Next-Gen Consoles Might Be Revealed Relatively Soon, GameStop Predicts

New consoles are coming.

New consoles from Microsoft and Sony might be coming soon. Retailer GameStop today said on an earnings call that it expects new hardware sales to slow down in 2019 on account of people hearing about new consoles and waiting for them to arrive.

"With respect to new hardware, as we get closer to the end of the current console cycle for Xbox and PlayStation, we expect demand to decline as some customers choose to wait on the sidelines in anticipation of acquiring the next generation of innovative consoles," CFO Rob Lloyd said.

Now Playing: Next-Gen Console Reveals Coming Soon, Predicts GameStop - GS News Update

Lloyd was specifically talking about business elements that GameStop shared with analysts to "help provide context" for 2019. This suggests that new consoles from Microsoft and Sony may be announced and/or released this year.

Microsoft is rumoured to announce one or multiple new consoles at E3 in June, while Sony is known to be working on a new PlayStation console. Sony is not coming to E3 this year but that doesn't mean the company won't have news to share at other venues at some point. Nintendo, meanwhile, could announce multiple new Switch models at E3 and release them not long after.

Llyod specifically mentioned Xbox and PlayStation in his comments, but not Nintendo.

There have been numerous rumours and reports about Microsoft's new consoles, a lot more than the new systems from PlayStation and Nintendo. You can check out GameSpot's rundown of all the big rumours about Xbox hardware here.

In other news about GameStop, the retailer announced a $673 million full-year loss. Despite the downturn, the retailer is optimistic about its future, thanks in part to new cost-saving and profit-improving efforts to be implemented by incoming CEO George Sherman.

To me the next gen MUST ensure all games must run at 60fps. No more 30 fps since it's obsolete. Unless that can be achieved, it's really not next gen but is simply like make up applied to granny's face. Having said that, I am always excited about next gen gaming !!!

I'm just not excited for a "next-gen" at the moment. We're getting like 1 great game a season, let's work on that instead of starting over.

The limits of hardware are hardly felt, anyways.

@gargungulunk: While part of the problem of a lack of great games is the industry's conservatism, in the sense that they don't dare enough, another part of the problem is the tech. Remember how last gen a lot of games were doing interesting things with physics? There's maybe one or two examples of that this entire gen. The crappy CPUs were a severe albatross on the current gen. I think finally putting out truly powerful next gen tech, and especially making sure the CPUs aren't trash this time, is as important as the industry actually trying some new and inventive things.

I expect these to basically be the PlayStation 4 Pro Pro, and the Xbox One X X... basically, just spec bumps to the completely backwards-compatible x86-based systems.

There's no theoretical reason that a PS5 game couldn't run on a PS4, just with minor graphic differences. We're getting close to the point of diminishing returns. (The difference between the PS5 and PS4 will not be as drastic as between the PS4 and PS3).

Similarly, Nintendo's Switch Pro/X would contain the next-gen Nvidia Tegra SoC and be completely backwards-compatible with Switch games.

@Elranzer: Id say the difference between PS3 and PS4 wasent that drastic at all. The PS3-era was when we hit uber-realistic graphics. The jump from PS2 to PS3 was the last jump that felt like a huge generation change.

@Pupchu: You need a better display if you don't think the jump in graphics was drastic. There's nothing on last gen that can compare to Driveclub, Infamous Second Son, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Destiny 2, Battlefront 2 and Battlefield V, the list goes on.

I do agree that the jump to next gen won't be drastic in pure graphics terms but there's room for a big improvement in gameplay with good CPUs.

@twogirlsonecub: It was not drastic at all. Both were 1080p, just a slight bump in graphics from PS3 to PS4. The only main difference between the two were speed. Thats about it.

The change from 480p to 1080p as well as the other things that were added to the PS3 was an extreme change for the better compared to the PS2.

@chubby170: Last gen wasn't 1080p. Most games targeted 720p and a lot went under it. The 360 did have a decent hardware upscaler but playing backwards compatible games you can definitely see the divide between last gen games and especially the hardware refresh supported games. In fact a lot of current gen games for the base hardware dips under 1080p. Also, resolution isn't even half the story.

All I care is that these come with some decent exclusives at launch so the XBox console will be ruled out for me. Please no more repeat of the disaster that is known as E3 2013.

@saikowaifu2003: Im playing The Last of Us on PC. I can also play the Uncharted games, and MANY other PS "exclusives". Its PS Now for PC. Google it. The days of the exclusive are ending.

@pongman1975: Don't assume that gamers by now do not know the option of PS Now, and there's little equivalence between this streaming service and the native PC support for XBox Anywhere titles. PS Now still streams games from a PlayStation console hardware, and in the case of Uncharted and TLOU as you've mentioned, it's a last gen system as well. Add internet latency to that the console versions will still be the definitive versions. Furthermore, I and many other gamers prefer having local copies of games on purchased hardware, and this is clearly evident in the almost unanimous negative reaction to Google's Stadia streaming service, so to argue that PS Now will render the PS exclusives argument moot in the same way as XBox's Play Anywhere approach does is akin to saying that Google Stadia will render gaming PCs redundant.

