New Xbox One Update Boosts Console GPU Power

The latest Xbox One software development kit will allow for more GPU bandwidth on the console, with Microsoft promising more performance and flexibility from the machine.

Microsoft is looking to close the performance gap between the Xbox One and Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, and is now giving developers access to more GPU bandwidth with the console's latest software development kit.

"June #XboxOne software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth. More performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better," said Xbox Xboss Phil Spencer on Twitter. Microsoft had previously made rumblings that it was looking to make this the case as soon as possible.

It is widely believed that Microsoft reserved a chunk of the Xbox One's hardware potential for the Kinect, which was one of the many reasons that PlayStation 4 routinely trumped the machine with whizzier 1080p resolutions and zippier framerates. It is (or now, technically, was) widely believed, thanks to a fascinating Digital Foundry report, that Microsoft reserved 10 percent of its total graphics resources for the Kinect and apps. By giving more hardware oomph to developers, will we finally see the Xbox One catch up?

Microsoft has now removed the Kinect from the default Xbox One bundle, and will start selling the console for $399 starting June 9. Microsoft will begin selling standalone Kinect units for Xbox One later this year. Xbox One owners can also begin downloading the June software update for the console from today, which brings with it real name support on Xbox Live and the option to use external storage.

Didn't they overclock the GPU before launch ?, i wonder just how much power they are trying to squeeze outta it now :P. Im all for more powerful machines but they also need to be careful it doesnt shorten the lifespan of the machine (I dont want parts burning out after afew years).

Maybe give us more info on how its been boosted...is it reserved space or have you Overclocked it some more ?

@bunchanumbers It looks like both were boosted

(GPU was 800MHz to 853MHz, CPU was 1.6 to 1.75).

Good deal. Then with DX12 and cross platform support this will be a huge move.

This is good for all games which will be released 2015.

wished this could benefit also games like Destiny and Diablo 3.

@sladakrobot Diablo 3 isn't big on the graphics anyway. Doesn't look much better on my PC. than my friend's 360

<< LINK REMOVED >> We're just going to have to chalk this up to the system's growing pains. Games are never fully realized in the first year of a systems lifetime.

Well, we're seeing this upgrade before the DX12 really comes, this advantage that PS4 has with the hardware will be ameliorated with the software of Xbox One, with equal performance what will make you decide between the two is what? Games, exclusive games, and for now Xbox One has some better looking exclusives realesed and to realese.

Sounds like a win for MS. Hopefully the new games will have a better resolution. A great stop gap until DX12 and Cloud enhanced games happen.
