New Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Game Reportedly Being Made Without BioWare

The previous game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, and BioWare created the original before it was acquired by EA.

BioWare's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is widely considered to be among the best Star Wars games ever made, as well as one of the best licensed role-playing games. Since the second game released in 2004, we've been in the dark on any follow-ups, but a new game is reportedly coming from a completely different company.

That's according to VGC as well as Star Wars insider Bespin Bulletin and Nate Najda--better known online as Shinobi602--the new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game isn't being made by Electronic Arts or BioWare. Those sources didn't say who would be developing the new game, though Najda seemed to indicate it wasn't going to be a well-known studio.

Now Playing: Star Wars Squadrons Video Review

Electronic Arts had been publishing console and PC Star Wars games exclusively for the last several years, beginning with Star Wars: Battlefront in 2015 and eventually leading to games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars: Squadrons. The company seemed to be finally hitting its stride with the franchise, though it had also canceled several Star Wars games. However, with Ubisoft's Massive studio now creating an open-world Star Wars game, it appears nearly anyone could be in charge of this apparent new Knights of the Old Republic.

Knights of the Old Republic began as an Xbox exclusive, as BioWare hadn't been acquired by EA yet. Its sequel was handled by Obsidian Entertainment, a company that has since been purchased by Microsoft. However, its plate is currently quite full, with work on games like Grounded and Avowed meaning it almost certainly isn't working on Star Wars. Still, the possibilities for a developer are pretty much endless. Given the pedigree of its predecessors, expectations for a third game would certainly be sky-high.

I want a new game, but I would love a remaster. I never got to play the original when it was released and it's hard for me to get into it due to the graphics now.

So it means it's gonna be a turd. Maybe similar to ME Andromeda. I wonder how EA suddenly came to the conclusion that it would be a good idea to put inexperienced developer teams to work on their biggest brands.

@worlds_apart: I don't actually see that being mentionnd anywhere. All the article says is that it could be published by anyone. But who published the first 2 games? Isn't that already a brand that belongs to the company who did? Or does it also belong to Disney now and they're free to let anyone develop any sequels they want? Could Ubisoft just get the rights to develop the next Battlefront game without EA having a say in it?

@Atzenkiller: right now this game is only a romour, nothing is confirmed but in the 2nd paragraph it clearly states EA/Bioware have nothing to do with the game. EA also had nothing to do with the first 2 games. They were published by LucusArt. Didn't Disney buy them? I'll have to check

@worlds_apart: I'm really not interested in arguing about this but the article says that "some insider says it's definitely not EA". That is still a rumor, nothing more as "Insiders" are rumor peddlers.

Now other companies has the chance to make a game using the SW licence.

We have competition finally and this can only mean good.

WHO MAKES THE BEST STAR WARS GAME?🤷‍♀️

Right now (like it or not) EA with Respawn did a pretty good job with the Fallen Order...will be pretty tough to beat them.

Unless ones try to make a Star Wars in another genre...why not a full blown rpg like (japanese style)Dragon Quest(yeah, wishfull thinking that one) or keep the Kotor formula(with modern gamedesign and mechanics) or something made from Larian?

Would Star Wars fit in a genre similar to Diablo,Torchlight,Path of Exile?

A podracing game done by experienced devs(Turn 10,Playground).

Or Volleyball...yes,Star Wars Extreme Volleyball...eww...now that sounds silly lol...or not...in Japan at least 😉😂

I would like to see Larian doing it. But I guess they are too busy with Baldur's Gate 3, and maybe a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin 2.

What would be nice is for the wonderful people who made the original KOTOR to get back together (as many as possible) and make KOTOR 3. Obviously I'm not talking about the current Bioware, but the Bioware from 20 years ago. I've played KOTOR so many times, I can't count. It's rare that a game is that good. I hope they can create that kind of similar magic like in the original.

I read that it was supposed to be a remake of the original, not a new game, Could be wrong? Either way, Bioware doesn't deserve to be a part of it considering how awful they've been as of late.

Theyd be stupid NOT to make a new KOTOR. Every Star Wars game fan I know, absolutely would pay for a 3rd installment. The sequel was sadly a little unfinished, so it'd be awesome to get a full fledged modern star wars RPG.

I've been bitching all over the internet for a KOTOR 3 game for years. And in their current Anthem state, I don't want Bioware to even write a line of code in it. But giving one of the best licenced franchises to an unknown studio doesn't sound hopeful. Is this another case of watch what you wish for?

I can't help but feel that this will just be a cash grab with myriad microtransactions attached pulling on the appeal of two great games from yesteryear. As much as I want this to be a talking point for the next decade I'm not holding my breath just yet.

@gotrekfabian: . it's been a while since i last saw you in gamespot comment section. I agree with you, it depends on who will be in charge of this project. It would be really good if they let the original developers of the game to end this trilogy in the way it was originally planned.

@habeasdata: I'm still fairly active although not like I used to be. There are too many trolls on the site and there's also a mod out there who was deleting my comments for seemingly no reason. I've yet to work out who they are but some of the more recent trolls used to be fanboys for one console or the other so my eye is on them.

Hopefully Bioware can relinquish the original plot for whomever is taking over the project although it has been said that former Bioware employees have now formed their own studio (called Archetype Entertainment and is a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast). Put these two pieces of info together and magic could happen. 🤞

Please don't **** this up.

Also, I wonder if this is the Star Wars game Ubisoft is working on.

I hope not, because allegedly that Ubisoft game is supposed to be open world and that would not lend itself well to the epic storytelling the KOTOR series is known for.

So not even a publisher? Yeah, I'll keep my enthusiasm to a minimum. There's a huge probability that this isn't real, and another that it'll be a huge, flaming dumpster fire.

Good bet that when the developer is announced it would be a new studio started by a bunch of ex-realBioware people.

The only way this has a chance is if EA, Bioware, and Ubisoft are NOT involved.

It's going to be difficult enough just because Disney is involved.

Poor Star Wars fans.

At this point, I'm not sure anyone could capture that lightning in a bottle again. Similar to Baldur's Gate 3, I'm sure it can be a great game whenever it comes out, but it's not going to reach the greatness of the previous games.

@lionheartssj1: Given the fact a lot of what made those games great was how it pioneered the RPG genre it makes sense, they would need to make something new, which, is not exactly necessary, as great as BG was specially the sequel, they were surpassed by many games in terms of story and gameplay. They hold a lot of merit, but it's more due to nostalgia and its place in history as a genre defining experience. So, as long as it has a quality story and good gameplay I'll be content.

I'd have thought Disney would want any new Star Wars games to time into the "High Republic" era of Star Wars they're currently pushing.
