New Wonder Woman Game Canceled, Multiple Studios Closed

Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego are closing as part of a major shakeup at Warner Bros. Games.

Warner Bros. Games is making some dramatic changes, as the company is closing Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego. Warner Bros. Games is also cancelling the new Wonder Woman game at Monolith Productions as part of this shakeup.

Warner Bros. Games confirmed this following a breaking news report from Jason Schreier of Bloomberg.

Monolith Productions was founded in 1994 and was more recently known for licensed games like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. The studio also created the F.E.A.R. and Condemned franchises. Warner Bros. acquired the company in 2004.

Player First, meanwhile, is the developer behind the ill-fated multiplayer game MultiVersus, which is closing this May. Warner Bros. acquired Player First in 2024. MultiVersus was the team's first game.

WB San Diego is more recently established studio that was contributing to "the future of AAA free-to-play games."

In a statement, Warner Bros. Games said it made the "very difficult" decision to restructure its development teams, resulting in these studio closures. Going forward, Warner Bros. Games said it will focus on four major franchises: Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones.

The statement said the decision to close the three studios was a "strategic change" that had nothing to do with the teams or the talented individuals working there.

As for the new Wonder Woman game, Warner Bros. said it wanted to make "the highest quality" game, but "unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities." Wonder Woman is, of course, a DC property, but it seemingly is not a fit within the company's new strategy.

"This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith's storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games," the company said.

WBD gaming boss JB Perrette announced these decisions in a memo to staff today obtained by Polygon. He said some staff who were not laid off will be reassigned to other internal roles where possible. He also said Warner Bros. will look to do more in the mobile games space and aims to "regain our credibility and swagger at producing great games." Perrette also reflected on some of the company's recent misses in gaming, saying the "product-market fit and quality of too many of our new releases has really missed the mark."

He added: "We need to and will do better for our fans first and foremost, and also because regaining that credibility is critical to us securing even more investment in games in the years to come."

A recent report said the new Wonder Woman game had already cost Warner Bros. more than $100 million and was nowhere close to being ready for release. This follows a trend at Warner Bros. Games, as recent projects have failed to take off. Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a $200 million flop for the company, Warner Bros. Montreal's Gotham Knights saw lukewarm sales when it launched, and MultiVersus, as mentioned, will shut down in May. Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus were live-service games. Kill the Justice League developer Rocksteady is not historically known for making those types of games.

Warner Bros. Games' longtime boss, David Haddad, announced in January that he's leaving the company but will stay on for the next three months to help oversee the transition to a new leader. No such executive has been named yet for Haddad's replacement.

Looking ahead, Warner Bros. games is focusing on the four core franchises mentioned above. A Hogwarts Legacy sequel is coming, Warner Bros. Montreal is said to be pitching a new Game of Thrones title, and Rocksteady may be plotting a new single-player Batman game. As for DC, studio boss James Gunn recently said some "really interesting" projects are coming in the gaming space, but not soon.

Full Warner Bros. Games statement:

"We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises -– Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones. After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego.

This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them. The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman videogame will not move forward. Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities.

This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games. We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions. As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond."

I don't know how others feel but I definitely don't think Wonder Woman is the most exciting superhero out there, let alone to play that character in a game. I just can't think of Wonder Woman as a "fun to play" game. Maybe a few might have enjoyed it but I just can't imagine them making any money (or break even) from it ever. Such a poor choice for a game adaptation.

And shutting down Monolith as a result of this bad choice is such a shame. Really sad to see them shuttered.

If Monolith kept making Fear games they'd still be around.

It's such a shame.

Also of course if that Suicide squad rubbish never came out it would have helped too.

I enjoyed the Fear games so am sorry to see Monolith go.

Companies need to start listening to people.

Nobody wanted a Wonder Woman game and Nobody wanted a live service suicide squad game or a suicide squad game full stop.

The movies flopped didn't they.

It was rubbish.

No one is making decent single player first person shooters anymore.

There is a market there that is not being tapped into.

I think it's the CEOs making the decisions who now nothing about actual videogames or what makes a game good and are just chasing the easy money are the problem.

They are running these companies into the ground. I'm not interested in Game of Thrones or Hogwart Legacy games. Maybe a new Batman game could be good. It's not really the same Rocksteady anymore though.

@mcnichoj: Yes they definitely did. The first was the best. They would have the technology now to make a good fear game. It's a shame it will never happen.

The fact that Warner itself still exists is the biggest mystery on the planet. They reek of incompetence

Sad to see them close but to be honest can't say im surprised, Shadow of War came out in 2017 and Wonder Woman was still reportedly years away and had a budget that was already over $100 million so the writing was kinda on the wall.

The game industry really does need to sort out this long development cycles that so many games have right now. A 5 year development cycle was considered long just a generation or two ago now 5 years is the norm which just can't continue. how do you build a franchise when it takes atleast 10 years for you to get even a trilogy out and by that point alot of your audience from previous entries have grown up got extra responsiblities now and simply just miss the other entries completely because adult life has hit them.

