New PS4 Delivers "Ultra-High Definition Resolution Graphics," Report Says

Yet another report claims Sony is working on a more powerful PlayStation 4.

Though Sony has yet to make an official announcement, the evidence for a more powerful PlayStation 4 console continues to mount. The Wall Street Journal today backed up what reports from Kotaku and Eurogamer said earlier: Sony is working on a new version of the PS4 that can handle "higher-end gaming experiences." This includes virtual reality, the site said, citing sources.

This new system, which will reportedly boast "enhanced graphics and power," will live alongside the existing PS4, with games working for both platforms, according to the WSJ.

No Caption Provided

"Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power," it said. "Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog."

The WSJ also reports that the new console--which wasn't given a name but is apparently being referred to as the PS4 4K--will be announced before the October launch of PlayStation VR, sources said. The system will be able to power "ultra-high definition resolution graphics."

Sony itself has admitted that PlayStation VR, which is powered by the PS4, may be technically inferior to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, which run on higher-end PCs. The improved PS4 would help close the gap, the WSJ said.

It's also claimed in the WSJ report that Sony's ambition with the new system is "to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual-reality experience."

Analysts quoted in the WSJ's story today said continuing to offer the standard PS4 alongside the more powerful unit will help Sony on its path to giving players--casual and hardcore alike--more options in the PlayStation ecosystem.

A price for the new, more powerful PS4 was not mentioned in this report.

Sony may not be alone in releasing new gaming hardware. Recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased that, "You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Traditionally, console gamers have to wait many years for new hardware. For example, the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, with the PS4 coming in 2013. The Xbox 360 launched in 2005, while the Xbox One came out in 2013.

Sony declined to comment.

If this report is accurate, including the pre-October announcement, one possibly venue for the reveal could be E3 in June. Keep checking back with GameSpot for more on Sony's hardware plans.

@ltjohnnyrico: with respect, Sony didn't listen to anyone, and why do you think hey it's ok I'll spend another £.400 + and £350 for VR if I want it . VR is new trendy tech and as usual SONY are milking it. with people thinking the way you do I'm not surprised, I know that sounds personal and mayb it is this is why it's not going to change, will people buy a better PC ? and the VR with it if they are gna spend that amount AFTER already forking out for a ps4?. Don't you find it coincidental that the VR gets released first then they hit u with the new ps4 ?? they should have made it more powerful to begin with 4 k was already around and I'm sure they were developing VR already.

@ltjohnnyrico: oh right cool, is it a htc VR unit? Its so good how the children of today have this new era of tech to look forward too, like i did when it all started on the Atari and various systems that developed after.

Yeah sorry dont misunderstand me i wasn't attacking you personally, it'll be interesting to see how much the more powerful model is.

I used to have a pc for gaming and it got costly when i need ed to completely build a new one, i had consoles all my life (and still have them all) and maybe NTenseify is right in what he says, exclusives are far and few between if thats why people buy consoles, for this gen anyway. In my opinion if Sony are gonna start doing this im returning to PC and gaining better power and oculus for VR. If people are happy to trade up, so be it.

:)

@itchyflop: No Apology necessary I think your comment makes sense and I get what you are saying !! The Vive is the HTC unit, I am also getting OR as well as Im a bit of a geek when it comes to new tech !! My other half has her shoes and bags, I have my tech !!

I think MS and Sony are both going to release beefier systems soon (as has been reported) and I think it is partly due to Gamers wanting more power ... I am happy to trade up and most certainly will .. but I do remember the good old days of Atari back in the day !!

@ltjohnnyrico: yeah i know what you mean when it comes to shoes and bags, its baby clothes with mine at the moment and this will slow my gaming habits down later :( !!!!

I dont understand how Sony and Microsoft got it so wrong? we have gained 60 frames at 1080 on the ps4 on some games, the xbox is way under par.

One of my friends used to work for code-masters (leamington spa UK) before he got made redundant this year, i know how early they have the prototype machines and what they know is being developed for them.

