New PS4 Delivers "Ultra-High Definition Resolution Graphics," Report Says

Yet another report claims Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4.

642 Comments

Though Sony has yet to make an official announcement, the evidence for a more powerful PlayStation 4 console continues to mount. The Wall Street Journal today backed up what reports from Kotaku and Eurogamer said earlier: Sony is working on a new version of the PS4 that can handle "higher-end gaming experiences." This includes virtual reality, the site said, citing sources.

This new system, which will reportedly boast "enhanced graphics and power," will live alongside the existing PS4, with games working for both platforms, according to the WSJ.

No Caption Provided

"Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power," it said. "Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog."

The WSJ also reports that the new console--which wasn't given a name but is apparently being referred to as the PS4 4K--will be announced before the October launch of PlayStation VR, sources said. The system will be able to power "ultra-high definition resolution graphics."

Sony itself has admitted that PlayStation VR, which is powered by the PS4, may be technically inferior to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which run on higher-end PCs. The improved PS4 would help close the gap, the WSJ said.

It's also claimed in the WSJ report that Sony's ambition with the new system is "to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual-reality experience."

Analysts quoted in the WSJ's story today said continuing to offer the standard PS4 alongside the more powerful unit will help Sony on its path to giving players--casual and hardcore alike--more options in the PlayStation ecosystem.

A price for the new, more powerful PS4 was not mentioned in this report.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new gaming hardware. Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased that, "You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Traditionally, console gamers have to wait many years for new hardware. For example, the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, with the PS4 coming in 2013. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005, while the Xbox One came out in 2013.

Sony declined to comment.

If this report is accurate, including the pre-October announcement, one possibly venue for the reveal could be E3 in June. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Sony's hardware plans.

This action of releasing this high-end console was deliberately executed to make people repurchase their product. Why couldn't they have done this with the original unit, make it a high-end product at the start? Playing the same game already purchased for the original console on the new one is just Sony's way of trying to soften the blow and not divide the market further.

@tmthywtsn:

They could not do it at the start of the gen because the new AMD chips were not available. You can only make something out of the tech that is currently available. Now that the AMD tech has moved on, Sony could wait 5 years and give you it in the PS5, but they are giving you the option to use the new AMD chip on an updated PS4. The choice is yours. Do you need the extra quality or are you happy with what you have.

Everybody is different. I'm going to upgrade. It would be nice if Sony would give me a trade in on my present PS4 but if not I'll just keep it as a spare that I can use if the more powerful PS4 goes in for a repair.

Sony already tried this last gen with their consoles launching at 499 and 599

we all see how well that worked

@logicbomb_DE: Would have worked better if the system didn't have OtherOS resulting in some organizations buying them to use them as supercomputers.

This is a smart move. Last generation lasted WAY too long. And last generation consoles were actually powerful when the launched. These consoles were way behind current technology when they launched so incremental upgrades are good. X86 is scalable so they can develop for both versions of PS4 at the same time with no extra resources. It's just like PC. They don't build a version of the game for each graphics card available.

@rlg5150:

I agree. Last gen was way too long. This allows the best of both worlds. Those with limited cash can buy the standard PS4 and have a great games console that will last the full gen. Those with more free cash who feel constrained with hardware locked to a long gen can now upgrade to higher quality.

Both both consoles stay within the same gen and play the same game disc. The devs just create a game with high quality assets and make two optimisations, one for each console. Each console has the game adjusted to what the console can handle. Yes the new games will target PS4.5 but only in the sense that the assets will be higher quality so the new console can run them on max, while the standard PS4 has the settings scaled down to where they are now. It's a really excellent idea.

Of course none of this is conformed by Sony. It would be a huge joke on everyone if the new PS4 was just a slim with a bigger hard drive, no extra power and a 4K multimedia optical drive. That would really suck. If that is the case, Sony would have missed a big opportunity to increase their domination of the console market and would be wise to abort it to make the proper PS4.5 that gamers want.

But I believe it's the real deal because multiple sources are now confirming the features that fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. It just makes too much sense to be untrue. Sony proved they had a strong vision when designing the PS4 and this continues to innovate on that basic idea.

@justerthought: just thinking about this now, but, there is a possible drawback: higher end assets = higher cost of development = games going up anothe $5-10. Not too bad given the quality, BUT, not really fair to PS4 Low owners who won't see a difference either way.

@rlg5150: No, but it means the developers would have to put in more work for the same pay. Plus, console specs don't need to be anywhere near as powerful as PC specs because with one unified set of hardware developers can optimize for that set hardware. Just look at minimum specs needed for a game on a PC compared to the same game on Xbox 360 you need a PC 4 times more powerful than a 360 just to get the PC version to run and look like the 360 version.

Digital Foundry has shown that most games can be match PS4 settings and fps on GTX 750 Ti or GTX 950

"Xbox 360 you need a PC 4 times more powerful than a 360 just to get the PC version to run and look like the 360 version."

