New Xbox One Update Boosts Console GPU Power

The latest Xbox One software development kit will allow for more GPU bandwidth on the console, with Microsoft promising more performance and flexibility from the machine.

Microsoft is looking to close the performance gap between the Xbox One and Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, and is now giving developers access to more GPU bandwidth with the console's latest software development kit.

"June #XboxOne software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth. More performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better," said Xbox Xboss Phil Spencer on Twitter. Microsoft had previously made rumblings that it was looking to make this the case as soon as possible.

It is widely believed that Microsoft reserved a chunk of the Xbox One's hardware potential for the Kinect, which was one of the many reasons that PlayStation 4 routinely trumped the machine with whizzier 1080p resolutions and zippier framerates. It is (or now, technically, was) widely believed, thanks to a fascinating Digital Foundry report, that Microsoft reserved 10 percent of its total graphics resources for the Kinect and apps. By giving more hardware oomph to developers, will we finally see the Xbox One catch up?

Microsoft has now removed the Kinect from the default Xbox One bundle, and will start selling the console for $399 starting June 9. Microsoft will begin selling standalone Kinect units for Xbox One later this year. Xbox One owners can also begin downloading the June software update for the console from today, which brings with it real name support on Xbox Live and the option to use external storage.

Unless they start replacing the DDR3 for DDR5, I don't see Microsoft matching the PS4's video output.

There is no such thing as DDR5 yet, the PS4 uses GDDR5 which while fast and good for REPETITIVE calculations (like those used in graphics).

<< LINK REMOVED >> Wow you guys clearly don't know what the differences between GDDR5 and DDR3.

GDDR5 is a higher bandwidth Ram with a much higher latency

DDR3 is a commonly used ram with lower bandwidth and lower latency.

They both even out in the end. With a slight edge to the GDDR5.

Yeah, no one realizes that GDDR5 is DDR3, just a different implementation.

I like the games in 900p... there is barely at all any difference. Ill take 900p with a good fps any day. I havent played any game on xbox one regardless of resolution and thought it looked bad. Im excited for what Microsoft has in store for the box. So far their exclusives for boxed and downloadable titles for the xbox one have been top notch.

Yeah... but when a game needs to be ran at 900p on the PS4, What's the hit goinna be on the XB1? Lower textures? Lower Draw distance? Developer is gonna need to lower something. Not that different then the problems that the PS3 had with games like Bayonetta.

It won't even be noticeable. The PS4 is as much more powerful than the X1 as the PS3 was over the 360 and it made no difference in the end. All that matters is that you have the console(s) you enjoy. Arguing about something you really cannot see in a fast paced game makes no difference. It is like the old Mustang v Camaro debate. You will always find something on the other side that you don't like and exploit it as a reason your is better.

While the cloud may not be able to increase the output of the consoles yet, the cloud works flawlessly with what it can do now. I don't mind criticism, but the whole "Claudzzz" thing is so immature..it's been going on for over a year now and it's never been amusing or funny. (This coming from a PC gamer).

Dear Sony Fans,

I am glad to hear that you are so defensive about xbox one improving its performance. While I expect you think your more important than you are, us loyal xbox fans are not trying to "Catch up" or "out gun" your precious psbore. This is just a system of fine tuning the hardware to give us the best experience possible. No one is calling out playstation for their stability patch claiming they wish they were as stable as the xbox, or my personal favorite, playstation doing a 180 lol, they said their system was stable, but then look at them changing their minds and putting stability patches in anyway.

So in conclusion, thanks for having such an interest in a system that "we" not you, decided to purchase and play. I wish I cared half as much for the ps4 as you seem to take interest in my system. You strong support goes a long way toward microsoft improving "my" experience. Who is trying to improve yours?

You skipped the part where your improved performance comes at the expense of the "integral" kinect which I just find hilarious

anyway this will put both consoles even closer on power so even less 1080p/60fps arguments

That is not true in the slightest. The reserved GPU processing was for SYSTEM functions, one of which was some Kinect processing. Microsoft is not sacrificing anything, they've optimized the system, reallocated it to the CPU, or found they didn't need it as much as they initially thought after real world deployment. Kinect functionality is remaining and will only be improved with further updates and time.

Unless that 10% from removing the Kinect (a move I'm pleased with) doesn't amount to anything. We'll just have to wait and see. It's interesting how much backpedaling Microsoft has done in the past year, not just on the console front but also the privacy front as well if their press releases can be believed. They were the first to jump onboard with PRISM after all, something that made the Kinect even less palatable than it already was. And then theres those rumors of a back door in Bitlocker. It's so hard to trust them right now.

Anyways I'm looking forward to the consoles that replace these ones since Microsoft will have (hopefully) learned many valuable lessons by then. If they have, my next console will probably be a Microsoft one. I love my Xbox 360 and I love my PS4. I love my PC too. I might even get an XB1 down the road depending on the quantity and quality of their exclusives. For now I am looking forward to PS Now most of all since I've never owned a PS3. So looking forward to playing The Last of Us Remastered later this month and hopefully many more missed PS3 exclusives in the near future too.

True on PRISM, but the Bitlocker backdoor does not exist. The articles that were published talked about the UK and the FBI pressuring Microsoft to add a backdoor so they could access data, but Microsoft refused.

The issue I have on PRISM is with the government, not with Microsoft. There was an incident last year where Microsoft refused to hand over information unless the feds could produce a warrant (at which point they have no choice). The feds could not get a warrant as the courts refused.

The PR issues were just too overwhelming for them to readily hand over data. Besides, XBOX Live, while not perfect, has a better track record of protecting data than PSN. The fact is that anything you do online will always be at risk. There is no unhackable security.

The share button on the controller, but tbh $100 extra for some that drains 10% of the consoles power just for voice commands just seems like a waste (ofc the price has droped now)

I've always liked the idea of kinect but until its powerful enough to recognise finger movements to input commands or adds a proper input device it's useless for any games I'd like to play

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well i guess its not going to drain 10% anymore. and its all personal preference. I have an xbox one in both media rooms so all my preferences and stuff follows me room to room. call it lazy, but its worth the 100 for the things it does for me.

example, I spent $100 on a universal remote, but when I cant seem to find that i can still navigate my tv until it turns up. no more couch turning sessions. I guess you could say its a 100 universal remote with value added features.

None of this matters unless the Xbox One can dish out games with the same resolution as PS4. The graphics do not have to be better, but the resolution needs to be the same. PS3 was more powerful than Xbox 360 and it was fine, but having better graphics and resolution is way to much of a difference.

Your absolutely right. The PS3 was more powerful than the 360 and it made no difference whatsoever. This debate is pointless. If you put screenshots side by side and zoom way in, you might be able to tell a difference, but if you are on your recliner 20 feet from the screen with action going on all over the place, you will not notice. Just play the console you like and leave everyone else to theirs.
