New Soundgarden album bundled with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock

Chris Cornell and the Soundgarden crew disbanded in 1997, but they are finally back together and performing live. The band is preparing to release its first album in more than a decade in Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

The Seattle band, heralded as grunge pioneers, will release Telephantasm: A Retrospective in CD form with the first million North American copies of Warriors of Rock a week ahead of the disc's official arrival on October 5. According to Activision, this feat will mark the first time a new music album will be simultaneously released and bundled with a video game. Additionally, the entire album will be available to download day-and-date with the game in the Guitar Hero music store.

All but one of Telephantasm's 12 tracks were featured on previous Soundgarden releases and include hits like "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman." However, the band's unreleased new cut, "Black Rain," will make its debut in Warriors of Rock as one of the game's more than 90 on-disc tracks.

That song was recorded in 1991 during the band's Badmotorfinger's recording sessions. Lead singer Chris Cornell told USA Today it's "sort of the version of Soundgarden that was just thunderous, murderous guitar riffs and pretty dark lyrical content and high screaming vocals."

Activision is no stranger to offering bonus goodies for its music games. Last year, the publisher packaged a two-CD compilation of hits from Jay-Z and Eminem with DJ Hero last year and gave away copies of Guitar Hero: Van Halen with specially marked versions of Guitar Hero 5.
