NewsSpots: Ubisoft on PS3, SOE Fan Faire, Namco Museum Wii, BioWare talent search

Yves Guillemot says Sony must slash console prices, SOE event to debut new title, old games revamped, and RPG developer looks for amateur designers.

Ubisoft CEO says PS3 price must come down
Following the lackluster sales of the PlayStation 3 in April, the CEO of one of the top third-party publishers has called for the console's price to come down. Speaking at a Reuters technology summit, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot expressed his belief that the gaming platform's price is putting off many would-be buyers. Reuters reported Guillemot as saying that Sony needs to lower the price "quite significantly" and predicting that Sony would certainly have a reduced share of the market in this generation of consoles. As for Ubisoft's PS3 support, Guillemot said the publisher was planning a game exclusive to the system, for release in Europe.

SOE to debut next game at Fan Faire
Diehard PC gamers torn between attending BlizzCon or QuakeCon during the first week of August this year now have a third -Con from which to choose. Or, more accurately, a Faire. Sony Online Entertainment today announced that it will hold its annual Fan Faire August 2-4 at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. To entice fans to the show, SOE has already said it will have its new online game make its worldwide debut at the event. The publisher hopes to draw more than 1,500 people to the event, with tournaments, costume contests, a silent auction, and glimpses of its upcoming lineup of games.

Namco Museum Remix-ed for Wii
Namco Bandai Games has had news of several unannounced games leak out through online retailers this year, the most recent of which has proven to be Namco Museum Remix for the Wii. Officially announced today (but spotted online back in March), Namco Museum Remix includes five games revamped to take advantage of the Wii Remote (Galaga, Pac 'n Roll, Rally-X, Pac-Motos, and Gator Panic), as well as nine games in their original arcade forms (Galaxian, Dig Dug, Mappy, Xevious, Super Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Pac-Mania, Gaplus, and Cutie Q). The game is currently slated for a fall release.

BioWare holding talent contest
Besides putting the final coat of paint on its forthcoming Xbox 360 action role-playing game Mass Effect, BioWare is also soliciting job applications in the form of a contest for amateur game designers. While the prizes don't actually include a job with the company, BioWare is running it with an eye toward finding new designers for its Austin studio. To enter, would-be designers need to create a module for the original Neverwinter Nights using the Aurora toolset that shows off creative level design, scripting abilities, ability to create cinematic moments, and more. Visit BioWare's contest page for the full rules.

I actually dont think the PS3 needs a price drop any time soon. Take a quick look at this chart: << LINK REMOVED >> In their launch window, not only did the PS3 perform better than 360, but it was just about where the PS2 was. So I really dont think the price is as big an issue as games are. Many games comin out for PS3 starting with late next month, so PS3 sales can be expected to really kick off once we get there.

You forgot about Fable 2, Too Human, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Wolfenstein, Eternal Sonata, Forza Motorsport 2, Banjo-Kazooie, Halo Wars, PGR 4, Splinter Cell 5, and Hour of Victory. Plus there are the X360/PC exclusives like Bioshock, Shadowrun, Overlord, Marvel Universe Online, Monster Madness and Alan Wake.

The ps3 simply lacks the exclusives that it once did to make the system sell like it did for the ps2 and ps1. When you can get a better experiance on a cheaper console that has twice as many exclusives it's easy to see why the ps3 isn't selling. So until Sony gets it's act together and starts pumping out good first party titles i think the system is going to tank. In that regard Microsoft and Nintendo have Sony beat. Microsoft has way better first party developers and Nintendo is king of First party titles.

Ubisoft doesn't only make crappy games for PS3; they also make crappy games for Wii (i.e. Red Steel) and for PC (i.e. Splinter Cell 4, GRAW).

When they manage to produce a game as good as their top 360 games, then they will earn the respect of PS3 owners.

Just because they started from sratch doesnt mean they know what they're doing. In fact, all Ubisoft has shown is that they suck at making a PS3 game thus far. Limited talent, lack of support, whatever the reason doesnt matter. They're not making games like GTHD, FFXIII, LittleBigPlanet, etc.

gmayronne all these multiplatform games for the ps3 run poorly for several reasons, first of all im pretty sure MOST of these games were designed around easier to use 360 development tools and then "duplicated" to run on the ps3 hardware which noone knows how to use as of right now.......... if that s the case how can u explain the fact that for the ps3 version of splinter cell double agent they started from scratch and is worse than the 360 version....

barom Because Xbox 360 came out a year earlier? I mean if you look at the future, there ain't much exclusives on X360's side, I can only think of Lost Odyssey (i think it's called) and Halo 3. and u can add a sequels of gaers of war and dead rising ... so 2 more ... and it s gonna be enough exclusives for 360... believe me .... it s obvious the developers care more about the 360 than the ps3 ... and ubisoft too.. with the new splinter cell anounced and no ps3 version anounced yet.. and all ubisoft games plays and looks better on 360 than on ps3 ... and not just the ubisoft games ... look at spiderman 3 , first a ps3 exclusive but runs smoother on the 360 .,.. if dmc4 would perform better on 360 , i think the console war is closed...

funny Ubi can't make good ports. you can only blame so much on sony hardware cuz last time i checked oblivion was also a port and ended up looking better. Bathesda seems to take their ports more seriously i guess.

