New Spawn Movie Is One Step Closer, Creator Reveals

Comic book legend Todd McFarlane has been talking about a new movie based on his character Spawn for some time, and has now provided an update on the project. The creator of the demonic antihero posted a new video in which he explains that the script is done and he has now looking for producers. Watch it below:

In the video, McFarlane states that while he hasn't spoken to anyone within the film industry yet, a number of people have approached him about making the movie. He states that he hopes to make a further announcement at the San Diego Comic Con in July, and confirms that, if it happens, the new Spawn film would be "an R-rated horror movie."

Nevertheless, McFarlane is realistic about the fact that a completed script is only the first stage of getting a film produced. "It does not mean the movie is being made," he said. "It means that there is a script there that everybody can look at."

In February last year, McFarlane told Comicbook.com that part of his decision to stay away from the big-budget approach of many modern superhero movies was so he could make the film himself. "Basically, I can make this version of the movie on a budget without crazy special effects," he said. "I want to keep it small, keep it tight, so they'll let me direct it!"

The comic book Spawn appeared in 1992 and was one of the first titles published by McFarlane's Image Comics. It was massively popular, with the first issue selling 1.7 million copies. However, the 1997 film adaptation was not a big hit with either audiences or critics.

Numerous video games featuring the character have been released over the years, including Spawn: The Video Game, Spawn: Armageddon, and Spawn: The Eternal.
