Next Battlefield, Rumored To Be Set In WW2, May Only Have Cosmetic Microtransactions

Battlefront 2's microtransaction controversy shook the gaming industry.

After the huge uproar around Star Wars: Battlefront II's microtransaction system, EA is reconsidering its thoughts on the controversial business practice for the next Battlefield game. According to sources speaking to Kotaku, EA and DICE are planning to only offer cosmetic items in the game's loot boxes. The caveat here is that these plans could change before the game, which is rumored to be set in World War 2, is released later this year.

"No one's gonna do any pay-to-win stuff anymore," a source close to the new Battlefield game told Kotaku. "We didn't take any of the loot box controversy lightly."

This follows on from a report last week from USGamer that said EA was planning only to offer cosmetic items in the next Battlefield game's loot boxes. 2016's Battlefield 1 features loot boxes that you could buy with real money, but these only contain cosmetic items. What makes Battlefront II's loot boxes so controversial is that they contain items that actually affect gameplay like better grenades. Loot boxes are still in the game, but you can't buy them with real money, only through gameplay progression. The ability to pay for loot boxes is coming back, but EA hasn't said yet or what changes might be in place.

Kotaku spoke with people from video game companies big and small, and reports that the consensus among developers is to "tread carefully" as it relates to loot boxes.

In the wake of Battlefront II, lawmakers and regulatory bodies from around the world have questioned if loot boxes constitute gambling. And if they do, some states and countries might restrict the sale of games with loot boxes to minors. In the US, the ESRB recently announced that games with loot boxes will soon carry a label that says "In-Game Purchases."

So now they admitted loot boxes where pay to win. The longest argument was they were not pay to win.

No please, no more WW2 stuff! Battlefield 2143 please. Not too far in the future please, none of the wall running nonsense thank you. If I wanted that, I would play Titanfall.

Moving on from WW1 already? But then again other than the silly hats and era vehicles there was very little WW1 in the game.

I dont care about cosmetic microtransactions, if that's the only thing in the game then I will buy it, I just dont support pay to win loot boxes, I refuse to support any game that does that.

@hardcoregamer1: i also hope whatever is purchasable in-game are also unlockable. Another reason why OW does it well - you can buy the loot boxes for items, or just play a lot to get them without paying.

I'm guessing the people commenting here don't play battlefield. Battlefield has had "battlepacks" I think dating back to BF3 I think. They were certainly in BF4 and in BF1. They are nothing more than cosmetics and XP boosters. and you can earn them without spending money. It makes sense that they would be in the next battlefield game.

@spartanx169x: I remember getting battle packs (BPs) in BF3 & 4 that would give you weapon attachments, vehicle upgrades, cosmetics (knives, skins, etc), and some additional things. Usually, these were items you couldn't get from missions or progress alone and basically required amazing luck when getting BPs from leveling or putting down a couple of Washingtons. The changed that system with BF1 where it only has cosmetics now and now they are keeping it cosmetics only with BattleField WWII(?)

@gamer12: As far as BF4 now that you mention it I rmemeber. however it was not a problem because you could unlock everything by simply playing. Its definitely just cosmetics in BF1 excluding the puzzle pieces of melee items that are totally non-essential. If BF2018 is like BF1 its a non-issue.

@spartanx169x: Yep! Thankfully they are staying away from P2W concepts. I don't really care much if people put down $400 at a chance to get that one skin they want as long as that one skin doesn't let them call in a bombing run on my location lol

@gamer12: in bf4 if you keep using a gun you will unlock a crate with parts for the gun. You dont need to pay.

@johno357: Yeah it's always been like that, but the problem that people have always complained about was the fact someone else could get it faster and for less work than them. I don't really care either way as long as the new BPs don't affect the order of progression lol

@eganator2000: i agree, & rumors had been for a while that Bad Company 3 would be next. The other Bad Company games were much better than the numbered series for whatever reason (none in particular).

Though I find cosmetics pointless in FPS games, I'm still bothered when it's a part of microtransactions. We used to get these for free or as a reward for progressing within a game. Whether how microtransactions affect the gameplay ("pay-to-win") or cosmetic rewards, they just don't belong in a full priced game. Get rid of it completely.

@cboye18: i agree, & many would even pay more to get them out of a game they buy, but since the companies make millions of extra dollars from people buying this crap, they'd have to charge 3 times what they charge for a game now to make the same amount w/o microtransactions.

If it's a full priced game, they have no place in the game. Despicable.

@RicanV: that's how people frame every other argument, whether a genuine concern or not, so if that's how they want to play, game on.

@uzi9mm: Exactly? By the time this one comes out BF4 will be 5 years old.

But if it is WW2, I'll settle for an epic persistent Battlefield WW2 world in the scale of Planetside 2.

I'm sure these comments will be a level-headed and informed discussion about the place of microtransactions and lootboxes as they relate to demonetization of video games.

Just kidding it'll be the usual dumpster fire.
