New Star Trek Movie Confirmed For 2023 But We Don't Know What It Is

The next Star Trek film is going boldly into 2023.

Paramount has announced it will release a new Star Trek movie in 2023. What is the movie? We don't know and Paramount hasn't said yet, but the film studio apparently feels confident enough about it to put the untitled and unannounced film on its release calendar.

This movie, whatever it turns out to be, will be released on June 9, 2023.

JJ Abrams rebooted the Star Trek film series in 2009 in a well-received, commercially successful film that starred Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Sequels Into Darkness and Beyond released in 2013 and 2016.

A fourth installment in the reboot series was planned, but Paramount pulled the plug on it in 2019. Actor Simon Pegg, who played Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the reboots, said the Star Trek films simply did not make enough money.

"The fact is, Star Trek movies don't make Marvel money," he said in 2020. "They make maybe $500 million at the most, and to make one now, on the scale they've set themselves, is $200 million [for its budget]. You have to make three times that to make a profit."

Into Darkness was the most commercially successful of the three reboot films, and it made $467 million worldwide.

Pegg also remarked that the 2016 death of Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov, was a "huge blow to our little family, and [the] enthusiasm to do another one might have been affected by that."

Another Star Trek movie from Fargo's Noah Hawley was said to be in the works, but it's been sidelined for now. A report said Hawley's movie would tell a story about a virus that wipes out a huge part of the universe, and Paramount may not want to pursue this story in the current climate.

Quentin Tarantino is said to be involved in a future Star Trek movie, but again, it remains to seen if that's still the plan given the overall upheaval around the sci-fi series.

In other Star Trek news, new seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks are in the works--check out new trailers here.

@EvilTyger: Yes! The Terrans really have been receiving some love recently with Discovery, but an entire movie focused around them (Especially Picard) fighting the Borg would be fantastic.

Only problem I see is Patrick Stewart is too old to revisit the role of a younger Picard. They would have the go the route of the Picard show or get another actor (Which would be a tough thing to do). It'd probably be best to go with a new character or a character less iconic than those like Picard or Riker but are still big figures within the Terran Empire (Or Starfleet).

Edit: This of course depends on if the Empire hasn't been defeated yet however.

while I thought the newer movies were ok, they changed the fundamental formula for star trek.

While the updated action was cool, the story telling just wasnt there. maybe growing up watching tng, and ds9 put me in a certain mindset for the series. but I preferred the more stage acting that was presented in those series.

Though it was nice to see a kligon fight in the newer stuff. I was watching ds9 recently, and for a warrior (poet ;P) race the sure lost a lot of fights.

Ohhh - time to speculate! I'd be fine with just another sequel to the Chris Pine movies. I'm guessing they'll just do something completely new though - which would be cool. If I could pick, I'd go for a brand new story set in the original universe (prime universe, is that what we call it?) and have it be in the future a bit. Maybe 50 years after Picard show currently on Paramount+. Otherwise, I would totally be down for a Star Trek: Discovery movie in 3 to 5 years(continue the old trend of shows getting movies at the end of their TV run). :)

@deth420: Oh man, you have to revisit Discovery! S1, super weak, yes.

S2 is SO much better (Christopher Pike and Spock) with a very surprising end! And then S3 is just wonderful. No spoilers! :)

Remember the difference in quality between TNG S1 and S3. Same here. It's definitely found it's footing by S3 and is doing it's own thing.

You are completely right. That is pretty much the only way to really describe it.

Season 3 had me feeling like I was actually watching Star Trek again.

@deth420: Also check out "Star Trek: Lower Decks" animated show on Paramount+. Hilarious. Lots of diehard TNG humor. Set right after nemesis movie, roughly.