DX9/DX10 games on Geforce 8800GT can run at better settings than Xbox 360. Even modern games (that still support DX10) like battlefeild 4 and Dragon age Inquisition can run better than xbox 360

@rabih55555:

Yes the PC wastes power because it's a heavy multipurpose machine. The devs claim the PS4 is 60% more powerful than a PC of the same hardware spec, so PC gamers have to overkill the spec in order to better the PS4. That's expensive because they enter the area of diminishing returns and can end up buying a new GPU that costs the same as a whole PS4. And that upgrade is not permanent because in 2 years time the new games will require another expensive upgrade to keep performance on parity.

Making a game work on multiple PC hardware configurations means you have to compromise and that dilutes the performance of the game on PC even further. Sony will only need to make 2 hardware optimisations, one for PS4 and one for PS4.5, and both those optimisations are closely bound together by tight standards within a closed system that is easy to manage and predict.

I don't get the hate, if it's fully backwards compatible then it's no problem. I personally think 3-5 year is a nice renewal time. This is almost like how it use to be in the good old days.

@vampyren: Its not about the backward compatibility, it is about whether new games designed to take advantage of the new hardware will be compatible with the current PS4, kinda like how some games designed for the New 3DS don't work on the original 3DS. So it's more of a forward-compatibility problem.

@greaseman1985:

You say it's not about backwards compatibility and then you give examples of backwards compatibility not working. Of course it's about backwards compatibility, but it isn't a problem here. The PS4.5 stays within the PS4 gen. The PS4 gen games will work on both. New games will have to target the superior PS4.5 so it can run them on max, and then scale them back down to the PS4 level. So nothing changes. People are all bummed out over nothing. It's entirely optional. You stay as you are or you upgrade.

If you had a Sony 720p TV and your mate upgraded to a Sony 1080p TV, you can't get all bummed out claiming he should not have 1080p unless you get it for nothing. You would still be playing your PS4 through your 720p TV same as usual, and he would play his through his 1080p TV. His choice does not affect you so it's none of your concern. That's how the PS4.5 works.

None of this was possible with the CELL. Changing the PS4 to a PC architecture allows this to happen transparently.

@greaseman1985: I dont see why it would work any different from a PC now that the new consoles are getting the same parts and architecture of "PC".

3DS is a different beast, there is storage limitation as well as hardware.

The thing is technology moves fast so a 3 year refresh rate is not really that strange, just look at smartphones, each year there is a new model that tops the previous model. Games are both back and forward compatible for the most part. I'm not saying its good that consoles get replaced to often but if you remember in the old days Nintendo/Sega did the same thing.

@greaseman1985: this is where microsoft has a great advantage with their windows app being universal . so if microsoft went the upgrade-able console like they hinted you already know all games will be compatible.

@rlg5150: Consoles and PCs are designed differently. The reasons consoles are so popular is the ease of use and the fact games work out of the box. Turning them into PCs where you have to sit there and find the best graphical settings will not sit well with the great majority of console gamers.

@greaseman1985:

yes, but there would be no graphical settings that are visible to the user (in the PC tweakable sense)

if the game detects the new PS4 model, then it will apply the HIGH settings

if the "old ps4 is detected, then it will automatically run at MID settings

it really is that simple

I'm all for a refresh of the current consoles, it seems like both Microsoft and Sony realize they made a mistake by not making the current console much more powerful than the previous generation. However, if Sony and Microsoft are seeing this as a money grab opportunity to refresh their consoles every year, I think that's going to be a mistake as it will fragment the console community and defeat the purpose of consoles. I sincerely hope this is not the case.

Is not possible that this is just a ps4 that has the additional procesding unit that comes bundled with PS VR already built into the console itself (rather then needing the additional unit that the PS VR has).

@danielg1982: its possible, but the vr box that comes with the psvr has already been confirmed that it will not improve the graphics or performace of non psvr games. So if this new ps4k is going to be more powerful there has to be differences

We will see,if this will be really as good as some guys are saying!!,if the information of this article is true, it is what i use to call "Sony kidding with our money,or costumer money indeed".PS4 was launched in 2013 and Sony wants to launch the PS4.5 or whatever probably in the third trimester of 2017.The major part of PS4 games in this moment are running at 1080p/30fps,some games are running at 1080p/60fps with great quality and in general very fluid,but in several games in certain moments we can perfectly see some frames drops.This is not happens because Sony wants,this happens because the PS4 Hardware limitations.Sony says that PS4.5 will be able to run every game at 1080p/60fps and some features like movies at 4k/20or30fps,ok it is normal,this console will have better graphics,better dynamics and even better improvements but it worth's the money?..do you think that in 3 years and half, Sony has the ability to build a system much better than PS4?Do not get me wrong,i love Sony and love PS4,is a magnificent console which i love to play,however and i hope to be wrong,this new console probably will be trash!!!...and for Sony my friends,this is will be "easy money"..:D

@ltjohnnyrico: people who already bought a ps4 don't want the same thing happening with ps4 as it id with the New 3DS where the hyrule warriors game is out on both but is not very playable on the old 3ds, getting in the ultra cinematic 15fps territories

@rlg5150: Consoles are not PCs, the architecture being the same is irrelevant. Console games are optimized by the developer before being shipped out, optimization does not occur on the console and you can't choose your graphical settings like on a PC.