@saikowaifu2003: I dont like the Stadia Idea either, but its where gaming is going to. Physical copies of games will always be superior. BUT, companies are looking at subscription services as the way to offer their games. I like some of the Sony exclusives, but not all of them. Why would I buy a PS to play 1 or 2 games a year on when I have a PC instead? And the latency thing is getting much better. Tech companies are figuring out how to eliminate it, and 2 years from now, will be a non issue if you have proper rigs. So 60$ for a game, or a small monthly fee for a service will be the decision gamers have to decide on. You can say the games are on "last gen" systems, but really, theres not that much difference between PS3 and PS4. Same goes for the MS consoles.

@pongman1975:"...not that much difference between PS3 and PS4. Same goes for the MS consoles." if you're talking about features and core gameplay mechanics, then fair enough. Sure the increase in power is no longer that massive but I think this statement is still too much of a stretch. As for the rest, it's up to you to decide though unless Sony starts putting current gen games day one on the streaming services, I don't see it'll pose a threat still to the consoles still, but if it's working out for you right now then good for you, for me though the whole idea of playing a non-definitive version of a game that you have less control over on the vastly superior hardware just sounds a little silly. With streaming it isn't just the latency issue, but the whole idea of your own games will be eliminated with it, on top of the danger of your games library disappearing in event of something happening with the service provider - already in aviation you get ridiculous things like planes full of passengers having to be grounded in the middle of nowhere due to the company going insolvent during flight, and imagine the equivalent of that happening to gaming. Maybe I do like a few more exclusives than you did so the cost of the hardware is somewhat more justifiable for me, and really my GPU alone costs a little more than two PS4 Pro consoles, so I'm not too bothered about having to buy another hardware, after all most of us willingly make even more worthless purchases in our lives much more often, but that's just how I view things. If I do find myself in your kind of situation I'd either only buy the console towards the end of the console generation, or buy a second hand one to play a particular exclusive or two I'm interested in before trading it away. If Sony's taking XBox's approach towards 'exclusivity' next generation then I can assure you that I'll be gaming solely on my PC, as for Nintendo it'll depend solely on whether or not they are going to release a good new Donkey Kong Country game. Ultimately, I do think that so long as we can maintain a core base of tens of millions of core PC and console gamers, streaming will not kill off PCs and consoles entirely, casuals and those who cater to them come and go, but we'll be here to stay.

@saikowaifu2003: Well said. I can agree with that. The streaming games platform doesnt hold the nostalgia of owning great titles that are made. I honestly don't think many of todays gamers want their content stored on some cloud. I tend to enjoy looking at the physical copies I own, because it brings back good memories, and influences my decisions as to where I want my money to go. I just hope the game developers dont start throwing rushed cloud based trash at us to make a quick buck (Anthem, and others we know of). Now that I think about it, I don't really like the idea of EVERY game coming out on some subscription service. Thanks for changing my mind on this. You have put this into perspective as far as the future of gaming goes. Next gen, I think I would enjoy gaming better by having that PS5 or the other consoles available so I can say "Yep, played that amazing exclusive on that new console". It just sounds better that way.

@pongman1975: Cheers and like you, I don't have anything against the idea of streaming or subscriptions, just not have the entire gaming ecosystem built around it. I think it can be a good way of introducing core gaming to audiences who may not yet have a prerequisite hardware, or keeping the casuals acquainted with what's out there in gaming. For core gamers like ourselves though, I think we do not want to lose more power over the games we've already bought to a single monopolistic entity out there in the cloud.

@saikowaifu2003: so basically all you care about is sony. sounds like a fanboy. I thought we were past all that console wars crap and becoming more unified especially with google and apple now entering the market and allowing games to be streamed. Microsoft already beat them to it anyway. Guess some people still think its cool to scream console wars smh.

@owizeisme1: No all I'm saying is that since all XBox 'exclusives' are on PC as well now and I've just built myself a very high-spec'ed rig, there's absolutely no reason for me to get an XBox console in the future. If Sony and Nintendo start putting their games on the PC too then I'll also be playing them on my PC, in fact as I'm writing this comment I'm listing my entire non-exclusive PS4 library on a second hand trading platform. It's true that I may like PS4 exclusives alot but it doesn't mean that I'll refuse to give MS games a chance if they prove to be good. There's a whole gaming world out there other than Sony and Microsoft. PS: I'd love to see MS kicking the crap out of Google and Apple when comes to gaming, given what the latter two have come up thus far.

@imajinn: Yes this is another way to interpret what I've said, because right now without exclusives XBox consoles do not offer me any reason for me to get any one of their console products. It does not mean that I'll refuse to have anything to do with MS brand in general when comes to gaming, just not on the console front.