Thats not to say there aren't adult gamers i know the stats on the age range of gamers its just in terms of time to actually play as you get older that decreases so games start going on the back log or simpy not getting purchased and i tell myself ill get them later down the line (which you end up not doing).

Dev cycles need to get back to that 3 year development cycle as being the norm and 5 year dev cycle being considered long that tend to be more of your "generation defining" games like skyrim on 360/PS3 or Witcher 3 on XB1/PS4.

Sad monolith was a good studio, they half created the FPS blood in the late 90s.

RIP Monolith.

So basically WB was like, “Since I can't have my own big live service game on par with Fortnite, War Zone, Warframe, Overwatch, or The First Descent. Then, screw it. I guess we're not making video games anymore.”

This is quintuple painful for me because I really enjoyed all their single-player games.

>The First Descendant
>big live service
It launched to a peak of a quarter of a million players and now averages less than 10k peak. Game will get an announced shut down in two years probably.

@lord2fli: They make more money writing the whole thing off as a loss and never releasing it, just like with those recent canned completed movies they had for Batgirl and SCOOB 2.

Sad for the loss of jobs, but this is also probably for the best.

DC license in general seems pretty misused of late, while WB is solid.

Gotham Knights, stinker...Hogwort's Legacy, winner.

Suicide Squad, stinker...Mortal Kombat, winner (I think?)

@mrbojangles25: MK is a winner in the sense that the gameplay is good and the base game sold well but it has zero player retention as all casuals just run through the story mode once and then go into practice mode to see the fatalities. The DLC didn't do well enough and the game has zero monetization to support further development.

That sucks. This publisher took such a nosedive after they let go of the Lego license.

I hope the devs can find more work soon.

Why do people act like they do not deserve it? What have Monolith made recently? Nothing.

Been like what 8 years since their last game? I'd shut them down too.

@Slannmage: yeah sure. They launch insanely good LotR games that everyone loves, then are forced to develop a Wonder Woman game next, then are forced to change it midway to a live service game that would NEVER work, then it’s their fault the game cost 100 million and didn’t work as a live service title and they deserve to be shut down and fired

@Slannmage: I like Monolith since like forever (Blood, Shogo, NOLF, the Middle Earth games, etc) but yeah...not really cranking out the titles like they could or should. Not sure if that is the publisher or developer to blame, though.

@mrbojangles25: This is why Publishers used to have strict targets, but something got lost along the way where Publishers started allowed developers to produce nothing for years.

@Slannmage: Don't know why you're so quick to defend the publishers. It's usually them who make decisions that force developers to take more time to develop a game.

@Slannmage: i do agree with you on the publishers part. dev cycles use you be a normal 3 years and a 5 year development was considered long and usually seen on only your much larger games. like you said somewhere along the line publishers started thinking allowing developers 7 or 8 hell even up to 10 years to make a game was finanicially sustainable when the sizes of development teams have increased id argue by 4x or more.

however it is always sad to see devs lose their jobs because at the end of the day the publisher should be the one setting the expectations and sticking to deadlines much more strickly to avoid these massive loses.

@xnshd: Thing is though you know when something isn't right at a company, none of the developers would have thought it was all going fine. So you end up looking for another jobs anyways and it causes brain drain, all the best talent would have left a long time ago. It isn't like it comes out of the blue and all the people working there are victims. I knew my last company was going under years before I left, I just stayed there to milk everything I could out of it, while switching to part time and working on my starting my own business.... Though the month I left I got screwed cause it was March 2020 and I lost everything thanks to the lock downs that no one is being held accountable for.

This rate there won't be anyone left to make games. We'll have nothing but Fortnite and Minecraft updates. The weird stuff my kids watch youtube videos about that they never actually play.

We'll have to get new hobbies. Anyone want to go 50 50 with me on a whiskey still?

@olddadgamer: That's how it goes in America sadly.

We constantly love to show the horrors of monopolies and big business, that we even made a game that gets the message across. But, we still "one trick pony" all of our purchases, and investments. Then again, this is what happens when you group think as hard as we do on top of going, "I only buy/invest-in 'X' product" without giving anything else a try. Slowly making that market field consist of only 5 to 2 players.

I think the only good thing is that Japan doesn't follow this BS, mentally handicapped stock chasing. And instead worries about the longevity of the company, and making epic games.

@girlusocrazy: Oh agreed. Finally played the Stanley Parable when it hit PS+ and wow.

Still, I do like the big, engrossing epics. Worlds to lose yourself in, characters to get to know. I think we all like those on some level. I hope they can make a comeback.

I'm not surprised to hear about the Wonder Woman cancellation. They spent way too much on the hair physics. I am disappointed that they are shuttering so many studios. Live-service games are a slippery slope and if you lose at 2 of them like that maybe you should rethink doing live-service games!

Dang. Monolith was a solid studio that's been around for decades, and Player First made a good Smash clone that was mucked up C-Suite suits trying to "monetize" it. Hate to see good teams killed off over bad calls made at a higher pay grade.