My point, there must be "gamers" within the industry that develop these gaming systems, who makes the decision to go with the chip set knowing the market like they do?

im happy to pay for a new new gen machine every 4 years or so at £400 i think its not bad at all, every couple of years im not sure, i like my tech too, i sorta see what your saying there.

It says in the article that the new system is targeting richer consumers who are willing to pay more for better gaming experience. I bought my PS4 in February 2014 and Xbox One in October 2015. I regretted buying the Xbox but I've loved my PS4 ever since. I have no problem buying another PS4 with 4K capability.

@sodapoppimpski: I have both consoles and I have found my self playing far more Xbox 1 than the PS4. In my opinion there are far more qualities games in my Xbox 1 than PS4. I will not be getting a slightly more powerful PS4 that will still gonna have problem running 1080P games and even more problems running 4K games.

If true, this is quite a strange move by Sony, unless the only difference is the 4K resolution. But if it gives a better PSVR experience than a regular PS4 then I will feel a little cheated by Sony. I might as well cancel my PSVR and get a HTC Vive and upgrade my PC.

I don't know, sounds like a bad move.

First because this will be very frustrasting for people who already own a PS4, and if there were to be an trade in program i doubt it they would invest money in a new console for people to simply swap in, they wanna sell it naturally.

So while most owners would be frustrasted maybe it would appeal to a much small margin, but hey launching it because of VR, that's really risky. I don't see VR becoming a mass product in the near future, i don't think any costumer does. Don't know sound kinda bollocks, there are lot of rumors around sure but still sounds weird.

Edit: The idea of a PS4 that runs games in 4k is plain ridiculous, they would need an entire new hardware way, way more powerful and expensive.

As much as I doubt this is gonna happen, since Sony can't be that stupid...the best thing for them to do would be to completely scrap this, or let us trade in our ps4 for the ps4.5 at no extra cost.

I would be surprised if they release a more powerful PS4. I understand the whole VR thing but that is a niche product at this point. Its to expensive for main stream adoption.

Ugh. These articles about this PS4.5 are an absolute nightmare. Wild speculation combined with idiot kids and consumers make for a quick headache. I really wish game sites would stop this type of rumor-speculation mongering--but they're games news people: their job is only as good as their game overlords allow them to be. This type of news, drip-fed by developers to these sites, create an atmosphere of mania and confusion and anger. No way around it.

Bluntly, this is the dumbest article in months. Why? Because it is leading people to believe it is fact, when it is not. And if it is true, it is one of the dumbest strategies Sony has ever produced. CONSOLES ARE NOT PCS. They're machines for developers to use as stable and reliable vehicles for their games to be published on, without fear or doubt that the specs won't deliver. By implementing upgradable consoles is basically giving the finger to tens of millions of people who don't like microtransactions, or updating hardware, or constantly be given a new set of bills for their entertainment expenses. That's for the PC people, who enjoy tinkering, modding, and oh yeah, spending hundreds to thousands of dollars for pixelized entertainment. Consoles have always been plug and play, and developers capitalize on this fact, knowing that every single person that buys and plays their game will have the same experience. Period. It is why Oculus and Vive have such a hard job with their VR kits: millions of people will have unstable experiences at the simple fact that all Rifts and Vives are created equal, for an incredibly unequal platform--the PC.

If Sony decides to follow through with this terrible idea, it will set a slippery slope precedent in that it trends and becomes the new normal. Which essentially is the proverbial waving of the white flag of surrender and defeat to the PC market. So what are tens of millions of people supposed to do with their young-but-now-obsolete machines? eBay or craigslist? Yeah that's not a freaking headache and a half to get only 20% (if that) of their money back. Basically it completely shits on the people who made the machine what it is today. Nobody will be happy, and Sony will have effectively ruined all their hard-earned good graces with their consumers.

PSVR not capable on PS4? Then don't fucking make it for PS4, make it for PS5. Simple. But yet they are. So it must work, right? Right, it does work on PS4. So incorporating a .5 version doesn't make sense strategically or otherwise for that matter.

