New Witcher Game In Development, Will Use Unreal Engine 5

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that a new Witcher saga is coming.

CD Projekt Red has announced that a new game in The Witcher series is in development. Unlike previous games, development will move from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5 as part of a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. CDPR says that it'll closely collaborate with Epic Games' developers to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences.

At this point, further details on The Witcher--such as a development time frame or release date--are currently unavailable. We also don't yet know if the game will be called The Witcher 4 or something else.

One bit of trivia that can be gleaned from the teaser image, which GamesRadar's Leon Hurley spotted, is that it hints at Witcher protagonist Geralt's former protege Ciri being the star of this new game:

While CDPR isn't ready to share any details on the next Witcher game just yet, the company's chief technology officer Paweł Zawodny did briefly touch on the company shifting to Unreal Engine 5. "It is vital for CD Projekt Red to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase--as in the past--we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release," Zawodny said in a press statement. "This cooperation is so exciting, because it will elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools."

According to Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, the collaboration with CDPR will "push the limits of interactive storytelling and gameplay together" while also benefitting the developer community for years to come. CDPR did note that The Witcher won't be an Epic Games Store exclusive, indicating that it'll be available on other PC storefronts as well when it eventually launches.

The last Witcher game released was The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt in 2015, which earned universal acclaim from both critics and fans. Selling over 28 million copies as of April 2020, the game also had two well-received expansions arrive after launch, with PC sales accounting for over half of the units bought. Since then the franchise has also become a popular series on Netflix that stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, although it has nothing to do with the games and is based on the original novels.

A new standalone version of The Witcher card game Gwent is also reportedly in development and might be released later this year. CDPR's last game was Cyberpunk 2077, which launched in a buggy state back in 2020. Since then, the studio has drastically overhauled the sci-fi game, upgrading it for current-gen Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles with ray tracing, 4K with dynamic scaling, faster loading times, and a host of other technical improvements.

Elden Ring (Soulsborne) games have the perfect combat engine. Get these entwinned with the Witcher game along with finding use for generic (non-witcher) weapons and already off to a winner :)

@thecupidstunts: I haven't played the game much, I fell off it a while back but was considering doing a proper run after the new Netflix season got me hyped, but now I'll definitely wait. Good timing for me having recently got a PS5 as well.

@Destructionzz: Congrats on your PS5! Also, hope you have a few hundred hours for that run, the amount of content is just crazy, (I think I ended up around 300 hours with the expansions).

@thecupidstunts: Thanks! Yeah I heard people got crazy hours on that game. To be honest that's why I stopped like 30 hrs into it. I realized it would take so much time and with these kind of games I just can't seem to step back once I get into them, always need to do more more. Don't get me wrong I love that idea of a big open world and always finding something new, always improving your character. Love that, could spend forever playing. I made it a point to avoid the biggest RPGs like Skyrim, Fallout etc where the amount to do is massive. I felt like I missed out because these were/are the kind of games people talk a lot about. Witcher I eventually jumped on because I got tired of hearing how amazing it was.

I feel like the issue now is more that there's so much to play, especially now I got the PS5 as well, and investing too much time in one game means possibly missing out on some of the other games you want to play. Time is limited so. I definitely do want a proper run of Witcher with the PS5 version, but I'd prefer if there wasn't so much else to play around the time so I could focus on that, fat chance I guess. Right now I got some backlog from the PS4 and PS5 games like Elden/HZD I barely started. Add in new games keep coming and this year might be big due to earlier delays. But it could seem as if delays continue so far which is good for me so I can catch up.

I think I already bit the bullet though. Elden Ring is looking like it's going to be able to make you spend some serious hours. 100s easily, and 1000s if you really want to, is my gauge. You got 300 hrs on Witcher, is that your top played one? For me it's AC Origins with 200+, HZD on second with 150ish. I'm sensing Elden Ring will take that top spot eventually.

@Destructionzz: Well, just because I spent that much time on the game doesn’t mean everyone would. I was enamored with it, so I really took my time and did every single possible thing, so your mileage may definitely vary.

I've also just hit 100 hours on Elden Rings, (and it looks like I've still got a ways to go), so it looks like it's a timesuck game for me as well.

I think the games that I've spent the most time with are Diablo 3, No Man's Sky, and FFXIV.

What's your most played?