What Sony needs to do is keep the price up until they have a solid game base with a good number of good titles. Then, maybe in 2008 they should lower the price.

@ Merodach: Ubisoft already had their Gamers Day press event. They're putting an embargo on the previews like every other game company (Sony, EA, Capcom, etc). Montreal journalists have already seen the new stuff but they can't say anything at all until the embargo is lifted, which should be next week. One Montreal journalist has already hinted they will announce the new Splinter Cell.

flex49 What are you talking about? The PC is NOT a console. So when a thrid party company says it's an xbox360 exclusive they mean only on console...DOH! You can't play a pc game while on your couch and you don't get achievements or xboxlive online multiplayer....so it is exclusive. Your argument is no argument, barom! If the PS3 and Wii don't have the game, it's an exclusive. You sure don't know the pleasure of a laptop. I love to play games from my bed.

flex49 Who says they can't play their PC on the couch, you!? I play mine on the couch with my Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse using my Sony Grand Wega 60" XBR2 1080p TV for a monitor. As far as achievements they are useless IMO, I rather have trophies like what PS home offers. Also PC online kills any other online available at this time. Get your facts straight before you mock someone else! Like I said Ubisoft needs to get their act together!

Ubisoft stop making 360 ports to the PS3 and make them separately. That's why all port look better on the 360 then PS3 (from every publisher that has had there game ported). They utilize the power of 360 but tap nothing of the PS3 potential. Then people might consider buying your games on the PS3. And as far as that exclusive PS3 game... I gotta see this, cause I think it will never happen from Ubisoft sins they went the same way as EA. Port, port, port to every system available

barom From my point of view, if they're coming on PC. It ain't an X360 exclusive. Not saying that you said something wrong but I want to clear it up cause at least I misunderstood it before i double checked. Alan Wake, BioShock and Splinter Cell is coming on PC (last one was pretty clear though). So yeah in the end you're left with Halo 3, Halo Wars and Lost Odyssey. * What are you talking about? The PC is NOT a console. So when a thrid party company says it's an xbox360 exclusive they mean only on console...DOH! Ubisoft can only start telling Sony what to do once they start putting some actual effort into the PS3 games they make. I used to like Ubi a lot, but they've become lazy and cash-hungry, I'm hoping Assassin's Creed will restore my faith in them.

The reason why Ubisoft wants SONY to lower their price is because Ubisoft has no faith in their products thats going to sell. So they try to look for more user install base systems like 360 cause they think just cause 1 console has more install base they think they could get more money out of it even if the game sucks like crap.

Sony needs to come up with some good exclusives and lower the price if they want to even compete with Nintendo or Microsoft. So far all they have is a high priced system with upcoming games that you can get on a cheaper system but play them the same. They have lost too many exclusives to multiplatform like GTA and DMC. Final Fantasy will eventually come onto the 360. At the moment there isn't much reason to get a higher priced system without any good exclusives and some good multiplatforms when you could get a cheaper one with many of highly anticipated exclusives (Mass Effect, Halo 3,etc.) and the same multiplatform games. As for now I will stick with my 360 by my side until some good enough games and price drop sway me to buy a PS3.

There's no way that the PS3 price would significantly drop this year. They'd have to be confident enough that software sales would help boost them back up. In their case....the software out for the PS3 is fairly mediocre as of right now.

There is no chance in hell Ubisoft was planning an exclusive title for PS3. They are a multiplatform developer. Since when did they ever make exclusives? Even Assassin's Creed when it was revealed was never going to be an exclusive. It was planned for 360 and PC all along, they just never revealed it just yet.

LORDDICE1 just keep your wishful thinking to yourself, because Right now the 360 and Wii have the larger market, and are cheaper (hmm connection). And if I remember correctly, both are outselling the PS3 month by month, so their in no danger of losing their lead to the PS3. Now on to your second point. These great titles coming out for the PS3 are going up against great titles coming out for the other systems, so they seem to be a wash to me. Seems like a price cut could be the only thing that can help them get "the ball started rolling"?

In response to jrett, look at 360 it's first year it had cod2 and deadrising, no better then resistance and motorstorm. Gears was the first real breakout hit and then the ball started rolling. PS3 has metal gear, heavenly sword, final fantasy, lair, killzone 2 and tons of others comming very soon. The install base is already bigger then 360 was at this point in its cycle when it came out and the ball is just starting to really get rolling. Read my response below your 2 by the way.

Some poeple are pointing out that because the ps3 is soo expensive to make that sony needs to keep the price where it is so they can make thier money back. That is just plain ignorant. The idea behind a price cut is to get their systems selling and increase thier installed base. Sure, they'll take a hit in the finances, but the idea is that it is a short term hit. If they don't do something to increase thier installed base, they will eventually take a much larger hit as the console fails. Remember, publishers like to put thier games on consoles where a lot of people own them. That is how they make money. The larger the installed base a console has, the more appealing that console is for the publisher to put their game on. The more games on a console, the more people are going to want the console. I predicted this the first moment that I heard the ps3 price. They are going to cut the price when the demand from the early adopters starts to fade. Well, the demand has most definately faded. It's time for that price drop. I see it definately happening before xmas 2007.