And since I'm talking to 8 year olds, I'll give you a quick lesson in 4K. 4K DOES NOT MATTER. I will repeat. 4K DOES NOT MATTER!!! Why? Your eyes. They're great and all but they're stupid, literally. Eyes cannot differentiate past 1080p after 3 feet of distance. The further you are from your TV, the less it matters. Don't believe me? Try it at home: Stand 1 foot from your 1080p TV--see the pixels? Sure you do. Now walk away about 6 feet from your TV. See any pixels? No I didn't think so. The same rule applies to 4K. Stand close, and you will STILL see individual pixels. Sit on your couch about 5-10 feet away and you see nothing. Unless you're a weirdo freak that stares at big screen TVs 6 inches away. Other than that, it is all the same. ADD TO THE FACT that there is virtually ZERO television/cable companies outputting 4K content. Add in there's no 4K games, and you've all but got the same damn machine. People just see a bigger pair of tits and immediately want to throw the double D's out to the curb. People don't think there are limits to our anatomical makeup, but there is. That's why 4K TVs are still so rare--it simply doesn't matter.

Sony, I swear to god if you do this I'm done with you. And I will become a staunch PC advocate because what is the other alternative when dedicated consoles go the way of the incessantly demanding upgrader?

VR and 4K my A$$ .. thats total BS. we will have to buy a console every 2 years from now on to get the full EXPERIENCE!! this is definitely the last console i will ever buy. i will get back being a PC gamers . and NO you don't have to buy 3000$ PC to play games on it. i have been gaming for the past 24 years on a mid range laptop and never complained. buying a ps4 was a big mistake.

@rayo_theking: Why was it a big mistake? You can still play the same games on the PS4, and they'll still look and run great. They just won't look AS good as the new model, which is exactly like PC gaming only that's far more expensive when you have to upgrade.

So you now have to buy a Playstation every three years to be able to play the newest games on the best settings? Gaming 2016 is a goddamn joke. Why waste money on Playstation "upgrades" when you can further customize your experience and play online for free on PCs?

The more likely it becomes that the rumors are true, the more I'm feeling that when the PS4.5 comes out I'll impulse buy it. Between PS4.5, PSVR and the mountain of games coming out for both, damn, that's a lot of gaming on the horizon.

Shut up and take my money. That's exactly what I wanted console developers to do. Why would I play a game on a console when its extremely inferior to my PC? This thing closes to gap and We'll hopefully see. 4K(less likely) or 60FPS in all games with better graphics (more likely)

This is really going to be a turning point for consoles - and before people say this won't be a regular thing, just remember that the X Box was 4 years old when the 360 came out. How many people remember the outrage when that happened...

@Salt_AU: 1) PC tech isn't that quickly outdated. The top GPU/CPU/Whatever will typically remain tops for around a year. But it doesn't become outdated once it's no longer the best thing on the market. I bought a GTX 690 three years ago and it can still run every game on the market--usually at ultra settings.

2) A large part of the appeal of consoles is that they're plug and play: you make one purchase every 4-6 years and it can play every game released for it no problem. No checking specs, no fiddling with software, no worries about which settings your system can run, no problems for your system that aren't had by millions of people with the same system. But consoles seem to be moving towards the PC-model where multiple systems can play the same games at different settings. As someone who moved from console to PC 3 years ago, that's the thing I miss most.

If MS and Sony stop at PS4K and Xbox 1.5 they won't give away what is, IMO, there biggest advantage over PC. But will they stop there? I suspect that Xbox and PS will eventually start pushing out multiple mid-gen upgrades, either this gen or next. And when that happens, it's only a matter of time before someone says, "you know what's better than the PS5.75? Upgrading your PS5.5 without trading it in! Just buy the New GPsU open your PS5.5 and replace the factory GPU. More power. Same case." And at that point, consoles will just be crappy PCs.

