New Xbox Console Update Essentially Removes External Storage Drive Limits

It's good news for anyone looking to back up their entire collection of Xbox games.

In a welcome update for Xbox owners, Microsoft has announced that its consoles will soon support external USB drives that are larger than 16TB in size. This feature is now available for members of the Xbox Insiders program to test--specifically, members who have unlocked the Alpha Skip-Ahead tier--and is expected to roll out to the general public in the weeks to come.

"We are enabling support for external USB drives larger than 16TB, so you can be sure your favorite games are always ready to play," Microsoft explained in a blog post. "Newly formatted drives that are larger than 16TB will be formatted with multiple partitions to utilize all available space for games and apps. These will appear as multiple devices in the storage devices list."

Anyone who already has an external hard drive larger than 16TB that has been formatted will be unaffected by this change, Microsoft added, noting that these storage devices will need to be reformatted to take advantage of the updated support. It's worth noting that games optimized for Xbox Series X|S consoles cannot be played from an external USB drive, but these can be used to store the game data and then moved onto the console's SSD or an NvME SSD expansion card.

A new external drive-limit wasn't mentioned in the blog post, so if you feel like going all out, it does seem like you can make use of something like a Seagate 24TB external hard drive to keep backups of all your games.

With game install sizes steadily increasing over the years, this is welcome news to anyone looking to keep a massive library of games that can be accessed at any time. While 16TB is more than enough for a lot of indie and last-gen games--newer games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Stalker 2: Shadow of Chornobyl can take up a lot of space.

In other Xbox news, the first Developer Direct livestream of 2025 kicks off on January 23. South of Midnight and Doom: The Dark Ages are some of the games that will be featured, and Xbox is also teasing a mystery game for the show. Game Pass subscribers can also check out all the new games coming to and leaving the service this month.

Except you need SSD speeds these days and with physical media dying, who can afford 16TB or 24TBs in 2025? Maybe 2030 they'll be more affordable, but then what are things looking like then?

I returned Indiana Jones and Great Circle because I paid $70 for 2/3 of a game on a disc..... The rest I had to download. WHATS THE POINT!?? Rumors are circling that the PS5 will hopefully be a multi-disc game to contain the whole game or the UHD disc will be able to hold the entirety on a single disc. If that's the case, I'm back in, but I'll pass it up entirely if it's not. My mind was made up years ago and should PS6 be digital only and physical media is dead, that's it for me, PS5 will be the retiring console of thirty-five years of gaming, and I guess at that point, post retirement is catching up on my backlog and having a lot of money saved from them on

@neoXmahi: I can't remember the last time I purchased a physical copy of a game and didn't have to download a huge amount of content day one. I mean, is this kind of thing new to you?

@neoXmahi: That sounds like an odd reason to return a game. What would be the practical benefit of having all the Indiana Jones game data on the disc? Xbox and PlayStation consoles have been requiring all game data to be installed to a drive for more than a decade now

but why can't they just optimize the console to play games off the USB external harddrive, whether it be and Xbox one or Xbox series X/S game, would seriously make so many people's lives much easier

@cruxis1712: Because devs and games need to be able to make use of the SSD speed. It's not just shorter loading screens, it's things like being able to stream in assets faster, so that you can drive or fly through a huge environment without tons of pop-in. A lot of PC games are now requiring or at least recommending SSDs too. This trend won't be reversed, just have to hope for SSDs to become cheaper

They should drop the price on the storage cards, the prices don't make sense

@girlusocrazy: No, they need to get rid of the proprietary storage cards altogether like Sony did. I refused to buy another Xbox console if I can't add on a 8 terabit NVMe SSD like I can with a PlayStation 5.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at 20 bucks a month might also be a killer for me as well. I just stopped renewing my XGPU for the first time it almost 20 years because it's become too expensive at $240 a year. I've managed to get PlayStation Plus Premium to end the day before Thanksgiving so I can take advantage of the Black Friday deal at $120 a year every Thanksgiving day.

This means I can get a year of PlayStation Plus Premium for half the cost of XGPU, plus I can add in an NVMe SSD hard drive of my choosing whenever I want.

It can also be debated that while Xbox's controller is more comfortable, the PlayStation 5 controller is leaps and bounds ahead of Xbox's technology.

Xbox needs to produce something incredibly impressive for me to go back I think, for now I'm done.

@AntiMatter24: I love how you compare GamePass Ultimate (which comes with PC games) to PS Plus Premium (console only), so OF COURSE it's more expensive!

While I agree that internal storage on PS5 is easier to upgrade (mine has a 4tb ssd), it's much worse for USB storage - my XSX has 16tb external for XO & 360 games I have installed, because it's backwards compatible!!!

I personally HATE the PS5 controllers, I've had 3 official ones for because the batteries went bad and they wouldn't charge, but Sony does nothing to help you apart from say "but another one", so I've had to throw away around $200 worth of useless controllers - give me replaceable batteries any day of the week!!!

I'd love if Sony & Microsoft got together so there were less exclusivss just on the PS5 and GamePass was on the PS, but Sony have a stick up their butt!!!

Sony should learn about updates from MS MS should learn about controller tech from Sony, and Sony should learn more about batteries going bad and stop being greedy on exclusivss
