Next-gen Final Fantasy tech demo shown

E3 2012: Square Enix's new Luminous Studio engine offers glimpse at what role-playing franchise could look like in future; tech aimed at consoles, PC, smartphones, and Web.

LOS ANGELES--What could a next-generation Final Fantasy game look like? Square Enix has answered that question through a new tech demo video titled Agni's Philosophy, which was published on the company's website last night and is embedded below.

Is this a look at the future of Final Fantasy?
Is this a look at the future of Final Fantasy?

The tech demo runs on Square Enix's new Luminous Studio game engine, which the company says is capable of depicting "high quality real time computer graphics at the same level as pre-rendered computer graphics." The Luminous Studio engine is currently in development at Square Enix and is planned to support game consoles, PCs, smartphones, and Web applications.

According to Square Enix, Agni's Philosophy is representative of the level of visual quality Square Enix is hoping to achieve with next-generation games. The demo is focused on a magic-wielding heroine name Agni and is set in a near-future world where ancient sorcery and advanced science coexist.

As far as this tech demo is concerned, they teased us with Final Fantasy 7 already. It's not the graphics or tech I care so much about as the story. As a gamer since the 80's, I take graphics for granted today.

"ooooowwww, it looks pretty!" WTF?

I don't even play Final Fantasy games anymore. To me, the PS one was the golden era. FF7-9, Tactics, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Front Mission. These were games I played. 90% of the games I played on PS one were SquareSOFT RPGs. But now, FF13?13-2? Rythm games? This tech demo? I Could care less. If FF 15 isn't a return to knights, mages, and chocobos and moogles, then I won't care about it either. No silly future-tech, quasi-political, over-stylized, or online-MMO-bandwagon crap. Get back to basics, what made me love FF back when it really WAS the FINAL fantasy. I understand a desire for innovation and forward progress, but today's squenix pales in comparison to the days of the

And bring back the games we really want. Like another Chrono(for PS3 and Xbox), Tactics(if not a full fledged game then on PSN or XBLA, but with that traditional formula) or why can't Parasite Eve get a PS3 game, not just a slept on PSP game. And hey Enix? How about some more Valkyrie Profile?

And what's up with Final Fantasy Vs 13 and Kingdom Hearts 3?!?!

@kenerhai Final Fantasy XIII-2 would have been a million times more successful if it was called Chrono (something), and the character names were changed. It fit the Chrono genre much closer then FF and it would have made more sense.

@Cypress131 Whoa, whoa, whoa! If they would have named that a Chrono game, Square would have officially murdered my childhood.

@Cypress131 I wasn't impressed with XIII, but I agree. It's kind of depressing to hear someone say it, especially to those of us Chrono fans who're still holding out for a sequel even after 12 years...

@Noxypetalum Almost everything about FFXIII-2 fits into it being a Chrono game. The plotline, the type of story, the character backstories, everything except for the battle system and lack of playable characters. Rename the heart of chaos into the heart of lavos and boom, you have a Chrono game. And to be honest, the plotline would have made way more sense if not for the fact that they had to tie in all the FFXIII lore and characters.

Where they even at E3? Yes, I know Tomb Raider, but that doesn't really count as Square Enix

Wait..wait..hold the damn phone! Did they honestly waste time on this worthless tech demo when they should be focusing on..oh i don't know...FF13 Versus, repairing the mess that is FF14, and tweaking or forgetting about FF13-3? Why do we as gamers really need another pointless tech demo. We get it..games are becoming more graphical, we are not dumb. Just don't show us a game that is never going to be released and instead show us footage of the ending product of Versus 13. I can't be the only one that feels this way...I mean the tech demo for FF7 on PS3 was neat but when FF13 came out it looked even better..just had no emotion in it what so ever...or too much emotion..depends on who you speak to haha.

@Atheno That's not how these larger game companies work. They have different devisions, each focused on specific games. Within those devisions, they have even further devisions between art, engines, design, QA, management, and marketing. This engine was most likely created by a devision completely separate then the people who work on the games that are currently released, and will be used as a pre-production step towards a new game.

A short tech demo is one thing. Being able to return Final Fantasy to it's former luster is quite another. Square Enix hopefully will have commenced work on Final Fantasy 15 for the 8th Generation. It will be 2017 or 2018 before Final fantasy shows up on 8th generation systems. Square Enix is known for their throw-a-way tech demo's Which seems to get their fans riled up. Thus ending in disappointment when the next FF game shows up. So in 2017 at the earliest will we see how this new game engine works out.

I'm hoping they don't use any of this as inspiration for the next Final Fantasy title. It needs to go back to a medieval-fantasy setting. Stop with the futuristic stuff (for a while), let the Final Fantasy VII CRAP die (that being mostly directed at gamers, obviously) and get back to some roots.

@LandauTST I have mixed feelings about your comment, but I would agree that seeing a more old-fashioned Final Fantasy game would be... refreshing. Just as FF9 was a refreshing U-turn from FF7/8. More then just the gameplay though, I'd like to see some more original art-style, instead of this hyper-realistic bender that most game companies have been going through. I'd prefer a great game with the cartoony art-style of FF9 then a 'meh' game with the graphics engine this tech demo uses.

It's a cute tech demo. But you have to remember that "real-time rendering" is not synonymous with actual gameplay. This technology would be great for creating backgrounds, character models, ect... But then it comes down to what is practical in an actual game environment. When you're actually moving the character around, you won't be seeing anything like what is shown. A true tech demo for real-time rendering would have a player controlling the character, so we could see how the engine runs when the player variable is thrown into the mix. When it comes to 100% scripted sequences like this, it doesn't matter if it's pre-rendered or not. Can the visual engine handle player interaction to the environment and respond in a realistic manner? If not, then it's just a higher resolution version of what we already have.

@sheego The Uncharted series, and The Last of Us are great examples of the using a visual engine to drive your game. The Uncharted series had such a boring, dull, and generic plot... but the ability to meld great cinematic visuals within actual gameplay is what made those games very successful. In truth, the demo this year of The Last of Us is a much better tech demo. It showcases gameplay and AI of a far superior level, to the point that blends actual gameplay and scripted events to an almost confusing degree. What was scripted, what wasn't? If the game is anything like the demo, then I see it being a great evolution of gameplay. Same goes with Watch Dogs.

You See?! You See?!

i told you that Next-Gen was going to be incredible! I told you we would get near-avatar graphics!

This is only the beginning!

We are going to have HUGE battles with thousands, Destructible Environments, Real world physics, water physics, real A-I that can search for you, etc etc. It'll be so good, that you'll forget this gen ever happened!

Ok, but wait for 2020 for a game like this (and for 2030 for a finished FF Versus ¬¬), the graphics in this tech demo are not from gameplay.

@Zignoff This is a tech demo for a game engine, it is specifically meant to showcase graphics. It's weird to expect gameplay from a demo that doesn't represent any specific actual game.

@ilikepandas They could try to do what they did in Kingdom Hearts, that gameplay is awesome, but they should create a detailed and complex abilities system, while in Kingdom Hearts there's nothing complex on the leveling up system. I think that's what they're trying to do with FF Versus, while Kingdom Hearts devs are working on it too.

That looked pretty impressive for real time, though I hate the use of "shaky cam". Instead of adding realism to a video, it just causes eye strain and the feeling that they are trying to prevent you from seeing the action because they are afraid that you will see how fake some of the action sequences are.
