New World Doesn't Allow "Bezos" Or "Amazon" Character Names, It Seems

It seems Amazon is not allowing users to create player names that reference Amazon and its founder.

Amazon's new MMO New World launched this week, and the game is off to a very good start. Players have now discovered that there are some character names that are not allowed--and they aren't just the regular offensive and obscene names that you might expect to be blocked.

It appears that New World players are forbidden from putting "Bezos" or "Amazon" in their character names. PC Gamer attempted to create a character named "Jeff Bezos' Wallet" and "Unionize Amazon," but they were blocked. The site reports that any mention of "Bezos" and "Amazon" in a player name is not allowed, and this includes variations like "JeffB" and "Bez0s," among others.

Now Playing: New World - Official Launch Trailer

It's not that these names were already taken, either, as the game tells you "this name is in use" when you try to create a character with a name already chosen by someone else.

Some creative players are getting around these limitations, however, as PC Gamer discovered that someone created a character called "Beff Jezos." Someone else made a character named "JeffrieBezos," and the character model is even seemingly based on the business executive.

New World launched on September 28 and it quickly reached more than 700,000 concurrent players on Steam to become one of the most popular games on the platform. A lot of people are streaming the game on Twitch, too.

The game's massive popularity is causing some server issues, though MMO fans may recall that Blizzard's genre-defining MMO World of Warcraft also suffered from extreme issues at launch, too.

In other news, the developers have commented on the possibility of New World coming to console.

So stupid. People only are trying because they want to be the "one" that gets away with it. Just use your regular tag you've been using forever. I wouldn't play with a Bezos or Bozos. Either way, just dumb.

Game sucks btw. Seriously. It's another MMO with the SAME MMO bs we've been experiencing for years. Just a different story and different name. This one though is severely crafting dependent which means if you need something players will be charging through the waa-hoo for it.

Where's the article where they talk about the microtransactions? Nothing like being able to 'buy' rested xp and travel speed...

@mogan: Pretty sure no other platforms prevent people from creating usernames from their staff.

It's off to a "good start" despite widely derided server instability and days long queue times resulting in poor user reviews?

Whatever you say, Gamespot.

@Thanatos2k:

Can't speak to other regions, but you can easily avoid high populations servers in the US.

From what I have heard they're opening more servers in stressed regions and planning to offer free character transfers so friends and guilds can re-consolidate. It isn't optimal but in 20 years of playing MMOs this is a "smooth" launch. Game has been out for 72hrs and I have 40hours played and 1 gueue for 5 minutes, that is good in MMO land.

If you clog onto high pop servers, you get dumdum queues. After a couple weeks the impatient and people who just don't like what is on offer will fall off and queues will drop.

@Thanatos2k: I'm about 10 hours in play time and the most I've waited in queue was about 15 minutes at which point I played a game of magic arena, and I was in game in new world.

"Mixed" reviews on Steam, despite a beta that should have helped them build good will before launch. And queues like this sound like something less than a success from a company that shouldn't have any hosting issues at all, given that they already host Netflix and a number of the other largest services in the world.

Also, 700,000 concurrent users, not players. From what the reviews on Steam are indicating, people can launch the app, but then they're sitting in queues for hours without ever playing the game. You can only get a refund if you "played" the game for less than two hours, and several reviews mention that they had to call it quits and seek a refund without ever actually playing the game because they "played" for 2 hours by sitting in a queue.

1.9 hours on record: "I'm genuinely convinced the queue times are a way to stretch my playtime to 2 hrs so that I can't refund it later."

0.9 hours on record: "I got 31 minutes on the clock and not once been able to play the game! Since i didn´t want to burn my 2 hours playing time i a queue, i refunded the game."
