New World's Massive Launch Is Causing Server Issues And Long Login Queues

Amazon is looking to address server issues as New World soars past half a million concurrent players.

New World, Amazon Game Studios' long delayed MMO, is finally live, and it has quickly become the #2 game on Steam with more than 700,000 concurrent players and counting. Unfortunately, that also means server issues and long login queues for many players looking to dive in.

Most of the game's North American and European servers are currently at "High" population counts, with a few still at "Medium" population. Amazon says it is looking into the problems and wants to get everyone into the game. Some on Reddit have said they're even getting kicked out of the queues themselves, send back to the very end of the line and forced to wait several more hours.

Another update on September 28 also mentioned that more servers will come online in order to expand the capacity for the game, and that the "sole focus" for the team is to make sure players can log in quickly.

The game is also seeing massive popularity on Twitch, which is owned by Amazon. As of late Tuesday, there were more than 900,000 people watching New World on the platform, and those watching certain channels and who link their Steam accounts can earn Twitch drops for in-game items.

New World's launch comes after multiple delays and beta periods. The game was originally set to release in spring of 2020, before being delayed three more times. A closed beta period for the game earlier this year saw more than 200,000 concurrent players.

Amazon has a lot riding on New World. The company's previous game, the free-to-play hero shooter/battle royale Crucible, failed to find any kind of audience, and was canceled a few months after release. A planned Lord of the Rings MMO from the studio was also canceled.

Amazon Game Studios vice president Christoph Hartmann recently said New World would be the game that proved what the studio was capable of, and if the game's launch is any indication, it seems like Amazon's investment in the game space may soon start paying off.

By the time I got off work and into the game, I got a message that they open up 28 more server in the US East, plenty of server with no to little ques. So I jumped right in .... spent 2 hrs in customization lol.

But it does beg the question, if they had the ability to open up a shit load of servers..... why would they not do that right off instead of hours long ques and 1000 in ques. Not everyone is trying to get into the exact same server. Not a good start in my opinion.

@jenovaschilld: You don't want to necessarily open new servers unless your going to consistently be having those queues 2 weeks after launch. At launch, the queues are always heavily inflated because you have people taking time off work, playing 24/7 and generally playing longer hours than they would normally.

However, after a couple weeks, those numbers start to stabilise as people get back to their regular schedules and those massive queues start to drop and the simultaneous logins drop and start to normalise.

The trick is that the number of servers you have, you want just enough to make sure that after the numbers normalise, you still have a sufficient number of simultaneous logins on each server so that you actually have people on your server to play with and that it doesn't feel abandoned.

However, by opening more servers to meet the inflated launch time rush, you run into a potential problem where once the logins normalise, the simultaneous logins might be far too low to sufficiently support the playerbase on each of those servers because you spread everyone out across too many servers in order to satisfy those inflated launch queues.

SWTOR ran into this problem when it launched, they had multi hour queues and in order to lessen the queue times, they opened a bunch of new servers. However, a few weeks later, most of those servers were essentially abandoned and most people either quit or had to start a new character on another more populated within a month of initial launch.

Now it is possible to somewhat combat the issue with say a server transfer system, which SWTOR did not have at launch and took them several months to implement, by which time most people had just given up waiting and quit. But telling people they have to pay for server transfer because you made too many new servers at launch is not going to go over well. Likewise, a game advertising that they are merging servers shortly after launch would have just as many negative connotations attached to it.

@fitzy_2812: My first 4 hrs was pretty smooth all in all. STarted in a no que server and was decent, then some friends wanted to goto a heavy server because of old guildmates. Still though the 1400 que melted away pretty fast, 75mins or so.

I noticed that you can only make one name ' unique' across the game and all servers to facilitate server crunching later on which is smart.

Latency was smooth and tight. I did not encounter any bugs. I have seen worse launches.

Meh...never judge by launch day...but still, the game just doesn't seem to have anything special about it at all. Pretty barebones really, with not much in the way of deep lore or stories or anything immersive or that would keep you interested....just seems like another ho-hum MMO derpfest. And I say MMO without the "RPG" part, because what's the "role" anyone is playing when all classes are pretty much just designed to be able to solo and do whatever they want and there's no absolute need for people to actually play different roles during group content? Sure, the "holy trinity" thing has gotten a little old, but at least it means people have a role to play and a job to do. The whole "everyone is basically DPS" thing is lame.

