Next Bill And Ted Movie May Never Happen, But Here's The Title And Plot

Be excellent to each other.

22 Comments

For as long as there have been two Bill & Ted movies, it seems like people have been talking about a potential third in the series. Even stars Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves--who also wants to keep making John Wick films--have been optimistic in recent years that the long-awaited sequel would actually happen. However, thus far nothing has actually been filmed.

Now, speaking with Digital Spy, writer Ed Solomon--who co-wrote the first two films with Chris Matheson--is shedding some light on the long-gestating project. "We have been working for almost 10 years to get this thing made; Alex Winter, Keanu Reeves, Chris Matheson, me," he says. "We have a director--Dean Parisot, who did Galaxy Quest--Steven Soderbergh is one of our producers. We have a wonderful assembly of people."

There's even a completed script that Solomon says the team is proud of, which was written on spec--meaning it was written unsolicited and nobody was paid for it. "We spent years working on it because we wanted to get it right, creatively," he explains.

The movie they want to make is called Bill & Ted Face the Music and finds the titular metalheads now middle-aged family men. In the story, they will go back in time to visit themselves and Rufus (George Carlin), their mentor from the future. According to Solomon, this will be done using footage from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Of course, given Carlin's death in 2008, it would be impossible to film new Rufus scenes without recasting. Instead, Solomon says the movie is "not just an homage to him, it's more than that. His absence is a part of the whole movie."

So what's keeping the movie from getting made? It simply can't find the necessary funding. "We are having issues raising money for it, getting it financed, because what we get all the time--all the time---is people wanting to reboot it," he explains. "It's 'Let's do Bill & Ted with new teenagers,' but what we wanna do is the story of Bill and Ted as middle-aged men, and tell what we think could be a really funny, and actually really moving, story about their lives and where they are now."

Still, Solomon and the rest of the Bill & Ted team aren't giving up yet. While there's still no telling if it'll happen one day, keep your fingers crossed in hopes that eventually Bill and Ted will indeed face the music.

Would love a "real" part 3, not a "reboot." Recasting would be a very poor idea.

They should start kickstar to fund the movie. But I through movie company fund the movie unless they don’t want this to be made. I hope see the light of day and so sad won’t see light of day.

Good for them, sticking to their guns rather than let Hollywood vomit out another reboot.

I've long since outgrown Bill & Ted, but I would definitely give the new one a watch. I think it's a wonderful idea.

it might turn out good if they ake it right, but it sounds like a gamble.

This and the fourth Austin Powers I hear about from time to time. I just think if it was going to happen it would've by now.

@Pyrosa: lol yeah you're probably right. And with Beyonce and Madonna being Mike Myers' friends, it's over.

We definitely don't need another reboot. Not so sure I want a sequel either though. Bogus Journey did close the story rather nicely.

The only way this works is for them to stick to their guns, and NOT recast with modern teenagers... Particularly no one currently-famous. Hollywood doesn't understand that their ling-standing "A-list and PG-13 or nothing" formula IS the problem, and customers are flocking to things that break this mold (double usage of "mold" intended).

Be excellent, Bill and Ted. Do YOUR thing.

Hell, Kickstart it if you have to.

Sorry, it just doesn't make sense. At this point, Bill and Ted should have saved the world and been mega stars. The credits for the second movie really shut the door on the franchise. It just doesn't make sense for them to not have their shit together by now. If they start this movie in a real world, present day setting then it defeats the story of the original film. If they start in the perfect future then where's the personal conflict for the story? It's a crap idea no matter how you come at it. Plus, does anyone want to see a middle age Bill and Ted? They're so 90s that it's almost painful to watch. You take that way and it's just two middle age guys complaining about their life. It just doesn't work.

@ClunkerSlim: Sounds to me that A) they've already written around that, and B) time travel allows that to be relatively easy.

I say, "why not?" There have been plenty of late-sequels that failed horribly, and plenty that turned out fine.

@Pyrosa:

I’ve been following this movie for a couple of years now and the idea was supposed be along the lines of it being 25 years later and the prophecy of Bill and Ted saving humanity hasn’t come true, something has gone wrong with the timeline so have to go back and change the past to make the prophesised future happen. Typical time travel stuff really.

I actually really want to see this film. The seemingly unnecessary Trainspotting 2 proved there is still good films to be made 20 years later provided you tell the right story.

guess Keanu Reeves does not want to make this movie as much as they are telling people he does because if he did he would just fund it with his own cash.

@dragoonmike:

In situations like this what filmmakers sometimes do is raise about 10% of the money themselves then approach other people to invest. Putting their own money in gives the other investors a bit more confidence to invest themselves.

@dragoonmike: You know NOTHING of Keanu Reeves. He doesn't keep most of his money. He gave most of the money he made on the matrix to the CGI teams because he felt they did all the work that made the movies good. He still lives in the same loft in New York he had before he became huge.

Just Google "facts about Keanu Reeves." Dude may be the nicest man in the world. And possibly an immortal. Like Vandal Savage, but pure good instead of pure evil.

@Dimebag_Darrell: Well said.

And clearly a good sport, too -- most Hollywood egos would scoff at returning to an old silly role.

@Pyrosa:

When he first started making it big in Hollywood he appeared in Alex Winter’s movie “Freaked” in an uncredited role as Ortiz the Dogboy to help Winter get the film made. He’s always been a good guy.
