New Tony Hawk game might be made for "newer consoles"

If such a game happens, Hawk would prefer to use the classic control scheme, and not the one seen in Skate.

There is a "chance" that a new game in the Tony Hawk series will make its way to "newer consoles," according to the pro skateboarder himself.

Hawk participated in a Reddit AMA today, and a number of questions that came up were related to his hit video game series. Most notably, when asked about the prospect of a new game, he said, "There is a CHANCE of something in the future for newer consoles." Presumably by this he means consoles like the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U, as Tony Hawk games do already exist on the previous generation of consoles.

Earlier this year, Hawk indicated a new game was in the works, prompting longtime series publisher Activision to confirm that such a game is coming. However, indications were that it was a mobile game, which Hawk mentioned today. "In the meanwhile, we are releasing TH Shred Sessions for mobile devices (iOS, Android, tablets) soon-ish," Hawk wrote, referring to the endless runner we've already gotten a look at. "I'm going rogue with information at this point so I better shut up now."

In a later post, when asked if the control scheme used in Skate might be implemented in a future game, Hawk said, "If we make a new console game, I would prefer to keep the original control scheme. That's what makes our series THPS, and not a copy of something else."

The last original Tony Hawk game developed for consoles was Tony Hawk: Shred in 2010, a poorly received spin-off that came bundled with a skateboard peripheral. Prior to that, the last Tony Hawk game released for consoles that didn't rely on a peripheral was Tony Hawk's Proving Ground in 2007--the final game released during a nine-year run that saw at least one Tony Hawk game launched every year.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, a downloadable, HD re-release of content from the first two Pro Skater games, was released in 2012. At the time, developer Robomodo's CEO, Josh Tsui, suggested something bigger could eventually be made, saying, "The prospect of a fuller game is definitely on the table -- it's just a matter of when and how."

Hawk answered some other questions related to games on Reddit today, including whether he's a fan of the Skate series. "I honestly rarely played them," he said. "I appreciated that skateboarding had come so far as a videogame genre that there was viable competition in the field though. And any game that had a Pixies song in the soundtrack is okay with me."

The soundtracks were among the most beloved aspects of the early Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games, prompting one Reddit user to ask Hawk about his role in selecting music. "I gave many suggestions because I wanted the games to represent the diversity and uniqueness of skate culture," Hawk explained. "And once Activision acquired Guitar Hero, the music licensing team got approvals much faster."

He also revealed his favorite Tony Hawk game. "[M]y favorite is THPS2 because it put skateboarding on the map as a videogame genre and many people have said it is the reason they started skating at all," he said.

One especially interesting question involved a choice few people ever have to consider when playing a game--did he choose to play as himself? "I always finish my games with my 'pre-made' character so that I know all of 'my' special moves and I'm ready for any random challengers," he said. "So I play with myself, so to speak."

Skate's control scheme was brilliant and incredibly intuitive. Coming from such a high level skateboarder, you'd think he'd want a control scheme that better recreated the feeling of skateboarding and less about "classic" video game.

That said, Tony Hawk games have never focused on realism nor recreating a real sense of skateboarding. It's all about the moon physics and making skateboarding into something surrealistic and "gamey". I'd rather wait for the next Skate than give Tony Hawk/Activision my money.

The image heading this article showcases just what people's expectations are for a Tony Hawk game... the ability to fly on a wooden board with wheels.

I just want a Tony Hawk game in the vein of it's rather fun Underground series, while the stories sucked the skating was the best it had ever been and there were many places to go and things to do, plus the ability to get off your skateboard was awesome.

I haven't played a Tony Hawk game since American Wasteland and was disappointed in that game entirely, not at the skating it's self but the story, it was lame and boring and completely forgettable.

I want a massive open world in which to shred in, a story that doesn't involve a cookie cutter character you make that tries to work his way up from a nobody up to pro skater in some major tournament.

Maybe something that involves taking down a corrupt mayor of a (insert city name here) that wants to ban skating everywhere or something to that effect.

As of the moment I'm playing old school TH games starting with THPS 2, which is to me the best game in the series.

A new THUG would be pretty cool IMO. THUG 2 was probably my favorite skateboarding game. I couldn't really get into skate like I did with Tony Hawk games.

Was it THUG 2 where every city Bam Margera would show up and give you an objective and his voiceover was LITERALLY recorded over a telephone?

I'd much prefer a new "Skate" game. I had so much fun playing the Skate series & I very much preferred the control-scheme as well. It had loads of replayability value and I spent tons of time on multiplayer's "Mega Skate Park" in Skate 2 especially. If they do bring out a Skate 4 then it would be awesome. As for a Tony Hawk's game, sorry, got no interest in button-mashing.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's one thing that's so great about video games. Even if you don't have any interest in something in real life you can fully enjoy it in a game. Violence aside of course.

I would like to see a new "open world" TH game, but have it so that its truly open world, instead of going through tunnels to get to the other maps.

Tony Hawk should do what's best and let his contract with Activision expire and go with some other company. 2K seems like a good choice under their 2K Sports brand. F*ck Activision.

I'd like to see a reboot of the Pro Skater series cause those games were fun. I liked them more than the skate series by EA

I'd like the series to return but it kinda depends on who makes it....if it's Robomodo forget it, they're directly responsible for killing the franchise in the first place....

on the other hand if Neversoft was given the franchise again....at least there'd be some hope for it.....

I don;t want some rehash of the previous series or collected levels hoping to kick up nostalgia, I'd rather see something with some thought like rethink the franchise....but whatever they do the first entry needs to have Character and park editors...

It's going to be extremely difficult playing another skateboarding game that isn't Skate. I practically grew up playing all the THPS titles. Now that I have Skate, nothing else seems to matter.

All I want is a proper Skate sequel. One with a huge open world where you could be playing alone and your friends could join, and with servers for like 16 or more players.

<< LINK REMOVED >> for the multiplayer part, yes. Skate 3 already did it, but with 8 players in small sections of the map. I think they'd do it bigger if it weren't for hardware limitations (like Battlefield on last-gen)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well games like Battlefield 4 have made it (sort of) work with 64-person multiplayer, so making a similar size for a new "Skate" game should be fine. I think it would work.

I appreciate the realistic style of Skate, but sometimes I just want the ridiculous arcade action that made Tony Hawk popular to begin with. Sometimes, I just want to sit back and rack up millions of points grinding on skyscrapers and helicopters in great 10 minute sessions, or stay up too late scouring for secrets while perfecting my combos. I'd love a new Tony Hawk game, I think it's been long enough that the fatigue has worn off, for me anyway.
