New PS4 Delivers "Ultra-High Definition Resolution Graphics," Report Says

Yet another report claims Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4.

Though Sony has yet to make an official announcement, the evidence for a more powerful PlayStation 4 console continues to mount. The Wall Street Journal today backed up what reports from Kotaku and Eurogamer said earlier: Sony is working on a new version of the PS4 that can handle "higher-end gaming experiences." This includes virtual reality, the site said, citing sources.

This new system, which will reportedly boast "enhanced graphics and power," will live alongside the existing PS4, with games working for both platforms, according to the WSJ.

No Caption Provided

"Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power," it said. "Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog."

The WSJ also reports that the new console--which wasn't given a name but is apparently being referred to as the PS4 4K--will be announced before the October launch of PlayStation VR, sources said. The system will be able to power "ultra-high definition resolution graphics."

Sony itself has admitted that PlayStation VR, which is powered by the PS4, may be technically inferior to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which run on higher-end PCs. The improved PS4 would help close the gap, the WSJ said.

It's also claimed in the WSJ report that Sony's ambition with the new system is "to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual-reality experience."

Analysts quoted in the WSJ's story today said continuing to offer the standard PS4 alongside the more powerful unit will help Sony on its path to giving players--casual and hardcore alike--more options in the PlayStation ecosystem.

A price for the new, more powerful PS4 was not mentioned in this report.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new gaming hardware. Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased that, "You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Traditionally, console gamers have to wait many years for new hardware. For example, the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, with the PS4 coming in 2013. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005, while the Xbox One came out in 2013.

Sony declined to comment.

If this report is accurate, including the pre-October announcement, one possibly venue for the reveal could be E3 in June. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Sony's hardware plans.

Well, I would definitely buy it! It's kinda like how people spend $800+ on the new iPhone every year or so and not much really changes model to model. It's only around $500 which isn't much at all for something I use everyday after work. I mean, save $25 a week starting now, and you'll be able to buy it in 5 months. It's not that hard.

@jayskoon93: how many people pay $800 on a new phone every other year? not too many people because you get that new phone at the discounted new contract price which is usually free

@sodapoppimpski: I was thinking of something relatable I could use as an example. Simply put, people spend a lot of money on new/updated things all the time, so this is really no different or surprising. Regardless of if they're much different or not, they just have to have it because since it's new and that's the only reason.

@sodapoppimpski: Agreed. I hope it doesn't tear the PS community in half, but who knows. It may be similar to how PC gaming works. Every person has different hardware and software, but can still play together.

Ultra High Definition is anything above 1080p

just like Hi Def is technically any resolution (reasonably) higher than 480i

You expect more capacity and sleeker looking versions.

You don't expect to be squeezed out of playing games by model upgrades.

It's why you buy a console.

This is total bullshit. Not everyone can afford a new PS4 whenever Sony feel like wheeling out a new upgrade.

New consoles, fine, but not new models of the same console. **** that.

Even if they do eventually start making PS4 games that will only run on the newer, more powerful version, it'd be a few years before we even saw them. Nobody is going to make games for a platform nobody owns, and they'll need time to actually develop them after the hardware is made available.

I'm going to trade up depending on spec etc .. how can you say you can't afford something that has no price tag at present ? Trade in value for PS4's isnt too bad where im from.

@NTenseify: friend, if that turns out to be the only asset for owning one... More power to those guys.

Somehow, I suspect we'll be seeing a very large quantity of PS 4.5 exclusive titles by the end of this consoles life.

That's a pretty unpleasant bit if marketing right there if it happens.

spewing, I bought a new tv WHEN I got the ps4 a few months after release. Since it was 1080p I thought why spend an extra $2k for a 4k tv with no 4k content available, get the latest best 1080p tv in the market at the time which still cost me over $2k but thought its a better investment than paying $4k+ for a 4k tv I wouldnt use, wait for the ps5 get a new tv then in 8 years time. Nope now they drop this bomb. I want the new console cause I love my tvs more than consoles but now its just not worth splurging extra for a new console and new tv, stuff that

This is a mistake.

If they're going to go with the smartphone/tablet model of a new release every year, I'm not going to buy any more launch consoles. I'm going to wait a minimum of 3 years if not 5 before I buy a console, and skip all the early gen ones.

Or I'm just going to stick to PC gaming.

The draw of consoles is that you can buy one any time, and be assured that it will play all games that will ever be made for that console, looking the best it can ever look on that platform. There's no way I'm going to be spending the $400 two or three times on one console instead of just purchasing it once. If you own both PS4 and XB1, that could mean buying six consoles in one generation!