@thecupidstunts: AC Origins 200+hrs with expansions, Horizon Zero Dawn with expansion 150ish. These are games were I did every single thing. If you count MMO's that would be WoW by a longshot. 120 days of playtime (converted to hrs around 3K) on my main character alone. I always wanted to try FFXIV, if I went back to MMO's that would be it.

As for Elden Ring I'm spending a long time just learning the ropes, experimenting, exploring, uh... dying. I'm 30 hrs in and I've only met one story boss, or I think it is, like that Margit the fell, fella. I'm a super leisure player though, and I'm obsessive about understanding, checking, every thing.

@Destructionzz: Wow on WoW, now that's a LOT of playtime! 😲

I've stopped playing FFXIV, and won't get near MMO's any more. They're just too much of a commitment.

That medallion is either a rat or fox.

Whomever is seeing a cat, should just look stock photos of TW3 medallions.

I doubt its about ciri since the big ending was her become empress. Would had like to play as young vesemir or lambert.

It looks very much like a lynx cat to me which would fit the lore of the Witcher. When the school of wolf ended the remaining members from the both the magic school of the wolf and school of the cat joined and reformed into the school of the Lynx.

A lot of games seem to be moving towards UR engine 5 including Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate by SQE, with better performance and less development costs the promise. So a lot of new developers, like really big players are moving towards this, which is good and bad. Maybe less variety but at least better performance then RedEngine that gave us Cyberpunk.....

@zaryia: I think the main issue is that the developer never made a game like that and expected to pull it off with flying colors. One could say the ego got to the company and thought they could do anything. It took three entries to make TW3 so assuming they could make a perfect Deus Ex GTA hybrid off the bat was never a safe bet. It was made worse with all the lies and crocodile tears after release, the fanbois didn't help either because they happily ate up all the shit.

Long post short; let's hope they make a game worth playing. I'm personally not holding my breath, but would welcome them to learn, be humble and do what they're already good at instead of trying something wildly different and sucking.

Let's see if they break that promise. A lot of time could pass between now and when this game is released; GoG might nosedive and then Epic Game Store would be their only recourse.

In either case, I do like The Witcher series; none of the games have been perfect, but they've always evolved into better games and if "The Witcher 4" (not sure what title will be) is better than The Witcher 3--a game I really enjoyed--then I will be happy.

@mrbojangles25: Yeah I share the same fear, but a lot of publishers/devs use unreal engine either in parts or fully, limited licensed or fully bought out, and out on many many many platforms including several DDSs. So, where a game may land on a DDservice platform or console is less about the game engine and more about the ... publisher and who owns what. Sony having invested heavily in Epic, getting paid on the backend as well.

@Raistlarn: It's a lot better than when it launched. There's still plenty of clunk, but a lot of that is the same clunk The Witcher 3 had, so it's probably deliberate. It's a cool, ambitious game with room for more improvement. I'd buy it on sale, but if you're interested, I'd still buy it.

BL and CP should not be compared, at all. It's like comparing apples to hand grenades. They're roughly the same size, but one is juicy and delicious, and the other will blow your face off.

@Raistlarn:

I heard with the lastest patch 1.5 -it, cyberpunk, is starting to be a very good game.. The game, was in and of its self a decent-great game, but atrocious because of its performance and bugs.

They say the PS5 version 1.5 runs especially well now, I think I will pick up cyberpunk on a summer sale for less then $20. Yes it sucks balls, that developers put out crap at launch, but those with a long to-do-games-list, benefit from waiting it out.

Maybe a build your own Witcher type of game? With their on story, so the monsters are up to them to create?

The detective/monster missions was the best part of the Witcher, enjoyed every single one.

You know, even knowing the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 only failed because it was a new game in the series, that was way too ambitious. And the fact that CDPR has made 3 witcher games already. And the fact that they've stated they learn from their mistakes from the last game's failures.

It's honestly really hard to get hyped for this one.

It is .... stunning, no wait insane, yes totally insane form of essay on ... well anything. And so fun watching all 4+ hours of it. Not kidding.

ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS Cyberpunk 2077 by Tim Rogers youtube

After the 1 hour introduction, it splits off to the other chapters, don't miss it. It is one of the greatest things ever..... you will be ashamed of watching.

Don't miss his review of Tokimeki Memorial, but I mean,... why would you.

I waited until a few weeks ago for Cyberpunk… still got some bugs but probably around 50+ hrs and been really enjoying it. Sort of glad they learned their lesson so they are less likely / won’t make the same mistake with Witcher 4

Stoked. Witcher 3 was a great game