Will be interested to see what reviewers say in the coming days.

@esqueejy: I think they were going less WoW and Everquest and more Valhiem, Rust, Anno where survival and PVP combat is more focused then outright PVE dungeons, raids, etc. John Liberto and Double Helix said they did not want to recreate another WoW, but make a heavily exploration, craft, and battle game with factions. Reminds me of Age of Conaan.

Ah, either way it will entertain or sink itself. So many want to be the next WoW or FF14- the space is already over crowded, so you either clone WoW or you try something a bit different.

For the very cheap price of $40, and no subscription- worth giving it a chance, I mean what we gonna do play WoW shadowlands for another year...... argh.

@bubbahax: I can look at Guild Wars 2 to see how a PvP focused MMO played out - pretty well.

@bubbahax: Well some pvp have worked out, like Lineage 2, and PUBG like games. There is a heavy emphasis on action combat then menu based.

I will admit, I lose interest in PVP pretty fast, as I SLAY DRAGONS, and enjoy the PVE parts of MMOs more. This game... just too early to tell. A minecraft/wow/fortnite marriage maybe?

@jenovaschilld: We shall see I suppose, but watching more videos and what not just keeps reinforcing for me that it's very same-y in terms of how it feels even for different weapons and builds, lacks any sort of soul and that it's ultimately just a mediocre, iterative (as oppose to innovative), cash grab mess.

@esqueejy: Story so far is lacking not in content but impact, really is nice seeing so many people all jumping to get into the action again -high energy, very intricate but easy to jump into crafting system (really wants you to know there is minecraft in there) but certain materials are gated behind time walls to prevent over crafting and supply glut. I wish looting was different, or add in an auto loot, as targeting is no longer selected via L mouse button, instead you lay the crosshairs on it.

Combat-- pretty good. So unlike all of the mmorpgs out right now, this game is trying to be a little more action orientated, as left and right mouse buttons are combat orientated rather then point and click. Less 1-0 attacks and more like a PUBG or action rpg. Can also be played with a controller, and feels pretty good. Need to map some things though. You do find yourself in the first hour trying not to play WoW.

As for the soul... well it has plenty of that, they are really going for South American and island vibes. Architectures, vegetation, animals, structures, and color schemes are intricate and compelling. Sounds and music is vastly different then fantasy or African jungle, not bad so far. It does have a bit of pirates, voohdo and Conquistadors (cannot believe I spelled it right the first time) dressing throughout. The game does have soul, and in the store is just a few cheap cosmetic items - so not really a cash grab.

So the game right now has like around 12 weapons and two paths - that is some decent customization... I have only been focusing on sword and board and lifestaff not much to say on that. I will admit the UI has so many options, that if you look long enough you will find it. More fleshed out then any other game I have seen launch so far.

This game is not a cash grab, $40, no pay walls, sparse items to purchase. No whale food so far. End game.... who knows. But I have played a dozen MMOs since EQ PC in 2000 - and the launch was better then average. Since there is no subscription fee, anyone can more then get their money's worth out of the initial buy. I would say give it a try, they added 28 servers yesterday evening just to US east and it brought ques down in heavily populated areas, and there was plenty of server with no ques.

IT looks like Double Helix is trying hard, see this story. https://youtu.be/HMaCAiekMTs

New World: The Long Journey to Launch | X-Play

Maybe there is enough pressure, to at least, push for better then average.

Unexpected, considering how bad the beta was. What do people see in this? It's your average online uninspired cash grab.

@Berserk8989: Everybody wants to play the next new mmo and I'm sure most didn't play beta but it'll die down when they realize how unfun the game is and go back to whatever they were playing. Seems hard to make a great mmo nowadays that's better than what we have already.

I bought the game pretty cheap a few months ago on my Amazon Prime account, and downloaded it a couple days ago. I planned to play it some last night, but sadly it comes out during the day not at midnight.

So I am gonna have to wait till later tonight after work .... when I am sure things will be just fine>