@lostn: I seriously doubt they'll be releasing new hardware every year. Even if they do, nobody will need to upgrade annually (not too many people buy a new iPad every year either) because no developers will be making games just for the newest, most powerful hardware. Just like how mobile apps tend to work on the last few generations of phone or tablet.

@Mogan: I never suggested people will buy a new one every year. But that doesn't mean they can't make one every year.

Apple releases a new iPad and iPhone every year, but they don't intend for their owners to buy a new one every year. They expect them to get replaced every 2 years. So why do they make one every year instead of every 2 years? Becuase if you bought your first iPad on an odd year (e.g. 2011), you will be on an odd year upgrade schedule (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017). If you bought it on an even year (2010), you'll be on an even year upgrade schedule (2010, 2012, 2014, 2016). They have to have a new product for everyone, no matter what year they first bought in, otherwise someone will say, there's no new model this year, so I won't have to spend any money until next year. So Apple loses money. If Apple only released new products on even years, everyone will eventually move to an even year upgrade cycle, and sales will tank during the odd years.

That's the biggest reason for annual releases. They need to have something flashy to drive sales every year. This is in spite of the expectation that people will NOT be buying a new model every year.

The consoles can still go the same way.

No, developers will not make games exclusively for the new model. But eventually they will phase out the lowest model and new games will not run on that anymore, so if you didn't upgrade after 2 or 3 years, your current model will be obsolete.

So let's say a new model releases every year starting this year. There will not be any 2017 games that require the 2017 mode. But maybe in 2018, the games will not support the 2013-2015 models. And in 2019, they will not support the 2016 model. These numbers were made up for illustration purposes only. The concept is what's important.
If they use this model, there will never be a PS5. It will just be PS4 forever with iterative upgrades each year, and you're expected to get a new one every 3 years or so if you want to continue playing the latest games. A 2020 model might play 2022 games, but a 2019 model might not.

Is it to have better visuals, or just to put games in 4k? If it's just for 4k, that's not worth upgrading. I'm leaving out the VR thing. I don't know what the make of that I suppose.

@NTM23: It's not realistic that this machine can play games in 4k. It might be 1080p upscaled, or it might run simple looking games (namely indies) in 4K.

Even a GTX 980 Titan has difficulty running 4K, and that card alone costs more than double the price of two entire PS4s.

I don't have a 4k tv, and probably never will due to my poor vision, but this is still quite intriguing. Most likely faster load times and fewer frame rate drops. Not to mention the possibility of special graphics options down the road for PS4k owners.

Makes me glad I haven't bought a PS4 yet. As long as the price point isn't ridiculous, and it has a 1TB hard drive out of the box, I'd buy one.

I will not be getting a slightly more powerful PS4 that will still gonna have problem running 1080P games and even more problems running 4K games. The 4k technology is still expensive and is as expensive or more expensive than what a PS4 would cost you right now. A good PS4 4K console will probably cost you some $500 to nearly 600 dollar. I can't see many people go out and buy a $500 to nearly $600 dollar console upgrade.

I don't understand why Sony would want to potentially lose its PS4 base. The PS4 has a huge install base, they make royalties on the games released for it, and this new console might just split the communities up.

Sony is just setting up the backdoor excuse for the ps4 being incapable of running psvr properly. So hey run out and get another $450 ps4k that will still be underpowered compared to a $800 pc you could have bought instead

@sodapoppimpski: Well, duh.

As a pc gamer, the PS4 hasn't impressed me graphically at all. That's not the point, though. There's games you can't get on pc, such as Sony's first party stuff, and EA's sports titles. Those alone make me want one eventually.

In a perfect world, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony would have all their games on pc, and consoles wouldn't exist anymore, but that's not the case.

@DrunkenPunk800: Never will go to PC until Microsoft and Nintendo stop making consoles. And when that day comes Ill just stop gaming. PC are still the minority and the majority don't want to dish out $800-2000 for a gaming PC. That's just the simple facts. Consoles are not going anywhere and they are getting better.

I have a PC for work and school, I like billions of others DO NOT want to plug in our PC to our living room TV and also do not want to be sitting at our desk playing video games. ITS JUST NOT WHAT THE MASSES WANT OR CARE FOR.

So get over it!!!!! PC may have better graphics but people just don't care that much!! Graphics and resolution have actually caused a lot of harm to game this generation. Instead of focusing on fun gameplay and mechanics all they focus on is resolution and the games end up sucking.
