400 bucks when I could just spend that money towards my PC and instantly get a huge upgrade to my gaming experience, and it would cover more games as well.

If you're a dedicated gamer, the PC offers the best experience in all regards. It even has pretty good couch play capabilities with the steam link now. Consoles still do offer the best couch co-op experience, something that is common for sports games and if you have a situation with roomates or you have children who like to play. I do still concede that advantage.

@Bryjoered07: I agree with some of the points you mentioned, PC is superior in every aspect compared to consoles, the issue with couch PCs is the games you can play on them, if I liked FPSs and play on a steam machine with a controller against keyboard and mouse then I'm gonna have a bad time.

PC is the best medium for gaming, cheap games, controllable graphics settings and easily upgradable, the only downside, at least for me, is the 9 hours I spend working on a PC, to come back home and sit the same way for the remaining hours of my day is just unbearable.

@stickybun: Hasn't it always been like that since the PS2 with the slim edition, even though that is only appearance. PS3 and Xbox360 got bigger harddrives, and the 360 got its noise reduced :)
But no, i don't like to play on a pc, I would prefer console even if the price was the same.

@stickybun: Well, my brothers newer xbox360 edition would play games with better stability/less stuttering than my xbox360 arcade version.
Edit: Could of course be something else that would cause that, but there is a noticeable difference :)

@souxoux: But this one is supposedly meant to improve performance which is where the concern comes in. What happens when they design their exclusives around the superior console? It's quite a bit different than those other versions that were largely cosmetic.

Honest question, outside of that sort of stability and longevity, what does the console have over the PC?

@Jasurim: Well they have better exclusives. Pretty much every single one of my favorite games you can ONLY get on console. IF all those games were on PC I would very well go all out PC. Though honestly PC is kind of pretentious, they rarely have a proper save file system in games, the spec requirements require constant upgrades despite the graphics not having improved at all over a game that looks just as good and required lower specs, and yeah...I like consoles more.

@darksynced: Fair enough on that front. I love PS4 exclusives, it's exactly why I bought a PS4, but that's also why I potentially wouldn't be happy with this sort of trend continuing. I already have one PC, I don't need to be worrying about those sort of things (upgrades) with a console as well lol.
