New Star Trek Shows On The Way As Discovery Boss Signs New Deal

The world of Star Trek is going to be expanding in a big way with Alex Kurtzman's new deal with CBS. With his initial contract coming to an end, Alex Kurtzman has signed a five-year deal with CBS Television Studios, in order to potentially release several new Star Trek shows.

THR reports that after the initial showrunners of Star Trek: Discovery, Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg, were fired due to budget issues and some complaints of reported staff mistreatment, Kurtzman was called to the captain's chair on this, and the new Star Trek projects. Along with executive producing Star Trek: Discovery, Kurtzman has credits on J.J. Abrams' film adaptations of the series, so he has had some pretty significant experience with the Star Trek universe. Kurtzman will now reportedly be continuing work on the next season of Star Trek: Discovery as well as bringing several new Star Trek projects to the small screen.

So far, the team has been pretty tight-lipped about the new shows. Most of the information we have is from Kurtzman himself who said simply, "CBS has also allowed us the great pleasure of reintroducing the world of Star Trek audiences new and old, and we are very excited to keep working alongside them to expand that world."

CBS has declined to give any more details as to what the shows might entail, but one element that fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation will be thrilled about is the possible casting of Patrick Stewart in one of the projects. It is rumored that Stewart will be reprising his role as Captain Picard in one of the shows, but no deals have been signed.

Given Kurtzman's experience with the Star Trek world as well as the success of Star Trek: Discovery, we are very excited to see where these new projects will take us in the ever-expanding Star Trek Universe.