Everyone is misunderstanding what all that means. Ok to clarify to people on here cause Gamespot is the worst when it comes to information. Especially if Eddie is involved. The PS4.4 (name can be changed by release) will have a beefier AMD GPU/CPU integrated build. They will also unlock an extra core and let the developers use it.

As far as 4k is concerned. No the PS4.5 will not play games at 4k native. They admit it takes incredible hardware to get games to play at 4k at even 30 fps. What it will do and for this reason alone I will be buying it is that it would upscale the original source to 4k . It will do what most 4K tvs do. It will take the 720p or 1080p signal and boost it to try and look 4k as much as it can . If you have a 4k tv it will look good but you could see some slight issues on true quality, Now if you have a 1080 tv like I do you will benefit cause it will be made to be sharper ( Better AA then AA itself) so I will be able to play the exclusives I got the PS4 for at a higher quality then before. It wont cost $1,000 or more cause the hardware needed to upscale does not cost to much. Rough estimate cost is expected to be $300-$400. There more then likely will be a trade in option so overall cost hopefully $250 or so.

It will however play 4K videos and blue rays at 4K resolution. But again you only benefit if you have a 4K tv. It will still look sharp as hell on a 1080tv though :)

@ecter1216: It doesn't require a supercomputer stuffed with Teslas to play 4K video. Video is extremely easy to decode, I have ten year old hardware that wouldn't get warm decoding 4K video. The PS4 itself should have absolutely no issue playing 4K video. If the only things this will do is play 4K video and scale a video game slightly better than a regular PS4, people are getting fleeced. Which does kind of make sense, if you're Sony and you think you can get away with it.

@ecter1216: Well it depends on the quality of the upscaler in the 4k tv someone purchases. If someone buys a bottom of the line 4k tv, then maybe the 4k upscaler in the new ps4 will make an improvement. But if you have a nice one that reviewed well, well I'm not sure it would make any difference. But it sounds like you are saying it will upscale 1080p games to 4k and then the 1080p tv will scale it back down to 1080. Is that what you are implying, I could be misunderstanding you? But that is not how it would be, I have never heard of that happening in any display hardware. The only time this makes a sharper image on a lower resolution native screen, is when the source content is natively higher resolution. If you have a standard definition crt or lcd display and run a native content 1080 resolution signal to it, then you will benefit with a sharper looking more detailed image. So what you said is true, however it only applies too video playback (streaming), not native 1080p video games. If the game is made around 1080p, then the dev. would work with that resolution to render detail around the level that 1080p can produce. Your not going to get extra detail when its not there in the first place, nor do I think the image would look sharper.

I have not bought a ps4 or X1 one yet, glad I waited now that its almost like a new launch with new ps4, X1, and NX. I recently have been playing Xenoblade Chronicles X which is a 720p game. I have been playing through Twilight Princess HD more recently (going back and forth between the two). TP:HD is a 1080p game and it looks WAY crisper/smoother than 720p Xenoblade, night and day difference. I need to note that I play my Wii U on an Asus 1080p pc monitor and not my main set, which is a Samsung PN50A650 (1080p plasma display). The scaler in the Asus monitor probably is not as good as my Samsung, so that could be making the difference in XCX vs TP:HD bigger. So I dont think Sony or Microsoft would think upscaling 1080p games too 4k for 1080p displays makes any sense. Upscaling too 4k for 4k displays is what they will do, if they think the new 4k sets will need help with it. But I think many of the respectable brand 4k tv's have great scalers.

It might add a higher graphical setting to games that you put into the new ps4, I could see that but like you said no 4k gaming though. Unless its some low detail game like journey, then that could pull off 4k maybe.

I'm just looking at it like a 4k media enhanced ps4 as of right now. Maybe Sony will push 4k content with their Vue service. Sony is making the ps4 into quite the multimedia device that could be your main media hub in the living room. Taking a slower much better approach than Microsoft did with the X1.

@juboner: You are correct. I forgot that in the PC I am sending a higher resolution to the TV. It will still be nice to play with the beefier specs though :)
