New Xbox One Update Boosts Console GPU Power

The latest Xbox One software development kit will allow for more GPU bandwidth on the console, with Microsoft promising more performance and flexibility from the machine.

Microsoft is looking to close the performance gap between the Xbox One and Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, and is now giving developers access to more GPU bandwidth with the console's latest software development kit.

"June #XboxOne software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth. More performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better," said Xbox Xboss Phil Spencer on Twitter. Microsoft had previously made rumblings that it was looking to make this the case as soon as possible.

It is widely believed that Microsoft reserved a chunk of the Xbox One's hardware potential for the Kinect, which was one of the many reasons that PlayStation 4 routinely trumped the machine with whizzier 1080p resolutions and zippier framerates. It is (or now, technically, was) widely believed, thanks to a fascinating Digital Foundry report, that Microsoft reserved 10 percent of its total graphics resources for the Kinect and apps. By giving more hardware oomph to developers, will we finally see the Xbox One catch up?

Microsoft has now removed the Kinect from the default Xbox One bundle, and will start selling the console for $399 starting June 9. Microsoft will begin selling standalone Kinect units for Xbox One later this year. Xbox One owners can also begin downloading the June software update for the console from today, which brings with it real name support on Xbox Live and the option to use external storage.

This is just overclocking witch will shorten the life span of the GPU.There biggest problem was putting DDR3 ram instead of DDR5 on board. Now using the GPU to make up for it.

No it isn't - it is removing a throttle they had on there which reserved a portion of the GPU for the system functions which included some Kinect functions. They have either optimized the performance to remove this reserved processing, moved those functions to the CPU, or found they didn't need that much reserved after real world deployment of the system. If anything, the GPU was underclocked which isn't technically correct as it was performing other functions instead of graphics calculations. It is just reallocating the reserved GPU processing from system to graphics, which is what should have been done in the beginning anyway.

And FYI - there is no such thing as "DDR5" at this point, the PS4 uses "GDDR5" which is memory used in dedicated video cards which is great for repetitive calculations like those used in graphics. DDR3 is typically better for all around uses.

<< LINK REMOVED >>How many times we have to say this ,it is not overclocking , it gave the developers the ability to code without calling the SDK parts to use KINECT when it was a "must connected" thus freeing more resources for the system now, not every game require KINECT and it was a must to plug it in to use the system , now no so the GPU processing reserved for it is free now which is 10% of the whole processing power of the GPU itself

The Kinect was never a must connect on launch systems... It only had to be connected for the initial setup.

@rolla020980 @Viper-Eyes @Goldem it was , if the system didn't detect KINECT plugged in during the online check the system was going to refuse to function.they didn't release the system in this state but they didn't change the OS ability to do that.

@rolla020980 @Viper-Eyes I didn't say the system did had this on launch system , the system was designed to work like this before the release remember they changed the policy when people got mad at them ? on the announcement they said the KINECT had to be plugged in to function and periodically check for online connection.

Yes, but I do not care about something that never released. People spoke and Microsoft listened. Now for some reason people hate them for it. I will never understand.

@Viper-Eyes @Goldem They actually did not specify any of this in the article... it appears as if they are assuming that's what they are doing considering they are removing the connect, and in my opinion, they probably could over clock it as well the fan appears big enough to handle the extra heat it would produce, but the bottle neck with the whole system is the DDR3 ram

I'm sure this will make a difference critically speaking, but not sure what difference it'll make from a sales perspective. I just don't get the impression the public generally pay that much attention to these facts.

I'm curious how this affects kinect, if it's losing that dedicated 10% does that mean it reacts 'slower' while the 10% turns itself back on?

Or is this 10% just unlocked for devs who don't have any requirement for Kinect?

Removing Kinect has no effect whatsoever on the performance. Many so called "journalists" are incorrectly stating this which Major Nelson has already addressed. Doubtful that any Kinect functionality will be affected in any way, shape, or form. What has probably happened is one of 3 things:

1 - System has been optimized so the reserved GPU processing is reduced or no longer needed.

2 - They found after real world use they didn't need as much GPU processing reserved.

3 - They offloaded these functions from the GPU to the CPU, which is running faster than the PS4 anyway so should not affect game performance.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Logically no , playing a game won't require you to disconnect your KINECT to have better performance or worse if it is connected, what people didn't get is the KINECT is no longer required to develop the game , the developers used to code the game knowing that they need to call some parts of the SDK used to develop a game and calling these parts use resources which is not the case now, this is no longer required which will result in better /easier coding for the developers and more free resources to use.

Connecting /Disconnecting the KINECT is not affecting the performance of the XBOX one , they just had it "a must attached " to the console for sales and marketing point but technically it wasn't a must and at that time the OS was set to refuse to work if doesn't sense the KINECT plugged-in ,then they updated the OS to work without it attached , and now the developer also doesn't have to consider KINECT in their development as they used to.

@Adam802 Agree, and Xbox One is going to a great way, I think that Phil Spancer isn't giving everything to get that overrated 1080p and 60 FPS, he's just focusing in doing great games, fun games, that's what used to matter in N64 times and that's what matter today, you can't have a Ferrari without wheels as well as you can't have a powerful console without games. #GAMEON!

Months or years after a graphics card has been released for the PC, there will be driver updates that will make the card operate more efficiently. This is expected, and not unlike what will happen in the console industry. I would be surprised if Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo didn't find ways to streamline their software to make their consoles operate better.

Also, some of us are far less concerned about 1080p than others. It's not the holy grail of graphics.

<< LINK REMOVED >> This update wasn't about making the card itself more efficient. They were reserving 10% of the processing power for Kinect use only, and they disabled that requirement. To the end-user, it looks like a bump up in performance, but the cost comes out of reliability of Kinect functionality. It makes sense, though... there certainly doesn't need to be that requirement on the Kinect-less consoles, and someone smart figured out that having a strict requirement is kinda dumb to begin with.

That is not technically correct - the reserved GPU processing was for System functions which INCLUDED Kinect but not exclusively. If anything they have optimized the system so they don't need that any longer, are moving those processes to the CPU, or found they didn't need that much overhead to begin with after releasing the system into the wild. Or it may be any combination of those factors.

They planned this last year: "The current reservation provides strong isolation between the title and the system and simplifies game development - strong isolation means that the system workloads, which are variable, won't perturb the performance of the game rendering. In the future, we plan to open up more options to developers to access this GPU reservation time while maintaining full system functionality."

And they aren't deactivating Kinect, and the new kinectless units aren't more powerful, and you don't have to unplug Kinect to use it. They are allowing access to the GPU reservation time while MAINTAINING FULL SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY.

You can't polish a turd!

Ps4 gpu is a better gpu than Xbox one, upping xbox gpu to 100% will still be a weaker gpu than ps4, as it is a more powerful gpu. Also Sony has two Dev teams working on a performance boost for ps4. Witch will be the knock out punch and put xbox one away for good.

100% better would make the XBOX One way more powerful than the PS4. You, like many here, are confusing the CU count with actual performance.
